Great review as always Joe. As someone who recently moved from an M340i RWD to an M440i xDrive (mainly because options I wanted were not available on the 3 series), my opinions are a bit different from yours.
I think the M440i GC is the better car compared to the M340i. The M440i GC is heavier, which sucks, but I find it to be more comfortable. This is due to the extra width at the front (more elbow room on the door) and the extra sound deadening which makes the car even more quiet than the M340i. I was never super impressed with the M340i on long trips, but the M440i GC is absolutely wonderful. This could be down to many factors, but it just feels like the M440i GC is better built and better insulated. It also feels like BMW retuned the B58/ZF 8-speed ever so slightly on the M440i GC, and it just feels even more willing to jump than in the M340i.
    Just my 2 cents.

And the drive to the mountains is a blast! Cheers.

6:30 you're basically testing the car with two 6'4" male in tandem. Normally, you'd put the tallest passenger in the front passenger seat and the next tallest (given the driver is tall) passenger in the right hand rear seat as the front passenger can make do with less leg room than the driver. But, yes, that seat WILL be crammed ONLY if you need to fit four 6'4" males in the car AND the drive insists on keeping his normal seat adjustment.

I think it is perfectly fine for a reviewer to dislike a car for whatever reason he chooses even if it is purely subjective. But when it is purely subjective and not based on tangible stuff the value of the review is diminished. All we learn is that someone doesn't like a car.
I have had this car (xDrive) for about 4 months. We've made a 10 hour (one way) trip in it. Several 3-4 hour trips. We drive it around town. It is my wife's daily driver. So I have some experience with it. I also drove the M340i before buying the GC.
The real problem with a review like this is that it gives love for the M340i and M340i touring but hates the car which is different from the others by very little other than shape. Not to mention that the M340i Touring isn't available in the US.....which makes that comparo fairly pointless to the larger part of the BMW market.
My thoughts? In terms of performance I see little or no difference between it and the M340i xDrive. The only real difference: Decent trunk and a bit more headroom in the 340 back seat vs huge hatch and less head room in 440i back seat. The main subjective difference is the styling. I like the lines of the 440 much better. Sleeker. Sportier. Definitely more distinctive. The 340 just looks like a car. Not much to set it apart from a Camry or an Accord looks wise. The big grill? I don't like it but as one reviewer pointed out it IS the new look and even if it is worse it makes the others look dated.
I am close to 6'5". Driver and front passenger area is great comfort wise. I don't even need to push the driver seat all the way back. Back seat? I can get in and out with no problem if the seat in front is at my 5'4" wife's setting. My head barely touches the roof. I could easily make around town trips back there. Not long trips. But I wouldn't want to make a long trip in the back of the 340i or any other mid sized sedan either.
For us, the utility of the rear hatch was much more important than the rear seating which gets used only very rarely. I cannot overemphasize how handy it is.
I find the GC to be an excellent grand tourer. I mean fantastic. Ten hour drive with a ton of luggage? No problem. Superb comfort. Excellent performance. Astonishing economy. It is also a great grocery getter.
What don't I like? The tech. All of it. iDrive 7 may be one of the better, maybe even the best, tech packages out there. But it still sucks. It makes almost EVERYTHING harder to do. It is not intuitive. It is not user friendly and in many cases it seems user hostile. The nav is abysmal. The Harmon Kardon stereo package is okay; not great though. The bright side is that I hear iDrive 7 is a lot better than 8!

