I vividly remember as a kid playing in the pool with my sisters in the mid 70's, as we bounced around on inner tubes, making waves as big as we could, as we sang the lyrics "Don't rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby, rock the boat, don't tip the boat over," over and over again as we tried NOT tipping our inner tubes over! Oh yeah... those were the days, my friend... We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way...
I am now 66 years of age. When I was 16 years old, I worked with Bernard St. Claire Lee ( man with headband in video), House of Pancakes, 443 East Manchester blvd, Inglewood, California. This was before Hues Corporation became recognized. He was an opening cook and I was a weekend bus boy. He would rehearse after work. I am pleased he got recognized for his talent. He was truly a nice man and I don't recall him ever saying anything bad about anyone else. He passed away a couple of years ago. He grew up in Santa Monica, Ca and was part American Indian. I remember him fondly. He gained recognition after " Rock the Boat" and did sound track for the late 1970s Black spoliation movies. I became a doctor of optometry at age 26.We never met up after leaving the House of Pancakes.
I was also 13 when this record came out, and I bought it at Fred Meyer when they had a much better record department. Since then I have found a good used pressing for my radio show collection, TWO pressings of "Love Corperation" for each collection, their first release "Freedom For the Stallion" and an oldie pressing of "Rock the Boat". I am still looking for "Rockin' Soul", which would definitely be on the soundtrack of my one year at Holy Redeemer.
I saw the Hues Corporation perform at the Colosseum Theatre in Johannesburg on September 15th, 1978. I still have the ticket stub in a frame, along with all my other great gig tickets! These guys were fantastic!
@penguin9965.....the memories.....one of my 1st memories of this song, was I was riding with my Aunt n uncle in their early 1970s AMC Hornet Sportabout Wagon on the AM radio...
When music was BIGHT and ORGANiC and YET ... still accessing --- great harmonies!! Such a great childhood memory of my brother and I standing on a tire in a grassy field holding hands bouncing from side to side, on a old tire in a field, as he would be 4 years of age and myself 6 yes. I MISS YOU , MY DEAR BROTHER F R A N K I E He died of AIDS in 1986 . ( No mindless ticking from a computers spitting out zeros and ones !!)
I'm in my 60s now, but I feel like a teen after hearing this again. Gotta love how near the end, starting at about 2:35 the lead singer goes "row yeah ... row yeah" instead of the usual over-used "oh yeah ... oh yeah" you've heard a million times in other songs. Remember, they're on a BOAT, right? *grin* VERY clever and light-hearted fun! ROW YEAH!
Reminds me of the episode of THAT 70S SHOW when Red, Kitty, Bob and Midge got into the SPECIAL brownies the kids made, and this song was playing in the background while they sat around the kitchen table eating em, stoned outta their gourds!🤣🤣🤣🤣
my sister and her boyfriend won a dance contest at the Golden Tides in Seattle, WA and a trip to Hawaii. Th three songs they danced to were Best of My Love, This Will Be and ROCK THE BOAT!!! The contest was sponsored by KKRZ 100....such great tunes and times!!!
I heard this song on my first cruise ever - January 18, 2004 on the ms FANTASY - while the cruise ship has been retired the memories will live on forever. I love this music. Wish disco would come back.
Yep. I was only 6 years old at the time but I remember very clearly how that particular summer was dominated by this song. I remember hearing it everywhere I went that summer. It was a massive hit, and it kicked off the disco era properly. Still gets stuck in my head daily, almost 50 years later.
I'm dedicating this monster hit of the Summer of 1978 to my now late Mother, who through the lens of time, l see her dancing in the kitchen as she cooked dinner after just getting off work. She would have on that snap front thin cotton Summer housecoat with her fuzzy slippers, just a DANCING!😅🤣🤣🤣 She would have been 99 this December of 2024. Sending big hugs to your spirit, Mommy.
I was cruisin' in summer of 1974 when this was popular. I thought to myself, 'this sounds different man'. Little did I know that this song and Rock Your Baby by Geoge Mcrae were very early disco songs with more to come as the 70s progressed. Never was a disco fan but now the songs bring back memories of when I was 19. Now I am almost 70. Oh well. I'm stayin' alive, ah ha hah stayin' alive. Not a member of the 27 club.
Great groove on this with world class musicians on the track - Wilton Felder, Joe Sample, Larry Carlton & Jim Gordon. The bass is laying it down throughout and the surprise is the guitar rave on the outro. Awesome production all the way. Never gets old!

