- This is part two of a three part series on how I scratch build a classic train station in 1/87 (HO) Scale. Some of the supplies needed are listed below.
Evergreen Plastic Sheet of varied thickness:
.020", .030", .040", .060" and .080" Sheet.
Various sizes of Evergreen strip as needed.
All the windows and roofing shingles are from Tichy Train Group & Grant Line.
Plastruct solvent is used for construction and the paint is acrylic of choice.

It is so true, when you get frustrated, it is best to walk away, take a break, and come back to it, and then it seems to work. If not, do another small project, and then come back. My wife asked why I had so much WIP (Work in progress), and it is what it is to get through.
Great masking on the windows, they do look awesome, great job.

Man, you laid down some bars with, "If the hobby was always fun nobody would quit". I might add, to persevere when it's not fun, you have to step away, just like you did.

Boomer, the inclusion of footage of your frustrations from the build are every bit as educational as the your documentation of the build. That made me feel much better about my modeling skills, or lack there of.
It happens to everyone. I have build runs that can go for weeks to utter perfection - and then, the following week it all goes south . . . lol.

I don´t know where you are in your construction, but go see the vidéo from my other comment. Same type of station except for an extension after the baggage section.
Drone view should be really helpful for the roof gabbles, chimney details etc ...

Hey Boomer. I can always count on learning something new and a good laugh. Your statement about if the hobby was always fun, no one would quit, should be something printed on a T shirt😂. As an electrician who worked late nights to finish the jobs, I can attest to the problems making mistakes when over tired. Sometimes, you just have to know when to call it quits no matter the deadline, or you'll just spend the next morning fixing all the mistakes from the night before. I think that's where the trem nightmare came from. Sometimes, things can work out when we're on autopilot because we're experienced, but I don't recommend it for personal use. I really appreciate your simple hands-on techniques you share since I don't have any automated equipment. I'm surprised by the way you approach the roof slopes, It's like what I would do. I was expecting something a little more technical, like a mini speed square or complex mathematical formula. I just wouldn't want to be the one to shingle it. It looks like it's going to be a job for Spider-Man. It's definitely not something shingled during the Canadian winter months.
The shingling was a big part for sure. ;-)
Great tip on the airbrush ( pretending you are holding an egg ) we were forever over spraying or getting tiny globs. And wasting paint too. Thanks

Another great video, thanks for putting this together. I can’t wait to get my scenery done, so I can start to do buildings, I will for sure be using your videos for great reference. Also, on the video productions side, I think people forget how tough it is to get everything to land right and also do voice over live. You got some skills! This build is superb. The styrene scratchbuilding and painting techniques are extremely useful. (those windows really pop) Absolutely great and much of it could even apply to plastic kit building/kitbashing. Can't wait for the next video. Where rooflines and such things are concerned, I find that the descriptive geometry I learned starting back in high school (old school?) drafting is an immense help, eliminating a lot of trial and error.
All the skills help for sure.

Build out of paper first if and when the shape is difficult. ;-)
Howdy Boomer! Seeing what the finished model looks like you think Holy Toledo... I could never do that! But when you break it down into smaller chunks it suddenly doesn't look quite so intimidating. I will have to find some simple buildings to make starting out... and build off those experiences. Can't just jump in with something quite this complex lol! So cool to see how your core techniques can be used/adapted over multiple types of projects. Really well done and thanks for sharing 🤠
I recommend a trackside shanty for starters and then build out from there. ;-)
I know it wasn't easy showing the down side of your project; however, it gives modelers like me an understanding that even the greatest modelers have bumps in the road. Thanks for the look inside!
No one is immune to problems that occur. The more we model the more issues we face. This is why it is good to change subjects in order to experience other issues you would otherwise avoid - why? You gain more experience through new experience, which leads to greater skill and confidence.

Happy sunday Boomer. Too busy now to watch your happy station. I´ll do it later.
But to you and avid followers let me propose that video. At begining a splendid Canadian Northern station like yours fully restored. Later on an interesting modeling idea of a roundhouse with only the brick walls that survived.
At the end, a wood grain elevator being cautiously dismantled with materials saved for future use. Impressive the volume of wood piled all around. Interesting scratchbuilding project without roof and drone showing from the top.

Sometimes we invest a lot of time and efforts to do inside buildings that we can barely see through window. The roofless structure explains a story. How it was and its demise. Think it´s a good subject to ponder. Hope you´ll like it.

Boomer, have you used 100% mat media as adhesive for assembly of painted parts?
I know you do for trees, shrubbery, Ext. so I guess I’m wondering about styrene to styrene.

I list the book to build the station in Part 1. The drawings are in the book and there are also simpler versions of it as well. I don't give my drawings out.😁
