Loved Crowded House and Dame Edna- and loved the impromptu singing of the Hunters and Collectors anthem “Throw your arms around me” - divine. Vale Dame Edna and Paul Hester ❤
Is this the definition of what television at its best can be? A host who knows when to sit back and let her ‘talent’ display just that. Especially love that we get to see Crowded House setting up before each song. Bring back LIVE tv!
I love Edna's face when Crowded House sing to her! Dame Edna's a barrel of laughs and Crowded House are one of those few bands/artists that have a place in my heart. I always feel nostalgic when I hear their music, they're sort of magic/timeless and I'm stoked that they're kiwis and aussies
As an Aussie of a certain age (61), this brought back great memories of live shows from long ago. Crowded House had us dancing, Dame Edna had us laughing. And all made Aussies proud. Though a few from Crowded House were Kiwis, we adopted them as our own, but Paul and Dame Edna were from my hometown of Melbourne, Edna (but not Barry) from the suburb of Moonee Ponds where as a kid I was dragged through shops by Mum and Dad and where, for a few years in my 40s, I worked at Murdoch’s Foxtel. Barry Humphries, Paul Hester and my parents (and Joan) were all still alive then, now all gone. I don’t know what my folks thought of the Crowdies but they loved Dame Edna. We went to many of Humphries’ live shows. More memories, tears of laughter replaced by tears of sorrow. Well, still some laughs. Thanks for uploading this it was very nice of you, as it was of acerbic Edna not to ask Joan why her band played the British “Land of Hope and Glory” as she entered. “Advance Australia Fair” (or even “Down Under”) would’ve been more appropriate! RIP Barry, Hessie. Joan and Avril & Arthur (my mum and dad)❤
I really loved this. Crowded House were such a talented group. Neil Finn has been putting out such incredible songs and albums since. This is a wonderful capture of them in their beginning as a group. Loved it!
The two best comedians I’ve seen live were Barry Humphries and Dave Allen Crowded House live at Bumpershoot in Seattle in ‘91 among my favourite live gigs. So I’m happy here.
How outstanding was the second song!! And the boys cracking up at how far Edna's quips go over the local's heads. And the inappropriate (for Aussie sensibilities) ad at the end of the first set for Sinus tablets instead of congratulating the great firsts!!and the word "Cocaine" being mentioned as a cure for blocked sinuses!
I saw the last live show CH did before they left Australia to tour with Bruce Hornsby and the range. It was the Najee fashion awards at the Sidney Myer music bowl in Melbourne. Nicks mum was in the audience. Neil sang Throw your legs around me. Nicks brother Mark was the lead singer in Hunters and collectors. He wrote the song Throw your arms around me. That was in 87
That harmony was incredible. Best rendition of throw your arms around me I have heard. And a Seymour wasn't the lead. Something so strong was great too, used their hit to warm up. Very impressive.
@@zapkvr good for you. You know you're not the only one that has seen live gigs. My friends and I were regulars at the Espy, Corner Hotel, Punters Club, The Evelyn and others. Seen some pretty good gigs at Festival Hall too. I can only reminisce these days, I don't get out much because of my chronic arthritis, I can barely walk. So have a heart, and never sum someone up on this rather cold medium.
@@zapkvr I watched this video again, by chance. Then I saw your reply once more. You didn't even have the guts to reply. This confirms, for me, how much of an idiot you are. Like it's some sort of competition whilst not addressing, understanding or acknowledging my educated comment based on live music experience, for one. This includes witnessing Hunters and Collectors live.
I was never sure who played the keyboards on their songs, but now I know and feel pretty dumb not "twigging" that it was none other than Eddie Raynor the brilliant Split Enz keyboardist. Just makes me love the band even more, Eddie was a bit of a genius and his playing here is great.
Eddie played Keys for them the first 2 or 3 years, live. Mitchell Froom played on the first 2 records. Tim Finn and Rayner played on Woodface. They then hired Mark Hart.
In 1988 they had Mike Gubb playing the keyboards during their Temple of Low Men tour in Europe. Saw them at the Paradiso, Amsterdam July 21, 1988. More info on their members at Wikipedia.
I used to have a crush on him back in 1987 and some of 1988 until I found out he was married. I was a kid at the tell me when I liked him. He did not age well.
Wait, weren't they on the show another time when it was Joan's birthday? I seem to remember them singing a birthday song for her - like this, in the interview chairs with a guitar. And I also recall Joan being genuinely moved by it...
No they're not. They had a couple of farewell gigs and disappeared. Neil went back to NZ to write his and record his own stuff. Don't be sad it is over, just be glad it happened. I saw Crowded house very first show ever. It was in Melbourne. It was just after Neil's brother has left Split Enz
They were touring this summer in the UK and Europe, only two original members, three if you count Mitchell Froom, but both Neil's sons made up the difference. And they were great!
YES they ARE still touring and recording new material and they sound fantastic! The current lineup is Neil Finn & Nick Seymour who were original CH members, Mitchell Froom on keyboards (he produced and played on some of their early albums), plus Neil's sons Liam & Elroy.
Saw Neil With Crowded House When They Toured In Australia And He Well And Truly Held His Own. He Even Sang A Splitz Enz Song And A Crowded House Song On Stage With Fleetwood. Was An Awesome Concert.
In so many videos, so many concerts, there is Eddie Rayner. I swear I saw him up the back in at least 90% of Crowded House appearances I went to back in the day, and virtually every recording of concerts, appearances, etc. Was he virtually part of the band while...not being part of the band?
I knew Eddie at the time and he was asked to be a part of the band full time but after Split Enz he didnt want a full commitment but would be there for recording and gigs when he could.
He sure is, he did some incredible work with Split Enz and obviously with these guys, lets face it, Crowded House is a streamlined Enz, especially when Tim played as well.
Crowed House and Dame Edna on Joan Rivers what a treat!
Crowded House singing to Dame Edna, gotta admit this show was overflowing with raw unmatched talent
just wrote a 1984 hit by Hunters & Collectors 🤣
RIP! Barry Humphries and Paul Hester 😔😢
And Joan ❤
Absolutely. Paul was a boy from Melb, as was Dame Edna. Vale both ❤
Just stumbled across this today. Absolutely brilliant, brought a smile to my face
Loved Crowded House and Dame Edna- and loved the impromptu singing of the Hunters and Collectors anthem “Throw your arms around me” - divine.
Vale Dame Edna and Paul Hester ❤
Wow, crowded house! A band that should have been more famous. So much talent
Crowded House and Dame Edna together? Awesome!
Is this the definition of what television at its best can be? A host who knows when to sit back and let her ‘talent’ display just that. Especially love that we get to see Crowded House setting up before each song. Bring back LIVE tv!
Dame Edna on top form as ever, and Joan (knowing her well) knows exactly how to riff and bounce off her. - a brilliant rapport!
Such wonderful old innocent times.
Down Under's two greatest exports!
God knows how one stumbled across this, 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 simply outstanding, love throw your arms around me ❤️❤️❤️❤️
A great 22 minutes spent!! A lot of talent on that stage.

