MOTORs manuals are priceless! most folks these days have never even heard of one, let alone seen one. keep up with the content. we're all chomping at the bit to hear that sweet straight 8 come to life. stay safe and stay healthy!
It will be great to see the old Buick up and running. This was a classic luxury car from the early 50's and it is terrific to see one saved. Great work on the videos when flying by the seat of your pants. Your daughter did a great job.
Whenever I finished overhauling a fuel pump, I would activate the pump lever to make certain that there was a sucking sound. I started doing that after I goofed a rebuild, installed the pump and the engine would not run - no gas.
@@MrSkeltal268 I think I installed one cam driven carb pump in my life, so I never would have thought of pre-testing. I'm one of those guys who got in the business when carb engines were virtually extinct outside of collector or enthusiast cars. Given how crappy many replacement parts are, I do believe testing those pumps is worthwhile.
I saw your base cabinet for the Sunn dianostic center in the background and I remembered we had the same one with all the meters in my dad's garage when i was just a kid learning how to do tuneups about 60 years ago.
Mr. Davin, really enjoy your videos on working on old motors. I get to learn a few things I didn't know of the older ones which were before my time as well and some nice work you do to bring them back to good working order.
Thanks for the update team👍👍 yes I'd love to be kept in the loop about Davin's motor on the stand... cheers for the content during these troublesome times
Davin, I just discovered your youtube videos recently and have been binge watching all of them. I just have to tell you, you are inspiring me to get back out into the garage and work on one of my classics. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Dude!! Rebuildable stuff!! Unheard of today...so unheard of spell check doesn't recognize the word Rebuildable! Gracie is doing a great job. I can't wait to hear that engine!! Living a dream Davin AWESOME!!
Trying to balance working on the old truck, as well as the daily driver newer truck. Wow! That fuel pump is something extra! I'll take my simple little flathead Ford fuel pump for the 49-53 block all day and twice on Sunday. Good to see a new video, and thanks to Gracie for running the camera, otherwise we'd all be missing out!
He might have been able to use a standard fuel pump if he converted to electric wiper blades. More expensive cars had that vacuum pump so that the windshield wipers would not slow down during full throttle acceleration. However, when going for a picture perfect rebuild, having electric wipers and a different fuel pump may have disqualified the car from the event.
Thanks for sharing Davin👍 It is really interesting & informative to watch you doing these old school mechanical parts repair/refurbish, it's getting rare on new vehicles😉 Stay safe Bro❤
As Usual ,Great Job ,Enjoy Your Videos !!! Really I’m Not The Only One ,That The Engine Doesn’t Start On One Revolution,After All These Years It Still Is Totally Amazing To Me ,That They Run At All !!!
Davin, run it! Let’s see that SBC turn fuel into NOISE! Thanks for continuing to work during the quarantine, and to Grace for stepping up and participating. Any semblance of normalcy is welcome, even if it isn’t exactly normal. There’s a ‘69 California GS sitting in my garage, waiting for exhaust to be put on!
Nice video👍Do u think u could kinda explain how everything works and how the mechanisms work whilst everything is apart cause it would be nice to understand the way these old machines worked.
Another Chevy that won't start. Imagine my chagrin. WOAH, KNOCK IT OFF Y'ALL!! Damn... Davin knows I'm just playin' with him. :-) Davin and Tom have the two best shows on Hagerty's network. Love 'em both. -Ed on the Ridge
Those old fuel/vacuum pumps are a PITA to rebuild. I'm working on a 1948 Super Sedanet rustmobile with a 248 straight-eight. The engine is the best thing about this car. It sat in a field for 20 years. Had to chase a family of raccoons out of it before moving it. Took me a month to get rid of the odor.
