Hey Steve, I have a Laney GH100TI, the matching 4x12 cab, an Epiphone SG G400 Pro, a Nano Big Muff and a Boss GE-7. Although I can get a pretty good sludge tone with this, the Nano Big Muff seems to “suck away” a lot of my tone, leaving it sounding dry and not as full. I tried remedying this with the GE-7, but without much success. Could my Nano Big Muff be broken, or am I using it in the wrong way? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Albert Kotze how are you setting up amp, the muff, and the EQ? Muffs can scoop out a lot of your midrange and cut some of your signal in general as it runs through the passive tonestack. Obviously the GE-7 should be able to help. Let me know.
Fuzz Pedal Demos standing directly in front of Garrett’s rig for an hour and change the other night and I can say that Matamp GT-120 of his sounds incredible, and he was using a 90’s Green Russian Big Muff.
@@DoesItDoom Ah cool. Yeah, there's plenty of demos of it on youtube. But I'd be particularly interested to hear your thoughts and riffs with it since you are the doom lord!
John Danek haha! I do the best I can. My thoughts on the pedal were that it didn’t remind me a whole lot of my Supergroup being boosted with a vintage style Ge based Rangemaster. The pedal had a lot of high end going on and was extremely saturated. Just really didn’t sound or feel the same at all to me. 🤷🏻♂️
Great info and vid! Never noticed the similarity before. Have you compared the 70s v4 LBM to the new Ehx "Op-Amp" reissue? That would be cool to see A/B'd!
I love this. Would you ever do a Celtic Frost/Triptykon tone video? CIRCLE OF TONE's CF video got me part of the way, but I need more to go on. (And not that cringey Glam stuff they tried towards the end of the 80s..I mean Morbid Tales, Monotheist, or anything Triptykon...maybe even the Hellhammer stuff)
@@DoesItDoom Thinking on it, i hope i didnt undermine Owen from COT in my comment. He has helped me quite a bit with his videos and i am grateful. Check him out if you get the chance.
Awesome stuff! I feel like Oranges are the easiest to get a hold of these days, and are priced pretty good. Is there an Orange amp that you think would get me in a similar tonal ballpark as the GT 120? It could even be smaller as I’m just jamming in my room for the most part.
Griffin Biscone that’s a tough one, man. A GT120 is a super loud and fairly clean amp. Much cleaner than my OR120, which is a very similar circuit with a few changes. They don’t sound the same. If you’re looking for that boosted / overdriven GT120 tone at a good price, I’d say look into the Dunwich DA120 Overdrive pedal. It’s an emulation of a boosted GT120 and features the basic block diagram of that amp along with a mid boost. I have a demo video of it from a few weeks ago up on my channel. You can just run the pedal into a fairly clean amp and it does a great job producing that tone.
Here is a link to that demo. Would be perfect for your needs. Dunwich Amps DA120 Overdrive Demo - Boosted Matamp GT120 Tone in a Box ruclips.net/video/QaQx5H7o_74/видео.html
People get WAY to caught up on what pdeals are marketed as, and less on what the pedal actually " does". The rat circuit is not really a fuzz as most fuzzs go. However one of the best qualities the rat has is versatility. And with gain and level cranked and filter set at around half past 3 o'clock; you are in fuzztown. And the eact inverse will give you a good tube screamer boost. And dead center is a great hi gain distortion. Ive never run a rat on a. Large format " studio" board, but i put them on every rehersal/ writing board i have. I actually do prefer the " hyper mod" versions ( again just for versatility), but the role they have always, and will always fill it to mimic other more " one trick pony" gain pedals.
