I loved this movie as a kid but now that I think about it I could NOT be Joanne. Even if Walter changed his mind and decided not to turn her into a whole ass robot he STILL thought about it and was all on board to do it until the very moment of her talking him out of it. He saw what this did to all the other wives and listened to Joanne's concerns about the town, gaslight her into thinking SHE was the one overreacting and ruining their marriage by not conforming until that moment. I'd be grateful for his changing his mind but I also would be getting a swift divorce afterwards. I wouldn't be able to trust him again especially since things are never smooth sailing in a marriage. What would happen the next time they hit a low patch?
Good, that's how it should have been.
But it's an old movie where if a woman doesn't end up with a man it's not actually considered a happy ending, even if she had a wonderful career was smart , beautiful and independent.
It's kind of a regressive theme.
To be fair, after he found out about it if he didn’t they would have murdered him, and Joahnna would have been turned by force and forced to marry another man who had no problems doing it. And if they are smart homes it could be they are being listened to so if he did confirm joahannas suspicions it could lead to him being killed.

But she is a woman! That changes everything! (somehow)
@@yoursafeplace8476 I don't think it's that simple. I mean the reason that they presumed the husband did it was very different from the reason the wife actually did. Think about it. If the man did it then it was simply just him being misogynistic. However the women actually had a sob story to go with why she did it. She wasn't trying to create the "perfect wife" she was trying to create a "cherished woman." She was being a internalized misogyny but her intentions were actually to make the woman happy, making her way more sympathetic. Paired with her sob story and her relatability as her being a successful woman with a crumbling relationship, way easier to sympathize with. Do I think it's stupid that they sympathized with her? Definitely. She was still crazy and made them puppets for their husbands. However it's not as simple as she's a woman so she get sympathy.
@@nutellacelery8830 I mean, it really is that simple. Regardless of why because the why doesn't absolve her of the fucked up things she did. The Stepford Wives is very dark source material. I've always thought it was strange that they tried to make it into a comedy.
dark comedy can sometimes highlight true horrors better than in your face horror does. it invokes the uncanny valley trope powers to unsettle you and make you wonder if you should be laughing at it if it is done right. this movie came close but they added a few too many career comedians to the actor list preventing it from ever tipping over the edge.
i still love this movie though for several personal reasons ^_^ despite its obvious flaws.

Thats incorrect. Final scene shows them being punished by going "Shopping" This makes no sense.
@@damienthompson5808 wtf are you on it is not incorrect on the original they straight up kill the wife and replace them completely with a robot aka dark fate and the end is the robots shopping where as in the newer version they just put chips into the wives and Joanna's husband decided not to go through with it so she fakes and breaks the others free unlike the original were it implies or shows Joanna being killed. He's actually directed two very good movies(that I've seen). Little Shop of Horrors(1986) and What about Bob?(1991)

I love this version because it tackles the internal misogyny that women have also.
R L Stine once said every good story has a beginning, a middle and a twist. 😁
A lot of issues come from this movie due to nosy neighbors. Who cares if someone has a real robot wife unless you have a superiority complex of virtue signalling?
Oh yeah who cares about women being turned into cyborgs. You’re a tool.
@@mmyehokayyy2 no no no no. No. He said, and read carefully now; "who cares if someone has A REAL ROBOT wife unless..."
It wasnt even implied, he wanted to turn woman into cyborgs, not even implied he wanted to turn them into robots.
To have a Doll, most likely made out of synthetic material like Silicon + a robotic skeleton, does not mean you turn Organic Humans into machines.
Did you even read all of his comment?
What tool would he be, according to your clever comment?

@@poploli2660 the woman were robots in the starts
"the lovely stepford wives are cyborgs..."
I think the politically correct term now is "Robot sex doll".
