Here's How I Fixed A Bricked Nintendo Switch

  • Over a year ago a third party dock bricked my Nintendo Switch. I was mostly sad to see my save data stuck on the bricked system since this was before cloud backup saves were possible. Today we are finally going to fix the Switch and then backup my Xenoblade Chronicles 2 save data that I've been missing for over a year.

Xenoblade games in general are 200+ hours games if you want to complete them 100%. And X is really sidestory dependant in order to get the "full picture" of the world and the story. I havent finished the XC2 and im still halfway (i think? going through chapter 5) and i've already have 87 hours and a half (Dont worry if you go just for the main story its probably a third of that time, this is just me taking my time with the sidequest, screenshoots and farming like a madman). So yeah if you want a good JRPG for this summer get it with the Season pass if you can (adds more sidequests, new blades/weapons, another prequel game and challanges). PD: please READ THE GODDAMN TUTORIALS. The combat system seems "simple" and "easy" and when you less expect it, it shoves those "simple&easy" in your ass, and starts asking for attention to the combat, using all the mechanics it has been showing you since the beginning is the key, so please pay attention.

  • @Drewsefer89

You're probably really close to beating XC2. I beat it at 120 hours. The ending will be well worth the long wait you had to go through. Congrats on getting all your saves back. Just another reason why Nintendo should implement local save transfers as an extra precaution.

You should take that board and put it into a Gamecube case (maybe even a 3D printed mini one if space allows it).
Improve it by sticking a big old PC heatsink on it. So it'll be 90% fanless. Have working controller ports etc.
You could even sell the leftover switch parts to finance the build.
Hell, if you really want to go crazy; toss a wii board into it too. Then you'll be able to go gamecube, wii, and switch in one console...

The connector for the ribbon cable that goes to the screen, is very easy to accidentally damage, when plugging the cable back in.
You can bend some of the very fragile pins very easily, when plugging the ribbon cable back in, and so the screen won't work correctly, or at all, in portable mode. You won't even feel it happening.
That would probably be the first thing to check, when you decide to give it another look over. :)

Hey spawn wave!!!! I don't know if you're gonna see this because this is a old video I'm posting on.... But I just want to say that my switch now has this issue From a first party dock... I've been talking to my dad about this issue... (Works on airplane electronics for a living) And he seemed confused by this problem being a thing when I 1st brought it up... Stating that 1 of the main purposes of a power control IC is to manage incorrect power flow and prevent that from causing harm, not to be harmed by it.... If a power control IC cannot handle Incorrect power flow... Then that part is faulty from the drawing board...

Suggestion... a glob of AmTech Tacky Flux and 118c to 120c hot air treatment might help improve the solder joints with minimal work and effort.. from 3rdparty tech to tech...

Might be cool if you took all the internals out and made and fitted to the dock or a new housing and turned it into a console. Basically no screen. Think i would leave the joycon rails somewhere in the build, for charging purposes.

Switch. What is this switch thing? Does it work with gameboy? That just came out and I'm loving being able to play portable games. Such a revolution. 1989 is a great time to be alive. I can't wait till 90 to see how many games come out.

Everything I know about smd soldering I learned by watching Louis Rossmann's videos. BTW, did you check to make sure the LCD cables were unharmed and put back properly? It's very easy to miss that kind of thing.

Probably a loose or damaged ribbon cable from the screen.

You should definitely use that Switch for homebrew and all of that without worrying about too much, i'm curious to see what mods and hacks there is available.

Turn it into a homebrewed Switch with over kill fans and thermals to keep it cool for huge overclocking, and maybe add Gamecube controller ports and stuff!

No you still can't. unless you make a custom shell and take out the innards of an official Nintendo switch and simply place it inside without modifying it whatsoever

Good question, I'm also interested to know the answer. I would summise yes as long as they have come up with a power sourcing solution for them as the switch does not conform to usb-c "standards"

Like the two other people above me mentioned all 3rd party docks are at risk of bricking your switch. The only one I know that doesn't brick your switch is the best buy dock

    • @SpectralDynamite

@@daredae436 Actually, I've been using the Jumpgate dock from Skull & Co. for over a month now and it's been working great. Those guys actually looked into what was causing the bricking and even posted a video detailing their findings. They also post a video for every firmware update the Switch gets to prove that their dock still works. They've certainly earned my confidence.
I'm not saying you should get one or that it isn't risky, but as long as my Switch functions, I can say that the Jumpgate's the one 3rd party dock out there that's safe to use.
I do wonder if Best Buy's Insignia dock still works, tho. I've heard literally nothing about it in over a year.

Does the console plays games fine? Have you done any in dock stress testing?
If you did, and you can't get it to work outside of docked mode, I think you should do the "boxed" switch AND homebrew it :P

Good job on the recovery. I know you already covered the Joy Con Drift Spawn but using the Magic-NS usb adapter shows that the Joy Cons do not drift at all. I was wondering if you can look at the adapter as I think it might point to the Switch system itself is the problem when it receives the Bluetooth from the Joy Cons.
I posted on my Twitter a video show how extra table the Magic-NS adapter is.

@@Krytern yeah I already did that! it was a rpi 2 and I went ahead and got an rpi 3!
the rpi 2 still works! the chip is apparently the USB controller chip, so just usb isnt working. and yeah, its a challenge I feel I should step up to, but yeah, after this video it confirms that you better have a damn good reason to put in all that effort.

Possibly the reason you have no screen is the solder bridge on the right side of the chip.