Both pedals sound good but my vote between these two is for the Rat. Rats just have this gnarly rough sounding distortion sound that no other pedals have. Either way both doom so both are still killer
Toki Warbeast for me I like the Muff just slightly more at full volume on the bass setting, but the Rat is overall far more versatile and sounds pretty damn close to the muff at those initial settings. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Just yesterday i finally got around to putting an Lm308N Op amp into my Proco Rat 2 and a socket for quick change outs if i didnt like it( long story short i fucking loved it ). I would have done it sooner but the peanut gallery on the internet kept telling me their wasnt enough difference tonally between the OP07 and LM308 to make it worth the change. They could not have possibly been more wrong. Its night and day. The OP07 was bright, shrill, in your face, neutered low end. Because of that i didnt really get why there was so much love for them. But yesterday my eyes were opened lol. Im dead serious just changing the op amp to and LM308 got rid of that high shrill, thin nonsense and now its nothing but testosterone. It sounds so much better. The poor slew rate of the LM308 really does produce a sludgy distortion with the settings set like in this video (vol, filter dimed, distortion about 3/4). And now it actually sounds good as a light distortion all the way to a full on sludge machine. Everyone says that the OP07 is just as good, im sorry but its just not true(if you want the "Rat" tone its the LM308 period, the OP07 is useable but it doesnt have the style the LM308 does. There is a massive difference. Everything I read about how the Proco rat sounds isnt in line with what the OP07 version sounded like. But with the LM308 it sounds like everyone describes rats. It sounds like what i always expected my Rat to sound like. Im all for using the cheapest components when building pedals as long as they dont effect the tone or performance. And in this case the LM308 Op Amp is very important. If you have a Proco Rat 2 and dont like it or even if you do you really need to put a Lm308 in you pedal. At least just to hear the difference. If you dont like it thats cool, use a socket and youll be able to go right back to the OP07 and then in the future when you come to your senses you can put back the LM308. Damn i could have done this a few years ago but watching youtube videos i couldnt tell much of a difference but in person its absolutely undeniable.
My new, modded Rat cam with the LM308 already installed. It's my first Rat, but it's core seems rather bright and crispy to begin with. I will quick test the stock chip just to hear for myself, but I defiantly don't want it any sharper than the LM308 already sounds. "the peanut gallery on the internet" That's funny. Yeah, a lot of people, even meatheads, don't seem to really be that attuned to sensitive tone and timbre differences.
matthew ferrara little bit here and there over the years. Just rough demos and whatnot, nothing worth sharing in terms of a finished product. Been messing around with the idea of writing riffs again here over the past few weeks, probably because I’ve had a bunch of requests to do a lesson on it. Having fun with it though as it’s been a while.
It’s another tough call. Personally, I think the tone/filter potentiometer would end up being a lot more versatile than the switch. Around 4 minutes, the muff seems to max out volume around 10:30/11 o’clock on the treble setting? Is it supposed to do that?
Larry McDowell I’m not sure, tbh. The treble setting on those things is pretty terrible. Basically whenever I use that pedal it’s max volume on the bass setting, which I think sounds awesome. Rat is more versatile no doubt.
Tengo los dos y he notado, el RAT tiene agudos y el Muff tiene bajos, ambos te destapan. Con unas pequeñas modificaciones en el valor de algunas resistencias adquieren más cualidades.
if you had to only have one, id say the rat. its just more versatile. but the big muff does what it does better than any other out there.i prefer the big 70s 3 knob muff above all others and for that matter the turbo rat with the toggle switch . but the rat has a firm hold on its real estate on my pedalboard.bot work great on guitar ,bass, and baritone/ lower tunings.either one will get you through any high gain situation. but the rat has its own unique tone and with some filter knob fiddling can be used for blues(under 9 o'clock)and classic rock (between 9 and noon) thrash/80s metal(noon to 3 ) and all out grind (dimed gain knob) and everything in between. while the big muff can fit into most of these spots but it is always gonna sound like a muff.
@@DoesItDoom seriously - you should do a stacked gain video with a bunch of different pedals - i really prefer the sounds i get doing that to almost any individual dirt pedal. also the mxr blue box into a distortion + may pleasantly surprise you.
Have you made a video "Emulating the Sunn o))) Life Pedal and pedals to use ? Like that's never been done right ? Cool Video BTW. I have subscribed and liked and yes, Tony Iommi is my friend. Stay Down, T-
Heya, I recently got hold of that exact little big muff, and this is the only video I’ve seen on it. My one has an issue where the muff sound leaks through when the pedal is off, giving a dry signal with background muff sound, anyone else got this issue? No other pedal ever seemed to have this problem. If the volume is maxed out it even feedbacks in the background while the guitar is clean.
Billy Hendry unfortunately that is the nature of the bypass on these things. Mine does the same thing. That is why I used the Boss LS-2 for this video, because it takes the inactive pedal out of the signal chain entirely. Here is a video by Fuzzlord Effects where he discusses it: ruclips.net/video/tJJga0-Tpzk/видео.html
I just got the same pedal and had the same problem. I added a true bypass switch to the circuit. There are resources online to show you how to wire it up.
Does It Doom? Thank you so much, at least I know it’s not damage, and it might even be a fun feature if used right, especially since I’m not keen on modifying something that’s older than myself. Subbed and liked, thanks again for the help!
I own both pedals (well, an OP Amp BIg Muff, but not this awesome one in the vid), and I know I don't need both on my board, but I'll be damned if I'll take either off.
