I'm a Belfast man, protestant with mixed family roots (left foot and right foot) in Crumlin and now living 12,000km from Belfast. I enjoy songs from both sides of the religious divide - they are part and parcel of Irish history; celebrate it.
I’m a Dublin Catholic, residing in Canada, and every time I hear this song I just smile. I think it’s great that Irish men like the Dubliners can sing “the Ould Orange Flute” and “The Sash Me Father Wore” for the sheer fun of it. They are great songs, so witty and rhythmic, and how can anyone take offence? And I’m speaking as a traditional Roman Catholic with a good sense of humour and full knowledge of my Irish history.
I agree with you but in fairness if your living in a catholic area and every July protestants March through banging their drums blowing their flute and singing sectarian song can you blame people for getting offended.
This song is fairly popular in the Irish folk scene among non-Orange bands, due to it being both a great song and being humorous rather than aggressive or militant.
As a Canadian of Irish-Catholic descent enjoying this song is like enjoying Bushmills Whiskey (Which is considered by knuckledraggers, my dad included to be "Protestant Whiskey"and he'll call me an Orangeman for enjoying it) ,The song is humourous and non-triumphilaist like Bushmills is sweet to the toungue and nose and gets you drunk,Love it.
I was brought up a prod, I sang all the songs without really knowing what I was singing about, my papa was an Irish Catholic from donegal and I'm actually quite ashamed of myself for singing those songs, thankfully I grew out of that nonsense, live and let live, protestant and catholic, we're all one
This song is actually about a relation of mine, My Granny used to to say "The only turn coat in the whole family, and they had to write a song about him", lol. Seems ridiculous now, my son nephews, all dating Catholic girls, thankfully most of us in N. Ireland have let go of our programmed Bigotry

Yes. Nice picture by the way. Isn't that the flag of an independent Ulster? Could be wrong, I thought it was! Nice flag anyway. God bless the Ulster-Scots.
@richjohnf The Old Orange Flute is an Irish song lad, if you want a united Ireland you must recognise the protestant minority in Ireland as Irishmen and Irishwomen and as your brothers and sisters, otherwise you shall never know peace in your country.
Some form of united Ireland is fairly inevitable regardless of how entrenched some elements of 'loyalism' are. But I agree with you, the unionist tradition which is a minority on the island should be recognised and accepted. But the reality is partition was very wrong - the current leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, Doug Beattie, yhinks likewise (although in his opinion all of Ireland should still be part of the UK etc). The overwhelming majority of protestants in the 26 counties feel as 'Irish' as anyone and so they should. Most protestants in the Republic are nationalists. Why? Because they are from Ireland and proud of it. Religious faith should not define nationality and it doesn't in the Republic, which is a far more progressive society than N.I. The sad reality for unionists in the North is that vast majority of people in England see Billy from Newtownards as much of a 'Paddy' as Seán from Wexford. In a 'new Ireland' the Twelfth should be a national holiday.
The ale flute still playing the protestant boys. Just a brilliant and funny song. Being from bangor i sang the chorus as a kid but didnt realise the meaning behind the song.
Mt grandfather was a Scot, died (1937) before I was born but i was given his tin whistle. In his honor I tied an orange ribbon around with a big bow. Mt son now has it. My great-grand father was an Orangeman from Belfast. Prouf of my heritage.
It's borders were changed when the 6 counties became a Gerrymandered state-let, set up by the English to give protestants a Majority. Is that what you're referring to? Ulster always was and always will be 9 Counties.

Come on lads! The religion is meant to help peoples' lives become better, not to split one nation into two peaces: Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. I feel sad about it, because I am Georgian and my country has struggled same things from Russia as Ireland has struggled from England. It is stupid to loose your compatriots because of how you pray, what do you call a person who represents Church - priest or minister. It does NOT matter. The homeland, homecountry is more important than religion.
@richjohnf What I would most like to see was an English, Irish, Welsh and Scottish nation united in brotherhood and equality regardless of race or religion for the mutual prosperity of us all. The differences that divide us pale in signifigance in comparison to the ties that unite us, our long shared culture and history. Sorry 1995Scotsman but a United Ireland within the EU which federalists want to break up into regions and cities isn't on the agenda. I hear a lot of people getting mad over the sash now can one of you Catholics tell me what is so offensive about the sash it's a song about a piece of clothing and doesn't even mention Catholics in it

The green for the irish catholics and the white is for peace however after partition the protestant population has dwindled from 10% to 3% . The sash may not be offensive in the republic, where the Orange Order is pretty much non-existent, but in Catholic enclaves of the Six Counties is seen as an icon of Unionism. The sash-wearers for their part like to rub it in by marching through said enclaves. And having googled the lyrics of "the sash", I can confirm that the "terror to them Papish boys" reference does appear in at least some versions. As do references to "Aughrim and the Boyne", two battles where the Catholics got the worst of it.
