I used to sit in drum circles with my mother, we would sing this song to eachother often. It always brought me to tears. I know all the words by heart. I cant sing it because it makes me cry every time. Literally. I dont know how people make it through it without absolutly sobbing. We all honor our heritage in our own ways. Our way is music.

When folk left for America and further afield from Ireland they had a wake because they knew they would not see them again. How heart breaking that must’ve been.
That's unimaginable. Even though so many still never return, it's all the difference in the world knowing they could. That's what I get from the song too, the sense that they know, he's never coming back. Silly sad songs! Making me emotional lol