Brandon Davis I had a PPIVMV installed in one of the speaker output jacks on my ‘69 Supergroup. It made the amp much more useable for me on a day to day basis.
The standard, modern Rat is actually very affordable. I just got a new, heavily modded Rat with a much higher cost, but extremely versatile. Mine has an added mid boost or bass boost pot which really works great with bass guitar. As far as this demo, for the stock core sound, I thought that classic Muff had that extra low-mid bump that made it sweeter. Of those two I'd take the EHX. That's a very cool piece.
@@DoesItDoom ahh. I got hung up on you saying it was the op amp when you were actually refering specifically to the LM308. Great video by the way! I've had a rat on my board for years, it was on of my first pedals.

I think that's about what I hear as well. Just a little more clarity in the Rat...
I play bass guitar and i really like the rat sound on my passive P bass. It Seems like i like rat on guitar too.Really nice video m8. Please try to Doom with Boss ODB-3 Bass overdrive on guitar next !
Memphis Bones thanks for checking it out, man. I will add that pedal to my list.
@@DoesItDoom Thank you for your reply bro, it's a pedal used by Buzz Osborne of Melvins. Its a really high gain and fuzzy unit with actually pretty good eq and blend options.I bet you ll really like it : )
Hey Steve, I have a Laney GH100TI, the matching 4x12 cab, an Epiphone SG G400 Pro, a Nano Big Muff and a Boss GE-7.
Let me know.
lots of dirt pedals kill your low end. i'm a big fan of the dungeon master and the behringer copy of the old boss hyper fuzz for not doing that.
Both sound great, but I think I prefer the Rat. Windhand always has insane tone regardless.
Fuzz Pedal Demos standing directly in front of Garrett’s rig for an hour and change the other night and I can say that Matamp GT-120 of his sounds incredible, and he was using a 90’s Green Russian Big Muff.
What happened if you boost the Rat with Big Muff?
What happens if you boots the big Muff with the rat pedal?
Sounds good both ways.
@@DoesItDoom Really? Do a video of this if you can!!
Thanjs 👍👍
Surprisingly similar sounding!
Yes. Both great! Thanks for watching!
Big fan of this channel! Any chance you'll do the Catalinbread Sabbra Cadabra?
Maybe at some point. I had that pedal a few years ago, but don't have it anymore, so I don't have one at my disposal to demo.
@@DoesItDoom ahh ok, good to know! If i ever see it in a store, I may try it but probably not gonna go out of my way. Thanks!
Great info and vid! Never noticed the similarity before. Have you compared the 70s v4 LBM to the new Ehx "Op-Amp" reissue? That would be cool to see A/B'd!
MackTheKnifeSlowly great idea man. Going to try to do that one!
If it had enough interest and requests, yes!

For bedroom playing OR15 hands down. Based on the 120 circuit just scaled down. I have one, it sounds fantastic and is surprisingly LOUD
Is that in front your amp, or is it going through the effects loop?
Russian Bot in front of the amp. I’m using the LS-2 to keep the inactive pedal out of the chain, as the old 70’s LBM bypass is horrible.
mmmm that muff sounds so good
I think Lori from Acid King also used/uses the Little Muff.
louderthangod yep!
Muff with highpass filter sounds almost like hm2
Abe Matt I sort of thought that as well.
im running a Foxx Tone Machine copy by Joyo. Barely on with distortion over it it does this HM2 growl very well.
That’s a very cool way to test and hear the differences directly!!!
@@DoesItDoom It really was, I'm shocked how different they are. Btw love the channel!
Michael Inglis thanks for watching!!
How's the bypass of the Little Big muff?
Shit.
Have you written/recorded your own tracks? I didn’t dabble into the channel enough to discover if any.
matthew ferrara little bit here and there over the years. Just rough demos and whatnot, nothing worth sharing in terms of a finished product. Been messing around with the idea of writing riffs again here over the past few weeks, probably because I’ve had a bunch of requests to do a lesson on it. Having fun with it though as it’s been a while.
Great vídeo!
Thanks, Luis!
I have a Zoom G1X Four processor and I really want to emulate this sound. any advice?
A rat with every control on ten is the heaviest sound in the world.
Like a ten ton violin.
A great sound indeed!
Tengo los dos y he notado, el RAT tiene agudos y el Muff tiene bajos, ambos te destapan. Con unas pequeñas modificaciones en el valor de algunas resistencias adquieren más cualidades.
