In some species like this spruce it is best to clearcut. It mimics natural disturbances like a windstorm or fire and promotes new seedling growth. Also spruce is likely to blow down if thinned so it would be wasted if it was selectively cut. In addition on these steep slopes it would be very hard to work around trees that were left. As the other commentator said most of this appears to be dead maybe from spruce budworm damage so they are salvaging what they can get out of it.

Most of the trees are standing dead. It's use em or lose em. See the way the bark showes off. Live bark sticks like glue.