That's the secret of RUclips success. It doesn't matter what kind of content you do, if you have a cat or a dog make sure they get regular appearances in your videos and the views will roll in :)
DAVE,,, in the video,,, you missed the oil pump gasket. (2:30) Obvious the pump had it on there, otherwise it would lock up. You should have showed that fit. Its important.
Watching to learn all I can. I've done top end stuff but never a full build. I have an 82 350 I was trying to get a rebuild on. Went to 12+ shops ,they all bragged how good they are. They would stand and tell me I need such and such can and lifters ,need to trash the mechanical fuel pump, and stock manifolds ,and the list goes on. When I tell them I want a base stock 350 rebuild ,I'm looked at like I have two heads ,and sorry I can't do that. Then they tell me I'm better off to junk the motor and get a crate motor so I'm going to do it myself. It just has a blown head gasket ,could just do the top. The last time I did that on a 91 dodge 318 spun a main a month later . Figure learn on the 350 before I do the 283 in the 61 four door hard top impala. I've built the four jet twice and still developing very small leaks.
I think that TBI unit is one of those self adjusting bolt on units that replace carbs. I have heard that they don't always synchronize with the distributor signal, even if they say they do. People are sometimes stuck buying a distributor from the maker of the bolt-on TBI unit. Another problem is how slowly that engine is cranking. The starter may be drawing more than the battery can handle, resulting in ,low voltage at the engine computer. Engine computers need a certain number of volts in order to function. No computer function means no gasoline and no spark.
I like comment: davin love work smarter not harder) thanks for the informative instruction to assemble retro vacuum fuel pump. You are the best, keep it up!
Just wondered what the vacuum side was for. I had a 1954 Buick 264 with this pump and I believe it had to do with the vacuum windshield wipers. Buick had cable operated wipers back then.
I am surprised that the oil pump cover screws, and relief valve cover don't have lacing-wire holes to prevent backing off. Since you can't see it without removing the oil pan. I see your furry production manager photo-bombing at the 11:26 time mark, very adorable.
Ya know I do understand the constraints that you are having to work under but as complicated as the fuel/vacuum pump is I would have appreciated a lot more close up action as well as a running commentary as you assembled it. It is, as you commented, a beautiful construct. Wonder what it cost new back in the day?
Great video and a reason why I'm a subscriber to the channel - this kind of "small stuff" is what drives me crazy sometimes! But, yikes, flat head screws? What an annoyance!
Great video as always. Love watching the Hagerty vids. I'm rebuilding a Rolls Royce eagle engine at the moment and today I did the oil pump too! Out of curiosity did you check the clearances between the gears and casing and backlash between gears. I left work thinking I must find out the value for that. Then I saw this and thought if anyone would know, it's you guys!
When does the re-resleeving video get posted Davin? How many other sleeves were found to be cracked when they were removed? What temperature settings were used when chilling the second set of sleeves and heating the block? This is of course assuming Hagerty took notice of just how many people shared the correct technique to use, and insisted the shop re do the sleeves correctly, with all the hammers locked away.
MOTORs manuals are priceless! most folks these days have never even heard of one, let alone seen one. keep up with the content. we're all chomping at the bit to hear that sweet straight 8 come to life. stay safe and stay healthy!
Thanks Davin, it is always fun watching your natural and informative video presentations.

