- There's a major difference between a "floater" and a "coaster" in Big Brother, so let's clear the air and get to the bottom of it.
VIDEO EDIT: I want to make notice that Tyler ISN'T floating despite me saying so in the video. A better example for BB20 would be Scottie or JC.

Apparently she wasn't intelligent enough to put together a seven piece puzzle that a 4 yr old could do
Just remember. She would be under a lot of pressure since she's under a clock and fighting to come back. Stumbling, sweating, nervously shaking all falls into this competition she had to do. But I am glad Kaitlyn is gone. Namaste.

Arguably, the shift towards “floater” having a negative connotation began 5 seasons before Rachel uttered those famous words when, in (the good) All-Stars, floaters were explicitly targeted (and belittled) in order to buy Chilltown the time necessary to fully take control of the game. The original architect of the prototype version of floating was instrumental in tearing it down and, five seasons later, Rachel being Rachel solidified the demise of classic floating as a socially acceptable strategy. It also didn’t help that so many players both before and after fundamentally misunderstand the intricacies of the strategy and just how difficult it is to pull off; so many people watch season after season where players who aren’t skilled enough to be floaters get their games blown up by their own ineptitude (and conflate competition wins with good strategy).

Kathy was still robbed. In no universe should Kathy have gone home during that week, it's just literally all the circumstances compounded against her leading to her eviction.

The thing about Rachel's famous line that everyone should've taken away was that Kristin corrected Rachel by saying, "Yeah, cause I'm such a floater." signifying that she knew what the term meant and knew that she wasn't floating.

Omg I appreciate this video so much it really irks me that because of Rachel Reilly, floaters have such a terrible reputation when floating is a perfectly valid and difficult to pull off successfully. If I was on BB, I'd likely be a floater

If I ever got to play Big Brother, I would try to get into an alliance but gain strong bonds with certain people on the other side of the house. I would try to play both sides but tbh it would probably blow up just like Ronnie 2.0.

Ragan from BB12 used to host an internet show with a teaching theme and he explicitly defined the qualities of a Floater and why Rachel had misinterpreted it. Similar to your assertions, one of the more dramatic uses of the term went on to define it negatively which is not at all the case. Good video!
Floater Strategy gets hated on by fans and players, but I think floater strategy is great if you perform smartly. Like, I think Andy played a fantastic game whereas he seems to be an unpopular winner. **shrug**
Andy is largely overlooked because production handled his edit so poorly. He is a top player for sure. Him, Jun, Alsion, and Will played the game that I would love to play if I went on the show.

Andy was initially cast as a flamboyant token gay for creating dramas and entertainment. The production didn't know what to do with him when he was actually plotting and scheming to win so they made him invisible on the edit for the first half of the season.

I like "free agent" instead of the classic floater definition. I like floater the way it is currently used instead of coaster.
but then that just not the right term for them. when you bc a bb contestant than you get to define the term
dawaby1 but several big brother contestants themselves have clearly used the term to mean what he calls a “coaster”, and then he says that they used it incorrectly. I think connotation is just as important as denotation, even more so actually, especially when the denotation doesn’t even formally exist past what perediam says. I agree with the first guy, the definition of floater should just remain as how it is used colloquially in the game. Free agent is a better term.
I actually like free agent, I was thinking it should be “treader” because instead of floating, they’re treading, they’re “floating” strategically. But free agent is much better.
Another great video Peridiam ... Paras in BBCan 6 played a brilliant floater game but likely only won because the girl she was sitting beside in final 2 called the jurors babies ... floaters have a difficult time getting jury votes unless they’re beside a complete goat or a Paul-type
And unless you're Jun, because I'd hardly call Alison a complete goat in BB4, since she also floated/flirted her way to the end, with quite a few POV wins as well

Thank you for posting this video, it really helps me to be able to distinguish between two very different prominent types of strategy
I'd actually like to throw something out there on where the origin of the split btwn floater classic and new floater actually occurred, and it was actually hinted upon towards the end of this video: look at how Jase referred to floaters, and doing some quick math you'll come to the conclusion he was referring to anyone that was neither S6 nor Chilltown. at that time it was already being used as a pejorative by the likes of obviously him, but also Janelle, Kaysar, and James as well on the show to refer to anyone they saw as an easy boot that neither they nor Chilltown would really miss because at that time S6 was scared shitless to actually put Will and Boogie up together. it's a crude, early definition of what would come to be known as the new floater which is really just a coaster but compared to Rachel's using it to describe only ppl she didn't like, and it becomes apparent that while Rachel was the popular cause of everyone hating what they called floaters she didn't change the definition, as that was done 5 seasons before she was even in casting.

I'm so glad that after requesting this video it popped up! I had a discussion with a co-worker last week about this very topic and I said that she has a bad feeling towards the word "floater" because of that Rachel speech. It drives me nuts. Same with everyone calling Andy a rat simply because he played a flawless floater game. Everyone plays to their skillset. There's no reason to hate the people who don't win tons of comps or stay loyal to a specific group. All that matters is that it works. Different isn't bad.

Great vid I have watched ever season of bb and I'm always on Jokers and other bb sites and I have never heard the term coaster
I think that if you could pull off the floating strategy it is the best strategy, but the problem is too many people get caught and proceed to go home. That’s why you see a lot of great players like Andy, Will, and Dan in the first half of BB10 choose the floating strategy and execute it well. Then again you also see people like Ronnie who get caught playing both sides.
Screw it, I'm subscribing, this is top notch content.

@@allycat0136 Exactly...a lot of fans don't get that it's smarter to lay low at the beginning, and then turn it on right at the end, because notice how the early boots are usually those who play too hard from the jump and make themselves easy targets

After seeing your review of BBCAN 6, I think it's interesting to not see Paras from that season mentioned. She bounced from power to power and perfected it while also performing the art of jury management each week. When she said she was gonna win, and she did, I felt it! Also Karen from BB5 is another example of classic floating while also being good with the majority of the cast.

I think the hatred for the floater term started with the Sovs in BB7. Just because the others didn't show off their alliances in an obnoxious manner, they called the others floaters who did nothing.

The Sovs definitely called the people who weren't officially with them or ChillTown floaters, but they meant it in the "going back and forth between alliances" way. When they called Erika or whoever a floater they were accusing her of being duplicitous and playing both sides, they weren't saying that she was sitting back and doing nothing. Rachel is the one who associated the term floater with "someone who sits back and does nothing"

I am watching BB 12 (ep 5) rn and aboutthe part who mixed up floater and coaster - in a talk in HoH room, Monet actually said she would "go after a floater, cause everyone is like, we can get them out later" which may have been the reason why Rachel said that famous quote, meaning she actually was the one who popularised it, but didn't come up with it

Rachel's famous line also led to a lot of casuals and recruited houseguests thinking comp wins has to do with being a floater and it drives me nuts. Especially, having to listen to players saying on the feeds like they even know what any of these terms mean. They should give them a BB dictionary with the rule book in the storage room just to make the feedsters happy! It's the least they could do for us!

everyone should have to watch this before going into the house. everytime a houseguest incorrectly uses floater i lose a year of my life.
