Age is something we cannot control. Even though I’ve been “in” jiu jitsu since February, COVID has put a wet towel over the face of my progress. I’ll be 47 in 5 months but I still have a minimum of 5 years left in my law enforcement career. Nobody is going to care how old I am if they decide they want to fight. For me, BJJ is a necessity because really when it’s all said and done, my life could depend on whether or not I’m able to control someone effectively. Forget the age, buckle up and take care of business. If you don’t want to, go to monk school! That’s what I tell younger guys in my profession.
Agreed, I wouldn’t want to be in a position like yours without some skills that allow me to restrict and subdue rather than hurt (but hurting is an option)....appreciate your comment and service, brother!
We completely agree. It’s never too late to start especially being law-enforcement and dealing with the things you guys have to deal with on a daily basis. I’m sure it is comforting to know and really know that you have the upper hand!
A Father's Roll absolutely! Any advantage helps especially since all the gear makes moving a difficult thing to to do. My agency adopted self defense tactics more slanted toward BJJ. We have Gracie certified instructors in the training unit too. It was the primary reason I started training on my own dime.
45 years old and started July 29 (2022) with no previous martial arts training. Post torn Achilles and out of shape. Best decision I’ve made. Sleep better, humbles you, great community, muscle tone and list goes on. I just show up when motivation isn’t there. Get in there. You won’t be disappointed. 💪🏾💪🏾😤😤
Thanks for this vid my man, I have been contemplating on starting a new journey as I have a striking background and still am active pass my 40's, I Coach Boxing and Muay Thai and now soon for BJJ with Clinch Academy possibly.
Love this. Just found your channel man, and I’m so glad I did. I’m 45 and one year into BJJ (minus the UK lockdown). Like you, I’m ‘post Krav Maga’ 😁 and was looking for the real deal. I found it in Jiu Jitsu! Thanks for the inspiration and motivation. 🙏 Keep the vids coming brother.
great interview brother... very true as far as being in shape for bjj, i’m not dying during warmups anymore so that’s a win lol but the key is definitely to show up and just do your best, sometimes it’ll be enough for you to consider it a great day and some others you’ll drive back home, no music playing, just wondering what happened 😂😂 anyways, much love brother, keep the videos coming, i’ve really enjoyed and a lot of times related to them!!
Great video, 40 about to be 41 in 2 months…. Start Jiu jitzu next Monday, all I worry about is injury😞 Wonder if I should go to combatives or regular BJJ
'tapped out from being gassed out'...dude, I felt this in my soul (52 yr old bjj guy)
Lol...
It’s an old guy issue. Lol. We have been nicknamed the wheezing geezers in our class.

which one did you go to...and did you enjoy it?
@2:45 - If I am coming across multiple attackers then I think I should be making better life choices.
Agreed my friend....lol...had me laughing out loud at that one...😂😂😂
We completely agree but the things that surprises us are the things we can’t control.
