    Here’s a few of my thoughts...If you pack snow around the sap barrels the sap won’t freeze solid and it keeps cool when it gets warm. I bury my storage barrels in a snow bank up to the lid and just pump to a single head tank. Use ceramic blanket insulation behind either fire bricks or the durock, insulates so welll you can hold your hand on the side of the evaporator running full chat. Also wire in a switch to the blower to just flip it off to load wood. Making syrup is a great hobby and endless projects!!

    I went looking for a file cabinet and clay bricks when you did you first videos. Never did round up the cabinet or the bricks! What I did find in the scrap metal of the dump was a 1920's fridge. That evaporator is on it's third season, with many improvements along the way. This year I too have a Sugar Shack! I did the first boil last weekend and the rate was a bit slow with no sides on the shack. This weekend's boil will feature new lattice sides to it! Sugar Shack has been a dream since I started tapping 5 years ago!

      coyotekylie how about using an old oil tank. The portion youcut out supplies the metal needed to build the rest. Old oil tank has a2 inch bung hole at the bottom for attaching a blower if you choose.

    Nice set up. Best prevention will be when he gets the walls up. We had a large storage tank in the shack so freezing wasn't an issue. Of course I'd hope by now the shack is walled up. Lol

    Run a 4 inch piece of stack pipe from the back to the front under the fire. Put a cap on the front end of the pipe and drill holes along the top so the air blows upwards under the fire. This will cut down on the smoke coming out the door and should make fire hotter. This is called air under fire or AUF as the big guys call it. It works great.

    Some tips to help keep the liquid from freezing.
    #1. Moving water does not freeze. Try letting it drip into something on really cold nights?
    #2. Maybe insulate the pipes by wrapping them with some foam or w/e insulation you have. Zip ties are you friend!

    • @gardenfork
      @gardenfork  6 лет назад

    Insulating the pipe will not stop the fluid from freezing. You need a heat source. Like a heat tape.

    When I ran a coal fired boiler to help with the draft the fan called an ID fan was located in the duct work and pulled sit thru the boiler from a spot just before it went in the chimney, works real good until the belt needed changed , it was located about 25 ft off the floor but it’s an idea 💡

    Suggestion for air input. When you open the door the air needs to not be on. Or borrowing from my outdoor wood boiler, input air is on the door. Baffle that down inside the door and it's feeding the bottom side of the fire and not blowing flames at you when the door opens. Your using flexible hide should be fairly pain free and simple.

    What happens when sap freezes? Does the ice force the sugar out before freezing, or does it stay in solution? If it forces the sugar out... then it's just water and you can throw the ice away. You've concentrated your solution for free!

    If you would put fire brick on the inside of the arch and put pan gasket under the pan you could possibly double your efficiency. You are losing so much heat out the sides and all that smoke ect. coming out from under the pan is going directly into your syrup.

    Moving water does not freeze easily. Install a bypass and recirculating line with a 12 volt or 110 small pump (think boat bilge pump). When done, shut off feed to pans and open recirculating valve and contine to flow water out and back into tank. Thats how we keep fire pumps from freezing and how I am installing mine

    man the more i watch how people built wood burner i have to wounder were they get the time and energy to cut hall split the tons of fire wood they waste, as a welder all my life and at the age of 17 i was building great sauna stove w/ and with out hot water tanks, you are wasting so much wood and heat that is just going strait out the stove pipe, and you have the right idea with adding a blower and in the right place, but in the wrong dezine, first to stop wasting wood and all your heat, the fire box needs a by pass, a second burn chamber, and the fan only need to be a little fan,, but with the forced air sent in the back to the right place, you wouldnt burn a 1/3rd of the wood and you will boil faster and hoter, but you are sending all your heat out the pipe, oh and get rid of that pipe damper it dont do nothing but restrict your burn.. and with all that you open the by pass and turn the fan off before opening the door to load, as far as stopping the sap from freezing, simple fix, pick up a fitting to go in the tanks and a small 110 v hot water tank heat eliment or a block heater, or a cellular block heater the little canister that has 2 hose that go to it, from the tank, one hose out of tank from bottom an return above these you can pick up at yard sales for 5 to $10 i done them a thousand times,
