Honestly, the main reason I don't _love_ turn based elements is because I don't have full control of the variables. In real time my reflexes allow me to weave through attacks, and heal whenever I get nicked. Meanwhile in turns, enemies just slowly walk up to me and eat away at my bar, while all I can do is hope that my character dodges and the attack isn't a crit if they can't.
Speaking of which, I like the Mario and Luigi series for this exact reason. When I take damage it's either a canon event or entirely my fault. I didn't always feel like the games were rigged, I simply needed to focus and try harder.

It just feels like a lesser system. A skeleton of an idea. Everytime I pick up a turn based game, I just dont get it. I just spam x to attack, I dotn have to think, dont have to react, dont have to do anything. If you think about it they just made the boring version of the real tiem games, but instead of X spamming and moving and dodging, you just x spam to attack.

In my opinion, I never thought that they were "outdated" but rather, the market's perspective on wants has just changed over time. I do think that the "slowness" parts do come from the early days of the NES-SNES/PS1-PS2 era of RPGs which I do agree with, because some are definitely slow. But sometimes when these get re-released, a turbo mode is added so it does mitigate it a little.

Having only played various Final Fantasies, I think a big reason they feel so slow is because the animations take so incredibly long starting around the snes era. In FF1 I can get through an endgame random encounter within less than a minute but Cyan using a single Bushido takes about half a minute already (not to mention the incredibly drawn-out intros in the ps1 era)

  • @Jaycan

Turn based can be fun and interesting look at titles like Sea of Stars, SMT, Persona, and Octopath. The thing all of those games have in common is they have a "Gimmick" about their turn based combat. SMT/Persona with Press Turn make the combat cerebral since making a mistake can end with you out right losing actions during your turn, or you can emerge victorious by taking advantage of weaknesses and critical attacks to stretch your turns and get more actions. Sea of Stars has its timing mechanic where you'll be more effective by timing a button press on various attacks when doing them and by blocking oncoming attacks. Octopath has the Boost system where you have to decide on saving up for a big attack along with the breaking system which is similar to SMT's Press Turn.
All that being said vanilla ass turn based combat can be quite stale and boring by the game's end, but if you have gimmicks that make my choices have more weight than oh baby we're cooking! I love action games, but there are some RPG systems that I think must stick around. in FF16 I missed exploiting enemy weaknesses by casting the correct spell like blizzard on a fire bomb. Along with spells like Haste, regen, protect and shell. I liked playing FF16, but it just had too much missing from it. I say that FF16 has a good Skeleton for the future, but we need muscles and skin added back on to really get the correct feel back!

    • @KatanaRikku

Dude I LOVE this comment. This is so much facts. I should have said it in my video, but I agree. A big part of why I love a lot of modern turn-based RPGs is that they have a unique hook with my favorite being the SMT press turns because of what you said. It’s risky and small mistakes can screw you over, which means you have to be really careful.
When it comes to things like ATB combat, I still find it fun for sure but I just love how these newer games are doing cool things with the formula to make it feel fresh. But even older games like Chrono Cross had its percentage system which I felt was very unique, however that game had the elements that you could only use once per battle, so long fights almost felt like a rush to kill the boss before you run out of options lol.
FF16 was definitely lacking in elemental which was disappointing, among other things. But my mans. You spittin facts 🔥🔥

Agreed 100%. I love Persona’s flashy battles, but SMT edges it out solely because of the press-turn and the fact that you can have an absurd amount of different party member combinations.

People often have this idea of games and game styles always linearly evolving: "a game from 1997 MUST be strictly worse than any game from 2023, right?"
But if you spend even a relatively small amount of time in the hobby, you'll find that yes, while games do age, a game's chosen genre can be as new as 2010 or as old as 1970 (considering D&D) and still be made to be fun or engaging. People expect more nowadays, but often underestimate how fantastic an "old" game can be when well executed.
As someone with turn based RPGs as my favourite genre, I find this perception more amusing than anything. Being presented with a situation, analyzing how to best deal with it with many options and executing it while being rewarded gives me so much joy. It's amazing how much has been done with turn-based RPGs and how they can be so engaging.

