To protect the sensitive microphone capsule from all these singers exhaling moist vapor, several layers of filtering is used which causes muffling. The alternative to heavy filtering is less filtering and more frequent service and cleaning of the delicate capsule diaphragm. Singers should consider buying their own microphones which they find sounds best for their voice and bring them to gigs. Short of getting a better microphone, apply equalization to what you have, for example with a boost to the presence region of frequencies. Your voice is your instrument so get the most from it.
The first band really needs to work on their stage presence. The singer should talk to the audience while the guitarist is tuning up.
