I work with rats and have some as pets, but I've never seen that reaction before! I can't tell if he's scared or if he just wants all the attention to himself!
@@sneepsnorp1404 I agree. I was stuck between trying to figure out if it was a fear response or a territorial one. The only time I've ever heard my rats make a noise even similar to that is if someone plays or grooms a little too roughly. Even then it's just a thin little squeak that seems to mean "Please stop."
I think the context here is that the two rats are being introduced. The gray one seems very shy and afraid of this other rat. It might be a case of lonely rat meeting another rat for the first time. Japan is notoriously bad when it comes to caring for pets so single rats and tiny cages are not uncommon there.
@@sneepsnorp1404 I doubt it was hurt by that rat specifically, because the white rat shows no signs of aggression or anxiety. It might have had bad experiences with other rats or has just never been socialised before.
@@jimj2683 This definitely happens in some cases, looking at this channel in particular though I find that accusation to be unnecessarily harsh. I highly doubt someone would make an entire channel dedicated to their (multiple generations of) pets and then abuse them off-camera so they "act cuter" when filming. Also, if the rat actually was being abused I don't think it would be calm when touched by a human but freak out when another rat approaches; it'd likely be the other way around. You can also see the hooded rat scream at its brother in other videos, where the owners aren't even close to it. Don't make these kinds of accusations without informing yourself or being able to back it up. It can not only hurt someone's image for no reason, but the implication that someone would hurt their pet for views is deeply harmful to most pet owners.
@@atro8749 actually if you know anything about rats, they are abusing them. It doesn't matter if they're physically abusing them. Rats are supposed to be kept in pairs or more. I know they are not aggressive rats to each other as they got the hooded rat (the one that is squeaking) when he was younger. They have never tried to introduce them properly, instead they put them both on the bed and let them like this. They're not supposed to be kept in tanks, let alone tanks that are the size of three rats sideways. Tanks don't have suffient ventilation for rats as they have very very poor respitory systems. They are supposed to have cages that have 10-15mm bar width. There's a cage size calculator online depending on the amount of rats you have so I can't give specific sqf sizes for it. They also only have 1 bed in this tiny tank. Rats are supposed to have as much stuff inside of their cages as possible. They're prey animals so having lots of hides and spaces to hide is the best thing for them - not being exposed to the outside all the time. I've also noticed one of them has had wooden shaving inside of their cage. Now, I can't say for sure what shavings they have but they're not supposed to have wooden shaving that contain pine etc and they have to be dust extracted and kiln dried. The dust they excrete is toxic. There's been studies to back this up too. Babies that have had the toxic shavings all die within two weeks. It secretes phenol which when inhaled is toxic and attacks the respitory tracts and can cause stress on the liver. I say this as an owner of 6 rats. 4 which have a cage that is from my floor to the ceiling that has an "active layout". This means I don't have shelving inside, and instead it's packed full of ropes, tunnels, climbing sticks, hammocks, beds, stepping stone shelves etc etc. My other 2 are senior rats that I adopted after being given up to a pet store. One of those rats IS aggressive to others that isn't his cage mate so I can't bond him with others. The other rat also is very ill that I'm treating for. We're discussing whether he can handle an xray or not (it's not advisable to sedate rats, especially if they're old like he is). They have a smaller cage, freddy max 2 to be specific, as they have free roam in our room whilst we are in the house. So I opted for a smaller one as they'll only be using it when they're asleep at night with us. Even then I've provided them with houses and stuff. Not as much as I'd like but the ill one has bad mobility and can't navigate a cage as well so it's makde "senior" proof. This person's rats are being abused and unfortunately this is the norm within Japan. I love Japan but their animal practices are an abomination. I don't think they're purposefully abusing them. I genuinely think they love their rats, but unfortunately this is the normal and its the same argument with goldfish in bowls. That's also not right but people swear down it is (it's not). At the end of the day it's abuse whether people don't think it is.
the little guy is afraid of his big brother. but he doesn't pay any attention to him with a single glance. but the little one is also curious and would certainly like to play with him
the squeaky rat is so cute, he looks almost exactly like one of mine! the face and the ears are the same, only the stripe on the back is slightly different... i hope he is less scared now and the two get along ^-^ (i don't speak your language but i'm assuming you're introducing the two)
Nope. They kept both rats separate on their own in tiny tanks with nothing inside except a house unfortunately. No introductions, just put together for content. Unfortunately it's just regular abuse 😔
@@cecerats Unfortunately so. The squeaking concerned me, even if it was introductions so I gave their other video a watch. @@cp.ngoose1178 i'm used to rats squeaking during introductions so i didn't think anything of that. some are just loud especially nervous or younger rats. the fact that they filmed it on their bed should've been a red flag i think

It does go well together but you have to introduce them properly. This "owner" owned two separate rats, kept them both separate in small tank cages (which aren't good for them) with one house. Whenever they filmed a video of them both together, they just put them both on the bed and left them to it. They were never introduced properly. They're lucky one of them wasn't mauled.
