- James Dickey's acclaimed Southern gothic novel becomes a landmark experience in suspense with John Boorman's resonant, disturbing picturization of a river rafting trip that ends in horror and disaster. As desolate a slice of Americana as has ever been put onscreen.

Agreed. And yeah, the image of Burt Reynolds holding the bow and getting ready to release the arrow is stunning.
A friend of mine saw this when he was 16. He said that the rape scene"completely turned my head around. "
Neil LaBute is the perfect commentator for this movie. It fits a lot with the tones of his movies.
One of the best movies ever…
Well done, Neil. Thank you.
Rewatching this after years and years and I was surprised that my favorite parts are the expositions by Reynold's character before everything literally goes south.
i cannot imagine how different this movie would be being directed by sam peckinpah and starring lee marvin and marlan brando
I was never really sure if that guy just fainted and fell in the water or got shot.
Still debated to this day
One of the greatest man against nature movies ever made.

Killing me wont bring back your God Damned Honey!
I found out the locals don't like the movie. Go figure.
+Geoff Shaw this movie was the beginning of shaming Appalachian culture and the stereotype is still prevalent today with many in America.
I wonder if this film would have been so 'acclaimed' had the setting been in an urban area...
unfortunately some stereotypes are applicable.
