I'm doing this piece for my Symphonic orchestra audition, and I've been having trouble with it. Thank you for posting this, because this video has been really helpful to me.
Beautiful! I always listen to you before I start my practice time. It always demystifies the process. and then sometimes , play along with you. Awesome!
Minuet 2 , in my opinion is the hardest song in Book 1. (or at least as hard as the Boccherini). Keep your bow straight on Minuet 2, and master those string crossings, and it will serve you well in hundreds of other pieces!
Glad I found this channel. My 4 year old daughter has been working on this piece and while I'm a music educator, I'm not a violinist and can't play it as well for great demonstration (what she should strive for). The slow versions are perfect for our practices. Thanks for doing this.
+Aaron J. Campbell Glad to be of help, Aaron. But, just the fact that you are a musician with trained ears, you can still be of great help for your daughter. Trust your ears, and guide her until her ears are trained. Sounds like you are a great practice partner for your daughter!
I am subscribed to your online lessons (They are excellent!) and I use your videos to help me with the songs my in-person teacher has me working on. She just assigned this one but I haven't unlocked that week yet so this is very helpful. My in-person teacher is going pretty fast for me, but the combination is excellent (You and her make a great team). Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Oh dang it. Kujon, if you need me to unlock your lessons early at any time, just let me know.....so sorry I didn't see this comment in time. (email me instead......info@reddesertviolin.com)
Hello ma'am! I am also on and off violin and SUZUKI method also helps me a lot. and as I keep returning to the early pieces now I have fuller information. this piece is Chorale "Du Friedeürst, Herr Jesu Christ" BWV 116 written in 1724. The opus was written for the 25th Sunday after Trinity November 26, 1724 concluding the liturgical year. i just wanted to add, as i found i researched for it although not very clear, people will find it easier to retrieve. it was a painstaking effort and yet there are ones i couldn't identify.
And I also i have the Suzuki book to play along to it to but it helps me with me getting into Mark Wayne for middle school thank u for posting this it means alot thank you again
So you are awesomely fun to play it the first time ever in my life is so good I have a great way of the day before I get a follow back on track with the best of the day
Hola! Podrías tocar de la segunda posición Judas Maccabeus en lento para entender cómo se toca?tocas y explicas genial!muchas gracias!Aprendo mucho con tus vídeos.☺️
Hola! I will put that on my (long) list of things to do. I like that idea! But in the meantime....try this idea: Try playing PERPETUAL MOTION in 2nd position. Start with 1st finger on C-natural on the A string.....no open strings. You will learn A LOT by doing that!
hello! pls reply ( even if your not him but you know), how long can it take to just play it the normal way like a good one but not super good? im having a hard time doing this and its already about 2 weeks but i still cant play the whole thing! what should/can i do?
Hi Martin! Your question is difficult to answer, because I don't know how long you have been playing VIOLIN. But if you had played violin with a good teacher for about 1 year, then Minuet 2 should take about 3 weeks. Keep in mind, this is the HARDEST minuet in the book....it is really challenging to play all the string crossings.....so be patient, and keep your bow straight, practice looking in a mirror, and you will get it!
I have a question about intonation. You Bs and F#s are not consistently in tune. Visually, I see that many times you place your index finger slightly higher than in the middle of the tape for F#, or exactly in the middle of the tape, and both of those sound good, albeit not the same. But for B, your finger is most often slightly below the tape, and it sounds a bit flat. Isn't the point of having the tape to help placing fingers precisely onto the in-tune note?
Hi Alfred, The point of tapes is to get you in the right general area. Tape is very imprecise, and is to just train students to get in a consistent zone. True intonation requires lots of scales, practicing, ear development, etc. If I am imprecise or inconsistent on my B's and F's, it might be a weakness on my part. Sometimes, if I play too much with my fiddle band, and don't work enough individually, my intonation suffers. But the TAPES are just a guide, and not a precise one.
Hey Potatoe Queen, For string crossings, you need to make sure a few things are "in place": 1) Make sure your bow is on a good sounding point. (mid-distance from bridge to fingerboard is good for starters) 2) Make sure you are pulling your bow PARALLEL to the bridge, not crooked. 3) Learn to bow from your ELBOW, not your shoulder. 4) Learn to use your shoulder joint to change from string to string. Try this: SILENTLY place the bow on your E string. Put the bow at MID-POINT. Don't play anything. Now silently rock the bow to the A string. Now rock to D, Then G. Notice how your shoulder joint does the work, but your elbow moves through space. Practice silent string crossings like this for awhile. Next, try this: Play the E string four times. STOP. Rock to A. Play the A string four times. STOP. Rock to D. Then try playing each string 3 times. Then 2 times. Finally, 1 time on each string. USE SMALL BOWS at first, and add a little STOP before you cross strings. You can get rid of that stop later. I highly encourage you to check out my online beginner violin lessons. Here's a link for info. No oblibation. Good luck! www.RedDesertViolin.com
Glad it helped your daughter! I like to tell my young students who crunch alot to play the violin as if they were petting a tiny adoreable little puppy. (or kitten). They love the imagery. Tell them if they pet it too hard it will run away from them. :-)
+Mira Elbeltagi Hi Mira, well, the EASIEST trick to avoid hitting extra strings is to make sure your SOUNDING POINT is closer to the bridge. (not too close, or you will get scratchy sound) But most people play too far from the bridge, where the strings are soft and squishy....and it makes us hit extra strings. After that, it just takes practice on scales or etudes (or Minuets!) with a SUPER HUMAN awareness of what "plane" your bow is on, and developing muscle memory and precision.
Hi Alina, finger tapes are very helpful for beginners who don't yet have the confidence (or ear training) that they need to play in tune. All in good time, the tapes come off!
Actually, those are the printed bowings, to help people learn the right bowings. But perhaps you prefer smoother bowings. It's all good! To each his own!
It's on my channel, called "Gossec Gavotte". That piece is a tough one! It's as hard as anything in Book 2! Good luck! Gossec Gavotte from Suzuki Book 1, slow, violin only
Practicing this today! You always save me 💕🎻

What violin do you currently have, it is absolutely stunning. Also, thank you for this this helped me a lot!
+Sansu Tun The violin is my "Flotz", it is a fake Klotz. :-) It's a sweet old fiddle from a yard sale, not worth much, but I do love the sound!

Thank you this help me alot
Glad it helped. By the way, "that shaky thing" is called vibrato....and it is ok to use it sparingly for Bach.
I have trouble relaxing my hand, and it makes my thumb hurt afterwards, especially when reaching for the 4th finger. Any tips? Thanks!
Try placing your thumb more under the fingerboard so your hand has more room, a tip from my teacher that really helped me!
It does help your hand reach those hard to reach places.
+Sansu Tun thank you!!
+Paden Frye no problem, had the same problem but my teacher fixed that right up!
Thank u so much

How to stop the bow from playing with the string next to it? I would really appreciate if you answered
+Mira Elbeltagi Hi Mira, well, the EASIEST trick to avoid hitting extra strings is to make sure your SOUNDING POINT is closer to the bridge. Who dislike? Nothing is wrong. I like it.
I tried remember it but Every time I try I have to look back at it
Keep trying! We all need a whole bunch of tries before we get it!
Ummmmmmmmmm yeah
My teacher would have my head on a pike if I put stickers on my instrument like that.. wow. What happened to ear training?
Hi Alina, finger tapes are very helpful for beginners who don't yet have the confidence (or ear training) that they need to play in tune. All in good time, the tapes come off!
My next homework.. dreadful.
LOL! It is a hard piece....but once you get the string crossings in the beginning.....it all falls into place! Good luck!