I just got this car, so naturally I was hoping for affirmation from one of my favorite reviewers. I greatly respect and almost always agree with your opinions, Joe. So I am sorry this wasn't your cup of tea.
But as always, your review was honest and fair. The criticisms about the cramped rear seat, the higher cost vs. the M340i, and the design and larger dimensions are valid. Yet the only of those that bothers me now is the growth in height (1-1/2") and length (5-1/2") vs. the old 4-series GC.
Everything else has been improved: the driving (with an extra 52hp in the U.S. model, limited-slip differential, and a wider track); the range of sportiness vs. smoothness and of the ride (with an even better adaptive suspension); the engine sound (with new options to to balance or suppress it); the 8th-gen iDrive system; the incredible parking system; and the larger cargo space (up 30L to 470L). Its high tech also enables us to use an iPhone as a key, monitor the area remotely via the parking cameras, and start engine and the heater, AC or fan remotely.
We got this to replace the previous 440i Gran Coupe (F36). I came to love it for its hatchback design, gorgeous looks, smooth ride, and wireless CarPlay (starting in 2019). But the lease was ending. So we initially got the 2021 M340i that everyone raved about. It has more power, more rear seat room, and some of the new features of the M440 like the automatic parking and iDrive 8. But on the M-sport model I ordered we found the ride was too busy, almost harsh, even in Comfort mode with "Adaptive M" suspension. The design was a bit high and boxy. The trunk was spacious but still couldn't accommodate 2 large 29" suitcases, which the 440 GC swallowed thanks to its extra height. That settled it. I returned the M340 after only a year and ordered the new M440i Gran Coupe.
After just 2 weeks, I can confirm the new 4-series GC is much smoother and has all the capability of the M340i except for rear seat space. But it's very rare we have back seat passengers. I disliked the front grille at first but now I like it, maybe since it's more dramatic. We'll spend much more time inside the car enjoying the fantastic drive than looking at the exterior.

Strangely, I found my old 4GC even more practical than my touring (for what i do). I ride bikes and the width of the 4GC boot was better for storage and the hatch meant you could pretty much throw things in. I think the point of these 4dr “coupes” are the practicality of the rear hatch, sure there are some rear seat compromises vs the 3 series (or Audi 4 series), but if you’re a cyclist, being able to carry an expensive road bike inside your car is a pretty big deal. I’m currently in an Audi A5 Sportback for that reason. Fwiw I traded in my S4 with the idea of getting an S5, but through a Costco discount, the faster shifting DSG and the A5 being > ½ second slower it just made more sense for me. That said, I’d be very tempted to look hard at the m440i if also offered as a full-on M4 with a manual transmission - still offered here in the USA.. A solid/useful review btw.

I believe the wheels look off because the car has taller side panels and extra trim pieces. The i4 needs those to hide the batteries and this just uses the same parts to save costs. That's why you can get this with a 20" option for a more balanced look while the 2 door coupe only offers 19s.

As a family with two kids, the car is perfectly practical and surprisingly spacious (i'm 6ft and fit fine behind myself in the back). Yes, it's not a 5 Touring but for the profile shape, it's very good. The 4 series was created to fill the gap when the 3 series was fairly a much smaller & limited optioned car than the 5 series. It then added a clear-cut sporty look probably a great target for the successful-ambitious single male in its early or mid 30's. It doesn't make much sense today with so many options in the 3 line and agree not appealing on the design side for whatever target. Ought to be very brand loyal to get into one IMHO.

I guess it is not a big surprise that a major manufacturer is selling a swoopy 4 door coupe with less practicality for a premium over saloon and touring versions. The original 4 series Gran Coupe seemed to be squarely aimed at the company car lists where 4 doors are often compulsory and you wanted something a little different from the plebs. Also, if you don't have a mountain bike, kids or a ton of stuff to carry the 4 door coupe can appeal. I have none of the afore mentioned pre-requisites but do have 3 medium dogs, so a Gran Coupe would appeal. As for rear space, on the infrequent occasions were I am giving mates a lift to the pub and they complain.........they could always walk ! Looks are a matter of taste which is what it came down to in this review. That and cost. For me, I hate the look of station wagons. Love the look of the 4 series gran coupe…which looks like a coupe which is sportier IMO. It combines almost all the sportiness of the two door with almost all the functionality of the station wagon. There is a reason that these account for 50% of 4 series sales and the likes of Audi, Mercedes, Kia, the electric variants and others are jumping on this body style. It offers a lot and looks pretty good…again, in my opinion.

This is really disappointing from BMW, they have dropped the ball with the 4 series. I waited anxiously for the 4 GC for over 2 years and this is what they came up with?! This type of a car should be beautiful to warrant the higher price and it's anything but beautiful. When you first reviewed the 4 Coupe you said the looks were "starting to grow on you" and I was trying to convince myself that the look is ok and I will still buy it. But to be honest, if you want to buy this car you should like it from the start and not try to squint to make it work.
Now I'm gravitating towards the Audi 5 series SB as BMW 4 GC is just off the list now. Looks awesome and it even has a little more room in the back seats. The only problem is that the S5 is diesel in the EU now...so my only choice now appears to be to upgrade and go for the RS5?
