I remember the very first time I heard this poem.. raw and real and Beautiful.. the beauty she could extricate from that ugly awful day still takes my breath away
I lived in Portugal at the time and I can't tell you how much listening to this struck me back in the day. It captured perfectly all the mess that the first Bush government unleashed into the world with the absurd and criminal Iraq war, the effects of which we are still experiencing today. They were the times of Air America, the times when The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was the sanest show in television. You thought it could only get better after that. How wrong were we.
nothing like it i know of, but another artist of a very different genre and view had his own very unique and memorable 9/11 melancholic adieu: ruclips.net/video/o2NXDJ4FabE/видео.html
I came across this video again and saw this - not a troll at all. There's nothing to be envious about - I don't think it's anything great or even remotely interesting. You can hear these same musings at any dime-a-dozen LA or NY coffee shops by textbook liberal arts majors. Claiming "vagina envy" is intellectual laziness exemplified, but that's not surprising considering the source.
@@DarkMadamX83 this song or poem is a marker for when things changed for us. have you seen the memorial Russia sent to us after 9/11? its a mockery to us and all women of the world. fuck putin!
***** i know what poetry is. this is the definition of pandering. you mean ani's taking on such taboo targets like "bush," "right wing politics," "big corporations" and "americana"? how cutting edge maaaaaaaan!
***** and? songwriters, authors, filmmakers and other poets have had long careers and have released some absolute shit during their careers. what's your point, and what does it have to do with this specific poem? that's like me saying that because paul mccartney has been a songwriter since the 50s, and was in the beatles, he's infallible and incapable of writing bad songs in the present.
***** and my problem is that nothing she said in this specific poem was presented in any way that is unique or interesting. it is structured in a way that is reminiscent of pandering, applause break tripe. where's the identity in anything she's saying? where's the unique message? you can literally find these musings by throwing a dart at any liberal publication, both professional and amateur. if that viewpoint is considered misguided, then i am happy to be; at least i can't be accused of being unoriginal.
and there have been a number of nyc artists who have made comments about it in the wake of that event, around the same time (and pretty much all of the other issues that are non-9/11 related way before).
@116117707662062003512 i didn't rip it apart, i responded to it. you just don't like what I have to say. she may have other poems that aren't bad; i don't know. i am only speaking about this particular poem because it's the only one i've heard. it's not that i refuse to swallow it because it's some kind of bitter medicine, it's because the message is as dull as dishwater and i've heard it countless times before (and much better done). if anything, your response seems more like the equivalent of blowing raspberries with your fingers in your ears than mine.
Brilliant, talented, beautiful DiFranco
@@elizabethmann3041I listen to it on a bi weekly basis.
Wow. 16 years later this song still sends chills up my spine

I don't think anyone is
Oh really? You're going to edit that comment and not tell your girl? How did this become my fault?
There were so many artistic responses milling around after 9/11 but I haven't been mowed down by anything like this. Is there anything else like this?

pandering, applause-break tripe.
