I’ve watched this film 4 times in Japan. Even I’m not familiar with jazz, many scenes touched my heart. I was so amazed at the powerful, beautiful music and the pure passion of these young guys. Don’t remember how many times I cried. I can recommend this movie from the bottom of my heart.
maybe try Round About Midnight (1999) if you want some more fun jazz in Japan. it's by no means a masterpiece but a sweet little slapstick jazz adventure reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop :) bit random ik but that film doesn't get enough love!!
I am studying jazz piano, and (apart from the fact that they needed someone to tell the main character that he couldn't achieve his goal) when the dude said that practicing is worthless without talent I said WOAH THERE a few times. If you are a person with no talent, but you practice every day for like 40 hours, you're going to be better than someone with a ton of talent who doesn't practice at all.
Yeah of course, the point was that someone with no talent practicing 40 hours a day would never be able to get to the top, but someone with talent could become "the best jazzman in the world" if he practices enough.
I have watched this film in cinema three times. Never failed to make me cry every time. The soundtrack is composed by Hiromi so it's god tier I'm especially enthralled by the protagonist's performances
One of the most incredible animated films I've ever seen. It's a love letter to jazz, and the semi-impressionist moments when Dai's performing are absolutely stunning. Sadly it only played in the USA for 2 days, but I'm anxiously awaiting the blu-ray. Highly recommend the vinyl soundtrack if you can get a hold of it.
Got my ticket yesterday!! My dad always had jazz playing so I grew up with it well ingrained in my life. I heard the manga was awesome too so I can't wait for this!!!
THIS WAS INCREDIBLE!!!!! Honestly, I'm not being melodramatic. As a lover of music, I can say I believe this is the most accurate JAZZ LIVE MUSIC portrayal in anime. This anime loves Jazz MORE than even Sakamichi no Apollon, it's full of epic passionate performances - it's Shounen as heck (full of Dreams, Victories, etc) but not too dramatic or focused on the drama of everyday life. This anime is all about MUSIC and Emotion
Have you ever seen Kids on the Slope? It’s a short show but such a love letter to jazz music it’s amazing! I need to check this movie out but I saw it was composed by Hiromi so I’m itching to watch it!
I love kids on the slope!! I'm currently REWATCHING it for like the fourth time(?!) after this film, and I have to say it is the masterpiece I remember... unfortunately the live performances in that show don't get enough time/ attention, which is my only complaint, and it's why I spoke so highly of this film!!! Kids on the Slope is a love letter to Jazz but mostly classical Jazz and its history. This film is a love letter to THE FUTURE OF JAZZ!! You should DEFINITELY see it soon, alone or with friends who would appreciate music, and make sure you have a good sound system to enjoy the awesome musical numbers ~ And since I'm comparing the two, KOTS is better animated, and has a much better story, while this film is incredible simply for the performances (even though they use CGI to make them accurate) and the soundtrack which fits with the story perfectly
I agree about how the music arrangements in BG feels more jazzy than SNA, i think SNA referenced on Bill Evans but imo it needs a little more kick to it. Imo Blue Giant heavily emphasized on the jazz music itself, while Kids on the Slope emphasized on the relationships formed between the characters through their love/interaction of jazz. Blue Giant kind of reminds me of Haikyuu, where the characters all focused on jazz (or volleyball in Haikyuu). I guess the mangaka of BG must have quite a knowledge or even experience playing jazz.
This movie released in India. During the screening which I went to, there were only four of us. But the music, the twist, and the emotions were enough yo keep us hooked. 💜💜
@@kilba7695 whiplash is incredible. even looks like some of the drumming animation at the end of blue giant are basically rotoscoped from the caravan drum solo in whiplash lol
Just watched this series in theatre and it's freaking amazing must watch and love the lessons and meaning that it's giving for anyone in life that wants to accomplish anything.
I saw this in a packed theater, and it was an electrifying anime film. The music and animation are both just so spectacular. I couldn't recommend it more
Blue Giant deserves an Oscar for Best Animated Feature... It sadly destroys Miyazaki's retirement "final film" The Boy and the Heron. It's better than Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse too, and better than Suzume... Why didn't this get a longer and wider release in America?! It is a masterpiece to be seen on the big screen if we get another chance to see a second release in America.
Just read the 80 chapter. I'm absolutely devastated and touched 😢❤ I never says that before, but my life might me split on two parts, one is before i read Blue Giant, and the next if after.
Hiromi’s music is amazing! Loved this movie. Obviously it differs a little bit from the manga but definitely still enjoyed it and loving the manga too! We really don’t get enough good stories in the music genre and I’m glad this one isn’t short or over yet.
This film was pretty enjoyable! Before I was a teenager I got a scholarship to the Monterey Jazz Camp and at the end of three weeks, I performed in the Monterey Jazz Festival in an ensemble with Tanya Darby (now chair of the Brass department at Berklee College of Music) under the tutelage of Paul Contos (an accomplished jazz saxophone player) et al and we were essentially openers for a stage later graced by Dizzy Gillespie. I played trumpet back then too, so as I sometimes joke: that was the apogee of my musical adventures and it's been all downhill since. Alas, the reality is: many never even catch up to jazz, let alone transcend it. Trent Reznor finally stopped irritating me so much when he helped score Soul, but I think there are far more impressive avant-garde musicians, well beyond jazz, or post-industrial. Blue Giant, doesn't really delve into that, but I think it does an OK treatment of the obsession many have with jazz.
Opening for Dizzy must have been amazing. Bebop has always been one of my most favorite eras of jazz. Just got to see Sun Ra for 3 nights, led by Marshall Allen, he's 99 years old now and one of the last remaining giants of that era.
@@boodesultan12 The Japanese version of the manga from the beginning to volume 7 has been made into a movie. Therefore, you can enjoy it even if you haven't read the manga version.
