Hilary is my violin-artistry-hero for our youthful generation. Why? From time to time, through heaven's providence, men cannot carry the ball of expertise to bless God's children with superb aural and visual performance. So, the LORD chose a good woman of character. This is Hilary's time, and no one will rob her of this blessing to us in our generation. Its like the olympics: the technical demands for success demands innovation. And Hilary is it!

Speaking as a layperson, I just can't comprehend how she could possibly remember the whole piece like that. What a talent!

When Hilary enters, you can hear the innocence of a little girl which is very touching.

Anyone that is good enough to be playing in that high level of orchestra is stunningly good and probably very happy and content that they are so gifted.
Additionally I would doubt that all orchestral players would want to have to tour as much, be away from their family as much, or have the same level of pressure as Hilary Hahn and similarly phenomenal players have during their playing lives.
Anyway, more relevantly, this is a beautiful performance again from Hilary Hahn. What a star.

One of my favourite violin concertos..so in the style of movie music,of course...Mutter's recording is extraordinary too and so it is the Quirine Viersen's rendition of the Cello concert in the documentary DVD about Korngold.

I would love to play in an orchestra like this one! I am viola player and studied in school and played Late Mozart String Quintet Opus (high number) I love those pieces. Play 2nd viola on an instrument my husband made ( Zang Violins, Ltd. ) and he plays 2nd violin on an 17 or 18 century violin that we imported...the arch is so high the if you turn it on its side you can see straight though the F holes! Thanks for sharing this video with the Universe!

Erich Korngold created film music, he is to film music was Beethoven is to the romantic era. It is not that Korngold sounds like film music, film music sounds like Korngold.

@zzfinance she is the pianist who plays with Hilary. That video is from DVD "Hilary Hahn - A Portrait" where they play together as well - Mozart, i think.
That concerto is a masterpiece, i must say :) and Hilary Hahn plays it perfect as always :)

That is called a "mute." There are different types, but the most popular is the model by Tourte. It is used to soften the sound of the violin. If you listen to parts when she is not using it and when she is using it, you will hear a different timbre if you pay attention.

there seems to be a more meditative quality to her interpretation of the music, rather than the usual romance and passion.
it's almost ethereal. Don't hear it like this too often

@frisonne1308 Gierck1 might just deny that, although I would tend to doubt it, but remember that this is just gierck1's opinion and doesn't in any way detract from the validity of your opinion on the performance or, for that matter, the validity of Hahn's performance. One should also remember that both Mutter and Heifetz were older when they made the recordings being compared to Hahn and had much more experience, both on the instrument and in life. It does make a difference...

    Utopian design-
I completely agree with you that Hilary IS a woman of character, and she's very technically gifted, and absolutely a blessing to our society b/c of her phrasing. your comment seems a bit sexist to me, though.
"Men cannot carry the ball of expertise from time to time?" so Hilary is the exception, that most women can't be experts in their field? Hilary was not chosen; to get to this level, she had to work her butt off. hours of frustration, hours of pain, AND mental exhaustion!

It doesn't have the razor intensity of Heifetz--no one ever does--but it breathes more and is maybe more more beautiful as a result.

@JMG1951 No he didn't. Max Steiner did. He was the first to integrate the score within scenes and not just over credit and transtiion sequences in 1932's "Bird of Paradise". That was the real beginning of film scoring. I love his work and Korngold's equally well, however. I also adore Tiomkin.

  • @keybawd

Korngold is sadly under-rated, idem Rachmaninov, Gershwin, Barber, Tippett, indeed anyone who last century could write a melody. Hands up who can hum a tune from a Peter Maxwell Davis symphony? Hahn is a wonderful violinist. Heifetz is, was and will always be Heifetz. Times change, musical styles change. Kriesler didn't make Menhuin redundant nor Menuhin Heifetz nor Stern Perlmann. We love performers of the past & are excited by the performers of the present.
Hilary Hahn is a great musician

Could almost be from one of his film scores but none the poorer for that, should be heard more often at concerts instead of the ubiquitous Tchaikovsky, Bruch etc. Would like to hear Vadim Repin have a go, probably the finest violinist today, though there is certainly nothing with Hahn's playing.