Would be awesome to finally see/hear some attempts at Warhorse tone... Or Celtic Frost/Triptykon
Patrik Thorfinn some Celtic Frost would be fun. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
if you had to only have one, id say the rat. its just more versatile. but the big muff does what it does better than any other out there.i prefer the big 70s 3 knob muff above all others and for that matter the turbo rat with the toggle switch . but the rat has a firm hold on its real estate on my pedalboard.bot work great on guitar ,bass, and baritone/ lower tunings.either one will get you through any high gain situation. but the rat has its own unique tone and with some filter knob fiddling can be used for blues(under 9 o'clock)and classic rock (between 9 and noon) thrash/80s metal(noon to 3 ) and all out grind (dimed gain knob) and everything in between. while the big muff can fit into most of these spots but it is always gonna sound like a muff.
How different is that Rat than one you could buy new today?
Pretty sure "Bass Boost" mode on the Bass Big Muff Pi will achieve the same sound as the Little Big Muff Pi.
mindbodylightsound10 cool!
but what do they sound like stacked?
Sounds like another good video.
@@DoesItDoom seriously - you should do a stacked gain video with a bunch of different pedals - i really prefer the sounds i get doing that to almost any individual dirt pedal. also the mxr blue box into a distortion + may pleasantly surprise you.
what we do in the shadows definitely plan on it!!
Does it Work With newer Rat 2 Versions?
Which windhand song is this ?
Cassock
I think the Rat is the best way to get heavy fuzz on a budget.
It’s certainly a good way!
Milias Adelphos the Big Muff is another way to do it, just crank that shit up to 10 and let it rattle your internals out.
The channel for everything yep!
Both sound great but I lean towards the Rat.
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Have you made a video "Emulating the Sunn o))) Life Pedal and pedals to use ? Like that's never been done right ? Cool Video BTW. I have subscribed and liked and yes, Tony Iommi is my friend. Stay Down, T-
Made a post about it a few weeks back and the idea has been on my mind. Might do it here in the next few weeks.
Iron Mike S. Brampton's Greatest Athlete nice! I have read about that mod as well. Cool to hear it works!
Does It Doom? Thank you so much, at least I know it’s not damage, and it might even be a fun feature if used right, especially since I’m not keen on modifying something that’s older than myself. Subbed and liked, thanks again for the help!
Billy Hendry no problem, man. I appreciate the sub. That’s my take on it as well in terms of not modding it. Figure it just is what it is.
I own both pedals (well, an OP Amp BIg Muff, but not this awesome one in the vid), and I know I don't need both on my board, but I'll be damned if I'll take either off.
Agreed!
What an op-amp?
An Operational Amplifier. It is a high gain voltage amplifying chip used in the pedals.
Isn't it true the Rat was used by Vernon Reid on Living Colors debut?
Sorry, no idea.
Have you heard about the new Laney
Brandon Davis the master volume Supergroup? LA100SM?
Does It Doom? Yep
Brandon Davis I had a PPIVMV installed in one of the speaker output jacks on my ‘69 Supergroup. It made the amp much more useable for me on a day to day basis.
Does it Doom! Do you like Candlemass?? I do haha
I do. 🤘🏻🐐⚰️
Can you do some Goatsnake related videos?
geitenkaasje1 perhaps! hit me up with some specifics of what you’d like to see!
@@DoesItDoom I'd like to know how they get such a massive sound with so much punch out of one guitar
The mooer black secret is a good and cheap alternative to the proco rat
👍🏻👍🏻
The standard, modern Rat is actually very affordable. I just got a new, heavily modded Rat with a much higher cost, but extremely versatile. Mine has an added mid boost or bass boost pot which really works great with bass guitar.
As far as this demo, for the stock core sound, I thought that classic Muff had that extra low-mid bump that made it sweeter. Of those two I'd take the EHX. That's a very cool piece.
Just ordered a rat. I have a big Muff pi....looking for more meat
Nice! 🐀🐀🐀
Now thaaats sludge

I was the 420th view....coincidence......yes great video like always and very helpful
Dreads 1313 thanks man. Appreciate you checking it out!!!
I just bought a new RAT off ebay, it doesn't sound anything like yours. Mine was like $100, did get the wrong one

Wan Martins nice! Hail! 🤘🏻🐐🙌🏻👨🏻
Lol arent all Rats opamp circuits? 0:27
Yes but they have used various op-amps. The LM308 being the most classic / desirable.
@@DoesItDoom ahh. I got hung up on you saying it was the op amp when you were actually refering specifically to the LM308. Great video by the way! I've had a rat on my board for years, it was on of my first pedals.
Michael Inglis such a classic distortion. One of the very best imo.

Yes.
Hmmm. The rat can sountd waaay better than that volume on max on the rat just overclips the amp distortion maxed out volume not so much
