Been waiting for this since it was announced, I stopped playing on Wings when i found out and I've been following horizon and waiting patently since. It does look promising though. Here's hoping.
I was super exited about living again the experience, but reality exploded in my face since after a few weeks i remembered how time consuming this game is. Id love to play again, but many things should be changed, like repop on mobs, drops on NM wich is crazy how over camped they are. Speed up a bit things. Most of the players there are around the 40s
I want the vision to be fully realized; Yet, I can see a huge horrible storm over the Horizon in this point and time. Bigger they are, the bigger the mess is gonna be, and I hope the staff are prepared.
As someone who has played/streamed all of the pservers (ya I am abit crazy) looking forward to my final home. I know half the Devs and they are good peeps it will be fun.
@6:04 you toggle on wireframe and back off quickly, how are you doing that? the only times i used it, it was a very slow and clunky process of typing /commands.
It will be the same experience as all others in the fact that if you have a shell or friends that run you through the hard HNMs, quests, missions it will be fun and others will have to try to respond to shouts in time to get a spot or never get any content complete. Same with endgame stuff the GM shells will be killing kirin twice a week and the others will have a hard time. Of course it's like that on all private servers and even retail to a degree so I don't see how this could be any different
This time those GM shells are gonna be the only people with access to the source code... so in addition to controlling all the endgame content, they are also going to be shaping the entire meta in their own vision of how FFXI is "supposed" to be played. I'm not optimistic
Do mobs depop if charmed and released out of their area? 12/12/05 update screwed this and if that's the case here then for me, it's not a classic server.
They will provide era style of play. Example: adventure follower will be provided in a patch soon after launch but no trusts will be created cause that ruins cooperable gameplay.
I'm just hoping that any job changes aren't particularly drastic / are minor tweaks over any kind of rework. More information beforehand would be nice for reassurance as I've forsaken playing my Galkan Sausage+1 fantasy for a Hume as I'm wanting to try some opposites to what I did in retail 75 (going BRD/WHM to get an easier foothold and then BST and some THF for farming) without being hugely gimped by the lack of MP (well, more so the access to gear to make up for the deficit). I was mostly a Taru DRK and THF in classic retail so I know the pain of keeping up. Doubt I have the time for two characters this time around. But that Galka warrior & monk will be haunting me in my dreams... Honestly looking forward to making some new XI friends from next week :D (but not looking forward to NM camping all over again - anyone have any early / easy farming tips or suggestions for old classic guides?)!
You can check the channel of this video. I make a bunch of guides on getting started and NM hunting. These were made on Wings but I'm pretty sure most of these will still be fairly accurate
This project seems like a cool idea! However, I think it was ultimately the community that min-maxxed the meta to the point where things like holy bolt burns become basically forced. And part of that same community is going to come play on Horizon, too. Ultimately I think that sort of meta shift comes from people wanting to find the best/easiest way to achieve things in the game, so I think it's only a matter of time before gimmick parties start to arise. It's just going to be a matter of time before people find the "best" way to play on Horizon, too, if that's what they're motivated to do. I think I'd have to disagree on the point you brought up about the Horizon staff being "transparent" about the changes they're making to the game. The descriptions on the job cards are incredibly vague, the policy from the staff is response to questions has been mostly "play and find out", and the source code for HorizonXI is closed source. That's all well and good, but I think that creates massive information asymmetry, where a certain subset of the player base will have direct access to information like PDIF/qRatio/etc to calculate damage/performance, while the rest of the players get....these cards. Since most of the staff with access to that information that founded Horizon were active endgame players on WingsXI, it doesn't seem like that will create a very equitable experience for casual folks, with the meta essentially being controlled by linkshells who have members with access to the source code. Hopefully I'm wrong
I appreciate this comment quite a bit. You might actually be correct, while their discord is filled with information and teasers, its true theres no real specific and the answer we get is mostly ''play to find out''. I feel like this might just be a way to genertae additional hype for people to try the server though. As you said, guess well have to find out ourselves. Im still pretty positive this server CAN be great, but it is very ambitious. Well find out soon enough :)
