- Finally time to getting around to putting back together my 1994 Harley Davidson Evo motor by ditching the stock Harley Evo INA inner cam bearing; replacing the Harley Davidson lifters; and resetting the adjustable pushrods on the is old Harley engine.

In order to stay reasonably informed by listening to and watching the news with all of its horror - both domestically as well as overseas - it’s such a nice respite to be able to flee to a channel such as yours to find sanctuary from the madness. And through that, although it may seem contradictory, we can again transport ourselves back into the world we knew back in time, many years ago. A world, although far from perfect, we seemed to understand better, and one which seemed to understand us. And through this, we keep the flame alive; our love for these machines and their mechanical presence, which we crave and need almost as much as life itself. Absolutely lovely!

I don't know if it would work for removing that particular bearing, but I learned a really cool trick to remove another small bearing in a tight, blind hole... a pilot bearing for a standard shift hot rod crankshaft. You find something really close to the ID of the bearing, like an extension or a wooden dowel. Pack the cavity inside the bearing and the little space behind it with wheel bearing grease and tap the close fitting dowel or rod or whatever fits pretty close, and as you drive it in, it tries to compress the grease, which it can't do, so it just pushes the bearing right out, as slick as anything. The first time I saw my dad do that back in the day, I thought he was pulling some kind of trick on me. Years later, when changing the 4 speed out for a Tremec 5 speed in my old 68 Rally Sport Camaro, I needed a different sized pilot bearing and remembered Pop's old "trick" and whudda-ya-know! It worked for me, too! Purdy kewl tricks those old timers had! The real tool works as well, I see! :) Take care, Tramp
Hey Tramp, The cam bearing removal/install tool is the way to go. Nothing like having the correct tools to make the job go smooth. A friend and I did a S&S 95" upgrade to his 04 88" Wide Glide years ago . We finished the change up onone full Sat and was riding it by the end of the day. Great video. My 94 is identical to yours and I bought it new in 94. At 2K I had the bearing replaced along with a Andrews 27 cam installed. It has 50K now and no problems. I like your videos, so keep up the good work.

When we talked cams at the Fallen Angels camp out you were going to put the EV13 in the dresser which I agree with. The EV27 would be nice in the lighter heritage but since you decided to put the stock one back in it's a mut point. However, if you were worried about the gear differences, as long as your old cam gear is in good shape you can have a shop press the original gear off and swap it onto the new cam. Then you know it's not going to make noise. I switched cams several times on my FLHS and always used the same gear. There's a keyway on the cam but no key. You have to mark the cam at the keyway so you can maintain your timing. Maybe this will be helpful when you do the dresser. Another thing is the Torrington style bearing goes in one way because the side with the lettering is flat and thick which will take the pressure of installation. The other side is rounded and thin and could flatten out during assembly and ruin the bearing. Take care Amigo! Love the new garage!
The heritage actually has one bigger than the 27. When I pulled everything apart, I found that it had an EVL 3020 cam.

That cam gear drive is a thing of beauty. I have 2 TC88 bikes with spring loaded cam chain tensioners. HD really banged their head on that design. Great video.
Gear drive is the solution to that design error. Of coarse it wasnt Harleys fault that error happened, just like with the INA bearings..

I did mine on my 99 FXSTC at 23,000 miles just for peace of mind. I used Harley adjustable push rods and have 63,000 on it now with no problems. I had it all done in one day until I went to slide the pushrod covers in place and noticed the cork gaskets and shims laying on the floor. Bummers. Finished it up the next morning. Having that set of tools makes it a piece of cake to do.
A friend of mine had that bearing fail and it needed a complete tear down to clean out the bearing pieces. Needed a bore job and all new bearings, Pistons and rods. Total rebuild. He traded it as is for a new bike. I don't think he got much for it in that condition. He never said. I did not ask.

Yes, the right tool makes all the difference. There's a guy on YT that pulled the INA with an internal jaw type puller from HF. It worked BUT the mere thought of that cage breaking and those needle bearings dropping into the bottom end didnt appeal to me much, so I bought the JIMS tool. Pacific Mike recently did a full EVO rebuild series. Good stuff. Enjoy your trip!

Going to see if my 93 Heritage has been changed. It has adjustable pushrods and new Jim’s Hydrosolid lifters and I’m hoping ever who replaced the lifters maybe changed that INA bearing also. Thanks for the video. I saved it to use when I do mine. Makes it so much easier. Always learn from your videos.

One of the first thing I did to my current Evo was swap to a Torrington cam bearing, EV27 cam, lifters and Quickee pushrods.

Good vid Corey. I did a cams change and gear drive on my 05 twin cam Fatboy recently. I also replaced the cam plate and oil pump with all S&S components. The S&S oil pump put the oil pressure at 30lbs at idle even when hot. Harley was still using those crappy bearings in 05 and of coarse I had two of them to change. Exact same procedure though. Some people say to put lifters in if they tear it down and has 30,000 miles. My 95 went 57,000 miles on an Andrews 27 cam before a lifter failed. Luckily it was idling in the driveway. Went back with fueling lifters and also took the plastic breather out and used an S&S Reed breather.

I still can't believe that you say you are not a mechanic. Great video. I just had a roller lifter seize and damage the cam in my Ultima motor on my 87 FLHS, so it cost me a lot of money to fix. That's because I am not a mechanic like you.

I plan this upgrade as soon as I get my replacement FXRS, it's a 1996 all factory, never opened up, no leaks at the base gaskets or anywhere else for that matter, just a pristine 1996 time capsule, and I intend on keeping it that way exept for a mild cam upgrade, new lifters, and new cam bearing plus chest gasket of course.

I agree on the plastic breather better it than a motor e rebuild. I had a hard time coming to terms with that my view is metal is always better than plastic except sometimes I guess. My Evo has 32K on it I plan to do the bearing and lifters soon.

Why did HD do that (cheaper bearing)? They wear out/fail. Then you purchase new bearings, gasket, oil, etc. HD= Hundreds of Dollars $$$. Your shout out to other You Tuber channels is great. Roll on!

When adjusting push rods,use clothes pins to hold up push rod tubes,been using this method for many many years.Try it next time,no need for bunji cord hooks.Stay safe.
Works just as well. Especially when I don't have any clothes pins.

I plan on doing this to my 98 softail this winter I’ve had the bearing since right after I bought the bike, I to going to stay with the plastic breather I thought of going with a different cam , and the reed valve breather. But just don’t have the money I bought the gaskets and I have the bearing and that’s gonna have to work
