Back when I was on the tools I switched to Chinese batteries. You can buy them 3-1 over genuine. I can have 6 batteries that in practice work as well as the original(maybe a touch less power overall) and lasted as long. But having 6 batteries instead of 2 meant I never ran out of power or batteries. Can also swap batteries less between tools.
In all these years I've never had a single battery failure within at least a few years of purchase(genuine OR chinese)

Out of 8 Vanon aftermarket batteries I have bought (6ah), 2 have died and one is working on it. All my factory Ryobi batteries that came with the tools are dead as disco. The interesting thing is that the oldest four Vanon were bought at the same time as the tools, approx 6 years ago. Three of those are still alive and kicking. Of the four I bought two years ago, one is dead and another is about to die. I don't pamper them either, hot cars, cold buildings, they either work or they die, and I use them in everything from my brushless sawzall, circ saw, nailer, etc. Are they rated accurately? The answer is no, but neither are Ryobi factory batteries, UNLESS a specific optimized measuring technique is used. It is like the 20v Max hypes for battery packs and tools. It is still an 18v battery, but after charging it will read 20v for a couple of seconds before dropping to the nominal 18v. The 6ah batteries are probably 4ah, would be my guess, with 2000-2500mah high current batteries used to make two sets of 18v in parallel, which doubles the current. The maximum ah rating you could possibly pack into the same size case is 7ah (using extremely rare and expensive 3500mah batteries). Since we aren't paying a couple hundred per battery, neither the aftermarket nor ryobi are using these, lol.

  • @TheCharleseye

From what I've seen, the fakes tend to lie about their Ah rating by about 1Ah. For instance I tested a set of (claimed) 5Ah Biswaye batteries and they're actually 4Ah. I've seen quite a few reports of the same in reviews of other brands as well.
Granted, for the price they're well worth it. Performance wise, they sit right between my P108s and my P197s - which makes them good 4Ah batteries. It's just important to know what you're buying. I would highly doubt that the 9Ah batteries floating around are more than 6-7Ah in reality.

Please don’t call these fake. A fake is something that does not work at all such as lithium cells filled with sand. After-market or off brand would be better descriptions.

@@TomCee53 That was insensitive of me. I really should have taken into account the way the batteries might feel about being judged so harshly. Thank you for setting me straight.

@@TheCharleseye I just think the term fake has become overused. These are perfectly good off-brand batteries. The only think at all wrong is that they are probably overestimating the mAH rating. The fact that they use cheaper components with less reliability just makes them less valuable, which the price reflects. It’s more a matter of “you get what you pay for”.

I have found that fake batteries are not so good on first few charges, but improve with more charges, its to do with the battery balancing or lack of. mine are used in brushless angle grinder but i use an older 8 battery charger that you leave switched on all the time and it trickle charge and tops up batteries . also a very important thing is temperature of batteries when charging. No good charging a cold battery i always allow them to get to room temp. before charging.. so in winter keep charger in a heated place mines in house I have had this kit since lithium were started by ryobi and have only had one battery go bad. thats got be 15 years or so not sure

      Ryobi 9Ah/162Wh P194 got 133Wh
      Vanon 6Ah / 108Wh got ONLY 58 Wh
      Ryobi 4Ah/74 Wh P108 got 55Wh
      Ryobi 3Ah/54 Wh P191 got 42Wh

As best I can tell, Battery chargers monitor voltages to determine charge time. More capacity would just mean longer charge times.
The only issue I’ve seen is trying to charge NiMh batteries in a charger designed for lithium.
