The lyrics are throw away lines of episodes in a rock star's life and make you smile. It is not a "deep" song but so intricate in its instrumentation that it is like a musical abstract painting - you might not understand the make-up but if you "get it", it just takes you over. Thank you Joe for this song that will never leave me and thank you Jay & Amber for sharing both your experience of the song and giving "the public" not only "what they want" but also spreading the word!

Jay and Amber, just to give you some clarifying info. Joe was never actually in REO. He did session work on a few tracks on their 1973 album Riding the Storm Out. That was before he joined the Eagles. He never did anything else with them after 1973. He is a very talented guitarist and producer that has done extensive session work for a lot of big names over the last 50 years.

Fun Fact: "Life's Been Good" is a humorous look at the spoils of fame and fortune associated with being a rock star. Walsh pokes fun at the lifestyle of wealth and fame, and the spoiled mentality - how it's not him who has changed, but everyone else.
In a 1981 interview with the BBC, Walsh explained: "I wanted to make a statement involving satire and humor, kind of poking fun at the incredibly silly lifestyle that someone in my position is faced with - in other words, I do have a really nice house, but I'm on the road so much that when I come home from a tour, it's really hard to feel that I even live here. It's not necessarily me, I think it paraphrases anyone in my position, and I think that's why a lot of people related to it, but basically, that's the story of any rock star - I say that humbly - anyone in my position. I thought that was a valid statement, because it is a strange lifestyle - I've been around the world in concerts, and people say 'What was Japan like?', but I don't know. It's got a nice airport, you know... so it was kind of an overall statement."

@@archstantonainthere4526 I always heard it was a mouth harp. Interesting and you are correct though. It's obvious that was the sound (mouth harp) they were going for, or at the very least it's what it sounds like. On the Ensoniq SQ1+ synth workstation I used to have the "mouth harp" patch with a heavy reverb patched in sounded exactly like the sound used in this song. If you're a musician chasing this sound and you don't have access to an Arp Odyssey, you would be better served knowing the "instrument" you're looking for, as many synths and samplers probably have mouth harp patches. So you're technically and historically correct.

One thing (among many) I like about Joe Walsh is he knows how to take it to church in the end.
It can be hard to bring the energy in a studio because it’s such a sterile environment. It’s a sonic laboratory. Being good at both studio craft and bringing that live energy is something few people even attempt to achieve. Most are good at one and not the other. Joe Walsh rocks.
That instrument you’re hearing is just an old school analog synthesizer. I’m not sure, but it’s probably the same kind Edgar Winter used in Frankenstein. Synths became accessible to musicians in the early 70s and helped make that decade the experimental wonder it was. Joe wasn’t doing the prog rock thing at all, but that didn’t mean he was any less adventurous.

He's also appeared on albums by Dan Fogelberg; Michael Stanley Band; John Entwistle (bassist for the Who); Don Henley; Jay Ferguson; Andy Gibb; Wilson Phillips; Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Steve Winwood. He also supplied the guitar work on Richard Marx's debut single "Don't Mean Nothing" (with two other Eagles supplying background vocals - former Eagle bassist Randy Meisner and current Eagle bassist Timothy B. Schmit).
Also, we lost two rockers last Thursday - Greg Kihn of the Greg Kihn Band ("The Breakup Song" and "Jeopardy") and Jack Russell, the original lead singer of Great White. Could we get tributes to the two of them?

Heard this since the 70's but here's some background info I didn't know from the wikipedia page:
"In a 2012 concert at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California, Walsh explained that the song's lyrics were largely true. He purchased a home in Santa Barbara, California, shortly before he joined the Eagles, then spent the next two years touring or recording and mostly living in hotels. He preferred a suite: if a hotel did not have one available, he would rent two adjacent rooms, "tearing out a wall" to create one. He owned a Maserati and did often ride in limousines. His driving license was lost, not because it was confiscated but because he lost his wallet with it in. He had an office he never visited with gold records on the wall and an answering machine. Walsh often stayed late at parties. Once, when he attempted to leave in the early morning hours, instead of finding the front door, he walked into a closet by mistake."
Joe goes into more detail on his YT channel on a live spoken word version about the song.