My personal opinions on Horizon is this. They're either going too far, or not far enough, and that's going to create many issues over time. Too far in that they're doing stuff like class balancing, weapon balancing, mob placement changes, quest reward changes, etc. Not far enough in that they're only doing them to relatively small extents. I personally think I'd be WAY more interested in Horizon (even though I am playing it, though in large part because a surprisingly large amount of my retail LS is) if they had gone even further than they did. Like I think people would've loved it if pretty much every zone had completely new mobs, NMs, quests, etc. - essentially becoming a sort of "fan-made remaster and expansion". Instead we have this weird amalgamation of "some stuff is different, some stuff is identical, and we're not really telling you any specifics" I also just have this issue with so many private servers sticking to old 75 era grinds that just... don't really fit a private server. Most people aren't going to invest 2 years to get an excalibur and an aegis for their plds. Most groups aren't going to be able to get 32 people to do dynamis with efficiently. WHY are we still seeing private servers use the original dynamis instead of the new and vastly improved version? Etc., Etc., Etc. My issue with a lot of private server projects (and "old era" mods/servers/etc. for almost any game) is that the people making them simply fail to see why changes were made in the first place. King Behemoth was changed to a force pop because having to wake up at 3AM to go camp KB was a horrendous experience. Level Sync was introduced because it sucks to actually find a full party of people at a specific level range on the correct jobs. Dynamis was changed because seriously, doing a 32 person event for 6 months to a year to make ONE weapon for ONE person is just terrible design. Skillup rates were changed because it's just pointless mindless tedium where you get nothing else done, but it's something you HAVE to do. Etc., Etc. It honestly just... this is way too harsh of a word to use, but "infuriates" me when I see people just flocking to a project and being "super excited about it" when it's pretty obviously designed by people that don't actually understand game design. When they revert changes that were universally better simply because "it's accurate to how the game used to be", without actually understanding WHY the change was made in the first place. The difference between 75 era Dynamis and Dynamis Divergence is that Dyna-D rewards everyone equally. Everyone gets RP. Everyone gets unlocks. 75-era, everyone gets relic armor and generally speaking 1 person gets a relic weapon. Unless they're implementing stuff like personal drops, that's not really going to change. You have all of these things that prevent multi-boxing and hardcore botting, but still keep lockout timers and level caps and whatnot in place, which forces people to have to deal with actually finding people to do missions, trying to actually manage a full-sized dyna LS, etc. etc. - Which ends up being reliant on there being a legitimate playerbase, which... isn't guaranteed in the least. I just feel like they're overall TOO focused on trying to achieve some arbitrary vision and "check boxes" with next to no regard for how the server ~actually plays~. I'm not grinding for a year to get a G.horn. There's literally no reason for me to do that. Grinding dynamis twice/week for the next 12 months isn't fun, especially when you have to deal with the inevitable ls drama that always ensues because people that play this game have like the most fragile egos I've ever seen. (4 years of running a world first literally top players in the game guild on swtor, 0 drama. 3 months back on retail, like 4 instances of major drama. There's something seriously wrong with the people that play XI.) ...especially when most jobs are more fun to play on current retail, and y'know, you can realistically get a job from 1 to ML50 BiS multi-REMA in like a couple months. There's a reason SE made certain changes. And yes, for the record, I'm legitimately interested in seeing a perma-75 cap server - Something that has 75-tuned implementations of every bit of content retail has. But what I'm not interested in is being stuck with 75-era grinds that never should've really even existed in the first place, and were a product of lses being able to actually have like 50 people show up to an event.
wait, you are allowed multiple characters on Eden??? I was banned from eden for using my high lvl summoner to power lvl my alt account, and the gm never told me why I was banned when I asked, only said "you know what you where doing, bye!" and I always thought it was for multi boxing.... If thats allowed then WHY the hell was I banned?!?!? screw Eden
from their website : Each player is only allowed to have 2 characters logged in and active, with an additional third character confined to a city and idle
Yeah, I got so much hate on Eden for suggesting to get rid of dual boxing where people just rule a heal bot mule and then the anti social behaviors rose with indifference and pettiness. Glad to see people on WingsXI and HorizonXI see the purity of the game by eliminating dual boxing.
I would've stop playing if it weren't for my 2nd character, so I see why people got mad at you. Sometimes I don't have time to wait for a party so I just level alone (very slowly), but I still have my Linkshell and we do a lot of things together so I don't see why dual boxing would be bad for the game. This is a game where you will need more than 2 character to progress.
