Asics has always made great shoes for any sport. I think they had a collaboration with Isiah Thomas back in the day too. I would also recommend checking out their tennis or volleyball shoes if you can't get the basketball shoes

The “sticky pad” is to protect the material so you don’t rip through the collar in the medial side of the shoe, like a lot of low top does, Like Kobes

Asics is the Toyota of the shoe world. I was given a pair in boot camp (2012) and I use them every once in awhile after 4 years of gym/trail usage and they held up like the 1st day I got them. All the ASICS I bought these past 4 years held up the same.

Finally a review of ASICS !!! ASICS had been killing in the basketball game recently! Gel hoop is the best one for me as a guard, the cushion is not the best, but if you’re not a high flyer, it should be adequate. By the way their “foam game” had been on point in the running shoe category in recent years I’m so interested in how they will introduce their foam in their basketball line!

Finally an ASICS basketball shoe. I’ve been wearing the ASICS Gelburst series for years since they come in wide versions. I feel like they’re more of in indoor shoe since there’s less cushion but they ride really low to the ground. Best traction I’ve ever had in any basketball shoes, and the fit is very consistent throughout the years.
Also that sticky pad thing on only one of the shoe is to prevent ripping from the friction when you’re playing. (Low cut basketball shoes always had that type of problem.)

According to the asian shoe testers, they deconstructed the shoes, and for the Nova Surge, the gel is only at the place you actually see which is on the side (i can send you screenshot if u want to). For Asics Gelhoop and gelburst, the gel is like a very tiny and thin (2-3mm) piece of gum in square shape (maybe 2cmx2cm) embedded in the midsole. And second, the tiny rubber piece at one side of the collar is to prevent the collar from damaging in prolonged use (because of friction between socks/laces and the collar i guess) , u can check the shoes that you wear for a long time and you will find that usually one side of the shoe collar is damaged ;). FYI, the Asics Gelburst and Gelhoop is even lighter in weight than the AJ34...so insane. Just this Nova Surge model is on the heavier side. I have a US size 11 Gelhoop V14 and they are just around 366 grams....And they are super super low to the ground and you feel really fast running in the Gelhoop, just the cushion may be a bit weak compared to other hoop shoes (maybe a little bit better than Nike phylon and a bit less bouncy than Adidas Bounce i guess?). Cushion level (lowest to highest): Gelhoop > Gelburst > Nova Surge. Thx Chris for the review btw, very nice :)

I bought a pair GelBurst many years ago when I was traveling in Japan and they were awesome. Like most ASICS runners cushioning is very very solid. Mine didn't have super rebound but it adsorbed impact well. Materials were premium back then. Fit maybe tricky for the western folks since the construction normally caters Asian foot shape but they do offer wide/normal/narrow options like New Balance.
If you dare you may want to look up TBF707 and TBF712 models. Those are old school stuffs and used to be made in Japan with Kangaroo leathers. They had the pre-gel era cushion and surprisingly hoop-able. Sadly ASICS rebranded it to PTG or Japan-S line and you may still be able to find the made in Japan variant but they don't feature the same tech...

Thank you very much for the review. I've been waiting to get these. I've played in old Asics gelburst. Asics never put a lot in cushioning but traction, support and torsional support are among the best. Invade nova and nova surge are their top of the line and cushioning rivals KT line.

From what I've heard the Asics Gelburst 24 is one of the greatest bball shoes of all time
I've used asics's running shoes and find them to be really comfortable- they just fit my feet really well ergonomically.
The really intriguing thing about asics shoes to me is their rubber compound- There's this one court I play bball on that quite literally has a layer of dust on top.(If yu wipe your finger on it the court friggin changes color lol) I've tried a variety of shoes on it, including Kyries, Currys, Harden 3s, Kobe 1s and Jordan 13s, all of which are supposed to bite really well, but I'm just on skates. But my friend plays in some plain asics running shoes, and he's stopping on a dime all the time. Something about their rubber is special.

I have the Asics Metarise which are Asics’ premium and high-end volleyball shoes and, while heavy, the outsole is the grippiest I have ever experienced. Literally give them any sort of hard floor, even concrete, and this thing squeaks. I haven’t been able to play in them much, but I can confidently say that Asics outsoles are among the best in the market in terms of grip.