The Hues Corporation* was a LA pop and soul band formed in 1969. The vocal trio was composed of Hubert Ann Kelly, St. Clair Lee and Fleming Williams as lead vocalist on “Rock The Boat” (1974). The piece uses nautical imagery to describe a lasting love relationship : they have “sailed through every storm” with “a cargo full of love and devotion,” so there’s no reason to rock the boat❕ However, as St. Clair Lee claimed : “It was a love song without being a love song.” “Rock The Boat” was basically a metaphor for disrupting the status quo. This was one of several hit songs from the 70s with the term “rock” in the title. But unlike tunes such as “Rock On” by David Essex and “Rock And Roll Heaven” by The Righteous Brothers, it had nothing to do with rock music. 💜🛥️💚 * The name Hues Corporation was a pun on the Howard Hughes Corporation (with the word “hue” meaning “color”).
I was only 6, but it brings back a flood of memories for me as well. I remember hearing it everywhere we went that summer. Grocery stores, car washes, amusement parks, the beach, convenience stores, even at the dentist’s office. All summer long this stayed at the top of the charts. Really takes me back to my childhood like few other songs can.
It’s pretty much a daily occurrence for me, and has been ever since I first heard it in the summer of ‘74. Not a single day passes without this earworming me at least once.
I hear this and I'm suddenly 7 years old, perched on the back "rumble seat" of our big blue 1972 Pontiac Safari wagon with my dopey little brother Brady as Mom hauled ass towards Long Island to spend the day with my cousins in Syosset. The radio was tuned to WABC and the inimitable Dan Ingram as this began streaming through the speakers. Mom cranked up the volume and before you knew it, we were all singing along like pint-sized pop stars as we blasted across the GWB like Mario Andretti...

Big hit in Europe in the 70ies. Very good singers all the 3 of them.
My late mom use to play all these songs growing up. Got my taste in music from her
One of my favorite songs from the 1970s! ❤
Was born in 2007 but I grew up with my parents constantly playing oldies that I've become addicted the music from the 60s, 70s and also 80s

A great summertime tune.
Summer of ‘74
I was five in 1974 which was a great year for motown. This song along with Rock your Baby and others molded my early youth.

No My School Bus Driver in 1977 had An 8 track Tape player in his School Bus and He used To play This Song for us in The Way To High School!

Larry Carlton..... nuff said.
Had no idea those heavyweights were the back up band. Makes sense though.
The guitar fade out always reminded me of Steely Dan so I looked it up pre-internet. Carlton also played on Streisand’s version of “Stony End.”
I didn't know that Carlton played on this. Wilton Felder playing the bass on this makes sense despite it doesn't sound like a Motown track at all
@@EnlightenedRogue It has some of the Carlton tones in there but it is mixed so low that I can't tell
Oh, I had so many jean skirts, jean jackets, jean outfits, patchwork, rhinestones love it. Thank you for this video, darling.
Such a smooth song. Like a mix of Calypso and Disco.
This song makes me sooooo happy!!!!!!
This song reminds me of 1974 when my Mom and I used to watch Our Hit Parade on TV every Saturday night!
Used to start our gym displays with this cracking tune!
Reminds me of dancing in high school, bless her soul. Genuinely enjoyed it.

In the summer of 1974 when I was 13 radio station WDAS FM was playing this song regularly...😃
One of the greatest tunes ever recorded!
If this only came out in 1971, it would have been the perfect theme for The Poseidon Adventure.
This song was awesome when I was growing up. I had not heard it in decades until they played a snippet of it in the science fiction film The Martian. I had to search it out online after that. It is a timeless gem!
