Zé Ramalho has this deep voice since the begining of his career. His lyrics are very poetic and really really beautiful, mostly about nature in the Northeast of Brazil where he was born.

Chão de giz" do Zé Ramalho é uma música muito, muito profunda e linda e você percebe o sofrimento dele nela. Zé Ramalho compôs "Chão de giz" em 1978 para lidar com um relacionamento frustrado com uma mulher casada e mais velha. Dizem que essa relação durou um bom tempo e que a amada era esposa de um homem influente da sociedade de João Pessoa, cidade em que o cantor viveu durante sua juventude. Não tem como não chorar ouvindo e sabendo interpretar as metáforas que ele utilizou.
Eu coloquei aqui a letra da música com as metáforas para você entender o que ele canta:
"Eu desço dessa solidão, espalho coisas sobre um chão de giz
Há meros devaneios tolos a me torturar"
Nesse primeiro verso fica evidente que o jovem sofre com as lembranças de seu envolvimento com a mulher pela qual ele está apaixonado. Ele se sente angustiado e torturado por não conseguir parar de pensar nela. Na primeira frase está escrito "chão de giz", que é o título da música, que na minha interpretação se refere a um chão instável, frágil.
"Fotografias recortadas em jornais de folhas amiúde"
Já que a mulher amada era casada com um homem da alta sociedade, saíam várias fotos dela nos jornais. E, como se já não bastasse ficar lembrando dela, ele se torturava ao ficar olhando as fotografias inúmeras vezes (é isso que quer dizer amiúde: repetidas vezes). É bem provável que ele sofresse dobrado, pois ela deveria estar acompanhada do marido nas fotos.
"Eu vou te jogar num pano de guardar confetes"
Pano de guardar confetes são balaios ou sacos típicos das costureiras do Nordeste, nos quais elas guardam os retalhos e restos de panos. Aqui, o jovem apaixonado, diante a tanta sofrência, decide jogar as fotos, as lembranças e o sentimento dele no saco para, assim, esquecê-la de vez. Há a repetição da frase para enfatizar a decisão de esquecer.
"Disparo balas de canhão
É inútil, pois existe um grão-vizir"
O garoto tenta convencer a amada a ficar com ele e se dispõe a tentar de tudo para estarem juntos, mas percebe o quão inútil é, pois está disputando o coração dela com um "grão-vizir". A palavra "grão-vizir" faz referência a uma figura da cultura persa que representa algo imponente, da mais alta autoridade e sociedade. O poeta se vê em uma batalha em que tem que disputar o amor da amada, mas sabe que será difícil competir com um esposo influente, poderoso e da alta classe social.
"Há tantas violetas velhas sem um colibri"
Essa metáfora faz referência aos dois: a mulher amada é a "violeta velha", enquanto o cantor é o "colibri", que é um gênero de beija-flor, alguém mais jovem e delicado. Ele revela que há muitas mulheres mais velhas que desejam ter alguém mais novo do que elas, que as desejem e as amem. Entretanto, ela não dá valor para o sentimento e para o desejo do jovem, que quer ficar com ela para viverem um "felizes para sempre".
"Queria usar, quem sabe, uma camisa de força ou de vênus"
Essa frase indica o conflito de sentimentos entre a razão e a emoção. Ele deseja usar uma "camisa de forças" para se afastar dela, para impedi-lo de se entregar a essa paixão enlouquecedora, mas, ao mesmo tempo, deseja usar uma "camisa de vênus", que se refere ao preservativo, ao ato sexual.
"Mas não vou gozar de nós apenas um cigarro
Nem vou lhe beijar gastando assim o meu batom"
A palavra "gozar" nesse contexto significa que o jovem decide não se envolver mais com a mulher, nem emocional e nem, principalmente, fisicamente. Ele percebe que ela não está envolvida tanto quanto ele, porque ela se interessa apenas pelo carnal. A metáfora do tempo de um cigarro significa que ele não quer ficar com a mulher apenas pelo curto espaço de tempo de um gozo, ou seja, pelo tempo de uma tragada.
"Agora pego um caminhão
Na lona vou a nocaute outra vez
Pra sempre fui acorrentado no seu calcanhar"
A partir desse verso, o poeta afirma que irá se afastar, seguir outro caminho. Enfim ele percebeu que estava muito dependente e preso ao que sentia pela amada, enquanto ela não sentia o mesmo. De tanto tentar, em vão, ficar ao lado dela, se vê vencido, sem esperanças e sem forças para lutar pelo amor não correspondido.
"Meus vinte anos de boy, that’s over, baby!
Freud explica"
Aqui há uma referência ao pai da psicanálise, Freud, médico que se dedicou a estudar a fundo a Teoria da Sexualidade e os instintos sexuais, além de vários outros assuntos relacionados a essa temática. A escolha da palavra "boy" remete à puberdade do "colibri", ou seja, dele próprio. A juventude, a descoberta e as irresponsabilidade acabaram e agora ele está mais maduro e consciente de suas escolhas.
"Quanto ao pano dos confetes, já passou meu carnaval
E isso explica porque o sexo é assunto popular"
Essa frase indica que ele já passou pela fase "profana", que visa apenas o carnal e o prazer, guardando esse sentimento também no saco, no passado.

No último verso, o jovem se despede desse amor, que lhe causou tanta dor, a fim de se preservar e de esquecê-la de uma vez por todas.

This song is about his forbidden love affair with an older woman, who was influent in his hometown. The lyrics are deeply metaphoric and sad. He is saying that he is going to leave her, with a broken heart. One of my favorite songs.
Yes it’s sad but at least towards the end it’s like he opened his eyes, realised she was just using him and became aware of his own value.

Alguém tem que legendas os videos BRs do Zé Ramalho , essas poesias cantadas devem ser lidas pelos gringos.
Nem vi o vídeo mas saber que não tem a letra... Zé é storytelling. É tipo se seu vô fosse um deus da música e te contasse essas histórias na varanda jogando baralho num dia de domingo.

He is a legend to some of us here in brazil. Specially in North and Northeast. He is one of the best musician, songwriter, poet and artist alive in Brasil. His lyrics are so amazing and complex to the point that most brazilians don't really understand it. You gotta study portuguese for real, even as a native speaker. I am English and Portuguese teacher, and i still struggle sometimes to understand what he says in his songs. This man is a machine to create lyrics.

Beth, Zé Ramalho's 1978, 1979 and 1981 albums are masterpieces. It's really worth listening to. Voice and music extremely unique, beautiful, kind of "psychedelic".
There's a duet version of that song where he sings with his cousin, Elba Ramalho, another living legend. She is an amazing vocalist. I hope you can find that version because it's just too beautiful to ignore.