I play with the Asics Nova Surge, it’s like the hightop version of this without the strap. Bought them from Japan. Love it. They are solid, unfortunately they don’t release many of these outside the Asia market.
Edit: the Nova Surge fit me true to size, (normal foot, slightly wide) traction and torsion support is excellent. Cushion reminds me of the adidas crazy light, but do not bottom out easily for 3-4 hrs of bball. Had mine for a year and the outsole looks quite new, but only play on gym courts. They also have extra heat wrap around outside ankle area so it doesn’t rub and destroy the fabrics.
Emailed Australia office a while back and they said they have no plans bringing the bball line anytime soon. And suggested me their volleyball and tennis shoes😑.

Totally agree on your weight comments, don't know why some testers care that much about it, if 2oz weight difference slows you down you have the weakest legs.

I'd have to agree that the weight issues with shoes is overstated. As long as it's not ridiculously heavy, like combat boots. But weight can be an issue depending on weight distribution. Like, some shoes are really imbalanced in the midsole in that it is either it's too heavy in comparison to other parts of the midsole. Or if the majority of the weight is in certain parts of the upper and it's not balanced with the midsole. Then yeah, I can feel the issues with shoe weight. But with all things being equal, I won't notice the difference between a 7 oz shoe to a 10 oz shoe.

I've tried Invade Nova, Gelburst and Nova Surge. My favorite one is the Nova Surge because nowadays it's really hard to get a solid hi cut basketball shoe when sometimes you need some extra support on your ankles. The weight is on the heavy side but do not feel clunky when hooping. These series are all pretty solid performance shoe but the cushion setup is a bit on downside. Not saying the cushion is bad but it could be better. The impact absorbing is really adequate but they are not giving the springy feeling like zoom or boost. Maybe Asics Gel is too heavy and not too responsive so Asics doesn't use it in a wide coverage area like full length. Anyway, I still enjoy a lot playing in my Nova Surge and it's one of my go-to for sure.

Hahaha, You should do the performance review by yourself! I tried so many brands but always come back to Asics. Asics makes three widths narrow, standard and wide so that I can pick the one fit me the best. I have gelhoop V8, V10 V11 wide last. V10 is a little bit narrower than V8 and V11. Traction pattern with V10 and V11 are beastly good and super light weight. Cussion is not adequate so I use a spenco thin insole that provides enough cussion without affecting the fit. When I go to Japan I want to try all the wide fit models so that I know what to order online for the next 5 years.

The gelhoop 12 is astounding !
Cushion is kinda trash but the grip is Kobe 4-ish
    Got my pair from Goat.

Asics basketball shoes are overall solid. Traction is like THE BEST, but cushion is often minimum.

Hey Nightwing man, this is a weird question but does AND1 still come out with higher end shoes and will you look at some of them?

I gotta agree alot of the basketball stuff coming out of the big names is very derivative it's like they just have a baseline product and slap a athletes name on it. Adidas have been charging full price for stuff that looks like a budget shoe.

I like Asics basketball shoes very much especially Gelburst series
very suitable for guard and forward
    great protection and traction
    I haven't worn nike's and adidas's basketball shoes for about 3 years.
I think the Gelburst , UNPRE ARS ,NOVA SURGE all better than INVADE NOVA. hahaha
so maybe you can try on other Asics basketball shoes
BTW I am from Taiwan so my English is not well

What's the best value BB shoe? Flytrap, Witness,?
*I remember Steve Nash before the Zoom BB had a signature model that was featured at Shoe Carnival

I’m curious to see how the Gel system works and see if the fact that it’s bottom heavy affects how you play.

I always break the the medial side of the lining on my basketball shoes after a few months of wearing. So maybe that extra coating is for durability?

You should try gel hoop and gel burst for Asics, they are pretty good

I appreciate this review. Asics should return to basketball stateside.
Looks like they don’t have a lot of half sizes though.

Hi. This style is actually not the best selling model. You can try Gelhoop for guard and Gelburst for forward. Those are way better.

Asics has made basketball shoes. A couple of characters in Slam Dunk wore Asics basketball shoes.

Ever since i read "slamdunk" (i know, very original),i have always been interested with asics basketball shoes,i think the shoe is pretty much very specific to japanese market ,from fit all the way to the traction,i ask some question to ma76bball (japanese youtuber),while he himself not exactly a fan of them ,most of his friend who wore asics bball swore that the traction simply bites the gym floor better, even in somewhat cold and slippery winter gym