I've been playing through all FF games recently even though I haven't started playing video games before 1999. Yet I never felt they were outdated or boring. It has nothing to do with age. It's like with football, there are just people to project their own confidence and importance on stuff from their generation. Which is honestly pointless and stupid. Because they are not representative for an entire generation, least for individuals. People who hate something for being old are just as pathetic to me as old people who hate something because it's new. It's just pride speaking for them.

I've heard a few people mention the depth of strategy and tactics in turn-based RPGs but when I play them I can't really see it. my strategy of spamming the highest-damage attack and healing when a character seems low has worked for as long as I've been able to get myself to continue playing
on top of that, the other abilities are generally very basic and weak, like "decrease attack by 5% for the rest of the fight". I don't know why I would want to do that when I could keep wailing on them with the one ability that makes health bars shrink the fastest
maybe I've just been playing bad turn-based RPGs (mostly Pokemon and CRPGs like Baldur's Gate 3) but I have such a hard time understanding why people enjoy them

I agree with all your points about turned based gameplay/combat. It really does depend on the type of game it is. The examples or games you used in this video are spot on. I think in the gaming space there is room for turned based gameplay/combat. If all games were made the same...gaming would be boring. You need the variance to make it what it is.

I dont get what makes turn based combat so popular, realtime combat is much better. Getting that thrill of action beating a hard group of enemies until to the huge boss is waaaaaay better than the boring static fight animations. Strategy isnt a usp for tbc, you still need to strategically manage stamina, healing, consumables for buffs, find weakspots etc. in a real time combat, plus you need reactions.
If you want to have tbc, go play chess, risk or dnd in real life. It just has to stop in gaming media.. Only acceptable tbc games are where you give commands to your slave companions, like pokemon or dragon quest, it somewhat makes sense there.

@@bernardo879 if a combat system that allows you to bend it to its limits through good choices in level progression and gear choice its a GOOD system, you might not like it but it doesnt mean its bad. in terms of fun it depends on person, personally i have fun in either, but when you say that you'd like it more in real time action rpg style i doubt it. Look at combat of lets say witcher 3 leveling barely changes anything, it never changes its tempo its always quen-> spam attack ->get hit -> quen -> spam attack. You can't expect a studio with tons of experience in turn based combat, to do active combat like elden ring by from software that has experience in doing them for more than 10 years. if you compare depth of from software combat systems to other arpgs they don't even come close.

Different styles of RPG combat can work great. And turn-based is still one of them. There's still fun to be had in planning out your approach, taking your turns, and trying to come out on top. I'm glad that franchises like Persona still do it so very well and Dragon Quest has kept that up also.

Turn-Based RPG is about cinematic attacks where its about how visually sense how good is your attack like short one deal some light to moderate damage while long ones deals a lot of damage. Action RPG is more of a realtime streamline fluid combination of attacks that chains together with another attack and its all about active engaging gameplay.

It is possible to make a modernized turn based game with action elements. And Final Fantasy can certainly succeed in this. But if they still want to remain with action combat, then FF7 Remake/Rebirth combat is the way to go, no where else.

RPGs in general are okay for young players that haven't experienced world building yet. For them, the stories haven't been heard yet, so they are engaging, which keeps all the dialog and turn based combat viable. But you play a few of them and you've played them all. Just like movies, TV shows, and even music. FF7 was one of my favorite games, but I couldn't even make it an hour into the remake. Too slow. Its like waiting for marriage -- maybe you can do it the first time, but you're not waiting after the separation.

This was explained to me, but in 100 years from now we can probably assume that VR has taken over the gaming world. Can you imagine VR having turn based games? I can’t. And I know that’s going to upset a lot of people who feel strongly about that style of gaming, but there’s a sense of realism coming to video games and the turn based gameplay is just not realistic. FF16 combat system is flashy and looks smooth, but obviously needs some polishing to be better. HOWEVER, FF16 was a huge step forward from FF15. I’d like to see the progress for the next installment.

FF16 combat system is basic but exciting to play. The issue for me is that there is NO elemental affinities. I just don’t get it. Elemental weaknesses and strengths was a concept from the first FF, all the way to 15. Why not make ice monsters weak to fire, etc? I don’t get it!! Makes every attack do the same thing, essentially. I mean, some attacks lower the stagger bar more, woopdidoo.
