In this video I show how to make a neck blank from a 3"x1"x36" board of quarter sawn mahogany. Make sure to check the plans for whatever guitar you're making for your own measurements as they differ from one guitar to another.

Loving this series so far, keep up the awsome content
Good video. I especially liked how you described the problems with gluing up the scarf joint and your solution.
damn i randomly just found this series and didn't know it was still ongoing haha, i need more, awesome work man! cant wait to see how it turns out
Nice recovery, always good when you miss on the pro side of a cut! Love the series.
Right!? That would have been a complete do-over if it was flip flopped. I love a mistake that's easy to fix. Thanks man!
Nice work again Adam! When I built my Acoustic I used a Dovetail joint to attach the body to the neck. I think that it's better in the long run as it's a very strong joint & also makes for a better sounding guitar. I also used Hide glue for all of my glue ups! If you don't have the wood for the top yet, I would suggest purchasing "Torrified Sitka Spruce" from either Stu Mac or LMII. Using that wood definitely makes for a better sounding instrument as it sounds like a vintage guitar with a lot of age to it. Anyway, just a suggestion as that's what I used for the top of my guitar. Really enjoying your videos................
Sapele Steve thanks steve! How did your dove tail turn out? Did you use that O’Brien jig to cut it? I just got Sitka spruce for my top but I’ll look into that for my next one!
As I recall, I used the plastic set that Stu Mac sells & made the jig that they recommend to go with the templates. Pretty easy to do & IF you pay attention to details, makes for a perfect joint. Yes, for your next one get that Torrified wood. Makes a big difference in the way the guitar plays. Try that Dovetail joint, you won't be sorry.................Happy Building...............Steve
appreciate your honesty...that makes me subscribe like and ...yeah! good build
Thank you sir, exactly what I wanted.
I was watching a woodworking show on PBS, can't remember which one, but the guy let his wood glue get tacky before clamping the pieces together to minimize slippage. He said it also made for a stronger joint. I think I'll try it next time I need to glue and clamp. Nice job on the neck, I have not been brave enough to make my own from scratch...yet.
Yeah I've heard that too - I never have enough patience to actually wait and I'd be afraid I'd wait too long or something. It's a pretty fun process making from scratch (if you have sharp tools):)
Getting closer to caught up on your videos. I would have made the same mistake. Always looking forward to your videos.
Your angle "Duplicator Thing" is called a Bevel Square. Not making fun, just letting you know. A Really Good Info Video. I think I was able to Learn a Few things. Thanks.
You can still add a mortise and tenon .
Great vids! Thank you! May I ask you why most liuthers prefers scarf joint over one piece headstock/neck construction? I mean for angled headstock which method is the best? Does one piece gives more resonance? Thank you!
NEVER cross your arms when using a miter saw! I can't stress that enough. Other than that, I'm loving the process.
thank you
😭 many work this man
i was looking on luthiers and i couldn't find a neck that was one inch thick is 7/8 ok?
Angle duplicator thing....is called a sliding bevel. But, excellent video all the same.
Awesome man! How did you like working with Mohagany?
I never really liked the look of mahogany so I hadn't worked with it much before guitars but I love working it. Super easy to cut and super strong. I def appreciate it more now - still not my favorite looking wood - not sure why...
Why are you not making any videos. I hope you are ok.
Just an FYI it's called a handplane. Not a planer.
Which planer did you use for this? I'm looking for a nice small one.
Vintage Stanley's are my favorite planes
Why angle not square?
love the series.......please please please don't cross your arms while using the chop saw
Are you Canadian or something ?
It’s called a hand plane not a planet. A planet is a machine
It’s a ‘plane’, not a ‘planer’.. a planer is an electrical shop tool
Please don't cross your arms when using a miter saw, ever. I know someone that almost lost an arm that way.
Good call, good reminder! Thanks!
