  • Douglas teaches kids stewardship through a story from his life. In this video, Douglas answers the question: "What should I do with my money?"
At Douglas' last birthday he had a party at an arcade with all of his friends and family, even his grandparents came. When it was time for presents his grandparents gave him a fifty dollar bill. This was more money than Douglas had ever seen in his whole life! He quickly decided to spend it on something at the arcade and he found a laser pointer in a crane game that he decided he really wanted. So he turned his fifty dollars into quarters and sat down to win the laser pointer. One hour and fifty dollars later, he still hadn't won the laser pointer! He wasted all his time and money and had nothing to show for it but a bad attitude. This isn't what God wants us to do with our money. There's a word we use in church called "stewardship." What does stewardship mean? A steward is someone who takes care of something that doesn't belong to them. and we are supposed to be good stewards of everything God has given us, including our money. Douglas learns that being a good steward means doing these three things with our money: 1 - Recognize that it's all His. we do this by using our money to make the world a better place, by giving it to the church, mission, or the poor. 2 - Be responsible with our money. Not wasting our money, saving our money, and using our money to make more money are all great ways to be responsible with our money. 3 - God wants us to use our money for our own enjoyment! God gave us what He gave us for us to use, we should give back and save up, but then it's ok to spend a little on ourselves. After the whole birthday party incident Douglas spent a few weeks saving up his allowance until he had ten dollars, he spent that on supplies to make a lemonade stand. he set up his lemonade stand in his neighborhood every day for a week and by the end of the week, he had made twenty-seven dollars. He had his mom look up the laser pointer he wanted online and it only cost fifteen dollars! so he gave three dollars to the church, five dollars to a missionary family he knows, fifteen on the laser pointer, and he even had some left over to spare! When we are good stewards with our money we honor God and also get to enjoy it the way He intended!