Yeah it brings me back too. I can't help but reminisce about happier times, such a bright sound.
1987 was a good year for music
What a treasure this is!! Thank you so much!! The highlight for me was the harmony of voices singing 'throw your arms around me' - excellence.
What a proud decade for Australians that was
Neil Finn is from New Zealand. 🇳🇿
@@purplebrit I know, but we claim them too. Don't be selfish
@@GoodMrDawes Neil and Tim Finn are musical geniuses.

Rest In Peace Barry Humphries aka Dame Edna
RIP Legend Dame Edna❤ Paul Hester
I second that, I live close by, Paul Hestor's laneway in Elwood off Glenhuntly Rd. I think of Crowded House every time I drive by.
So good to hear Joan Rivers laugh again :)
LOVE, LOVE The Dame,,,, Edna Everage.
Those guys are super talented... Awesome sound.
(Rest in well deserved Peace, Miss Rivers.)

Oh, how we miss Joan!
Three brilliant Melbourne icons.........Dame Edna, Crowded House & Hunters and Collectors. Grouse!
Dame Edna gave Lady GAGA her start! omg... look at her clothes! Love Dame Edna
This is a classic interview. Great band, Dame Edna...man, what more could you ask for?!

I was only 7 yrs of age wow but remember it like yesterday ❤ wow how Dame edna missed hugging Neil #sillybilly
Poor Joan stumbled her way thought it.. hard with such talent in the room...

Wow - first time I heard C.H. doing harmony like that without the band - fantastic
One of my favorite LPs
Thanks for sharing this jem! Wow to be back in those days...great times 👍👍
Never heard Nick whistling. So clean.
When Tim was in the band, I'm sure he and Nick would have to fight over whistling duties.
Another awesome oldie of Dame Edna!
Hands up who else had a crush on Neil Finn since 1980?
🙋🏻♀️ Since 1988 for me😁
He had rotten teath
Nope, not me. But as a young bloke I loved Split Enz, and Neil was amazing.
Nope.

Brilliant!
Goodness. I'm not even done with the video yet, and I'm having instrument envy. Nick's red Spector. Neil's goldtop. *sigh* Lovely find.
Loved Crowded House and the days of uncomplicated comedy.
Awwwww, Neil didn't get a hug 😟
Amazing to see Rivers nervous.
Wow, how cool was that. Brilliant !!
The cockatoo on the right is alive. It blinks.
OMG it's so Funny to hear the Gags the Yanks don't get....Hilarious
Ah Joan and dame Edna rip
RIP, Barry!
That was sexy when the boys sang to Dame Edna
That song was written by Seymour's brother in his own group.
Another chartbuster...😂 The shade
3 comedians and dame Edna.
Great television
This wonderful show gives the impression that it was held together with safety pins and duct tape 🌻
Just!
That’s why it’s so great. Raw talent holds it together.
Before Bjork wrapped herself in a swan.
Oh Neil didn't get a hug from Dame Edna...............that's coz he's a kiwi and the two were aussies...........lol
Most of the jokes went right over their heads. 😂😂😂
Poor Neil missed out on his hug with Dame Edna ☹
That was sad!
She talked about her long time gynocologist, she said he goes way back.

Hunters and collectors the last song, right? Joan was a good looking woman too.
Eddie Rayner helping out on keys again! :)
I've never heard of Crowded House. Are they still around. Dame Edna is in a class all her own
No they're not. They had a couple of farewell gigs and disappeared. Neil went back to NZ to write his and record his own stuff. Don't be sad it is over, just be glad it happened. I saw Crowded house very first show ever. It was in Melbourne. It was just after Neil's brother has left Split Enz

Dame Edna was somewhat attractive when she was younger.
That cockatoo dress!