As always, informative and just plain fun to watch. I can't wait to see this straight 8 in an old Buick motoring down the road.
Thanks Davin and Grace great job! Hi kitty 😺 and YES! would love to see your engine fire up! God bless Be Safe!
Whenever I finished overhauling a fuel pump, I would activate the pump lever to make certain that there was a sucking sound. I started doing that after I goofed a rebuild, installed the pump and the engine would not run - no gas.
I’ve bought replacement rebuilt fuel pumps where I didn’t do the check you describe above and same thing - no fuel. Always check!

Skyline Fever I can understand that! Admittedly it was my dad who first showed me, who had worked on carbureted cars his entire life. :)
I saw your base cabinet for the Sunn dianostic center in the background and I remembered we had the same one with all the meters in my dad's garage when i was just a kid learning how to do tuneups about 60 years ago.
Can't wait to see the straight eight full assembly/startup. Nice to see it hasn't been forgotten.
Mr. Davin, really enjoy your videos on working on old motors. I get to learn a few things I didn't know of the older ones which were before my time as well and some nice work you do to bring them back to good working order.
YES WE WANT TO SEE IT RUN!!!!!
They say there's no such thing as a dumb question... Asking if we want to hear it run borders on something! :)

I like watching you work. You make it look so easy but I know better.
She does a WONDERFUL job recording your work! THANKS!
I simply love to watch you work. Fantastic.
Can’t wait to here that straight 8 run !
Thanks for keeping the videos coming during these times.
I wish you a very long life, Davin, so that we will be able to follow you around for many many years to come. You're a great human.
Thanks for sharing Davin👍

This is for a buick straight 8, not a sbc
So sweet how old tech is all rebuildable, it's almost like the engineers were also mechanics
Everything from that time was built to last. Nowadays cars have to be as cheap as possible to produce.
Best show ever. Even in Iso mode! Keep the videos coming!
No plan on stopping!
Nice video👍Do u think u could kinda explain how everything works and how the mechanisms work whilst everything is apart cause it would be nice to understand the way these old machines worked.
As always, good content Davin and great presentation - keep up the good work.
You guys are doing a fine job. We appreciate the videos and the extra effort you are putting into them. Thank you!
Spectacular montage music! I was transported to a late 80s "gaining skills" training montage 🍻🍻🍻
it sounds way way way better at 1.25x speed. seriously
@@heyitsdrew I'm all in 🍻 sweep the leg!!
I fine everything Davin rebuilds is well presented and interesting, always learning something, waiting to see the engine running ))
Thank you for sharing. Yes looking forward to the first fire. 🇨🇦😎
Great job, those old dual vacuum, fuel pumps are tricky rebuild. Done one for my old Holden straight six motor a few years ago
Great job, Grace !!
Nice video, liked the fast action, and in fact, all the camera work by Grace👍. Please video the Chevy when you start it.
Thank you for what you do. I learn a ton from you!
Yes, let's see it run!
All the best to you and your family too Darvin - and it works great with the "wingin'it-things"....
Another Chevy that won't start. Imagine my chagrin.

Impeccable timing.
I have worked in repair shops that cats choose as their territory. It is great because they kill all the rodents and snakes at those repair shops.
Hi kitty!!!
(Insert Forrest Gump wave here )
YES! We wanna see it fire!
Did jim say i just figured out an idea for a fuel pump . Amazing rebuild an amazing fuel pump
Great videos, I always learn. Yes I would like to see the engine running
Definitely want to see that engine fire up. Looking forward to seeing that happening. I'm also looking forward to seeing that Chevy go back together.
Thanks 🙏 I really enjoy you’re videos

You have a very beautiful well equipped garage there so cool 😍 love you man keep up the good work ❤
Great n see you, stay safe 👍
Great show !!!!
Great video Davin,

Good stuff all round!!
Yes, please.
Definitely want to see that big red beauty startup.
I love this man💪💪💪👏👏👏👏
hi davin
i like your work bro
Im following you from other side of planet
you look a good man
Another fine video. Definitely record when you get the engine running!
Always enjoy your videos, informative, educational and entertaining as ever! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻🏆🥇
Isn't old school mechanics more beautiful than modern electronics?
There's NO school like OLD school! 😎🤘🏻✊🏻
My brother has a 51 Buick straight 8 and this is very interesting.
Most important comment: We need to see the engine start!
hell yah i wanna see ya get it running!
i hate it when i'm the only one that puts the distributor 180 degrees off lol ;-)
Definitely want to see that engine startup
New goal in life, build a home garage like that.
I wanna see it run!!!!!!!!
Yeah your right, old cars are the best, now I just got to get my self one
Would love to hear it run!

that fuel pump has more parts than the Antikythera mechanism. can it track the movements of planetary bodies as well as pump fuel.
Awesome work! Looks like a TBI motor on the stand..I do wonder why it don't fire..

Good video work. I like the blue plaid.😁 Yeah, let us in on Chevy start up.

I got a little bit of work to do on my 1968 Pontiac lemans!
The segue tunes sounds like so many forgettable 80's teen movie montage music.... and I love it.
We have to see it start. Some of us may have to have psychiatric help if we don't get to see it start. What a cliffhanger! 🤤

Davin! Have you seen our bath towels?? I can't find them in the linen closet!
loooooved the music
You make it very easy
Enjoy.
Let's see Davin's engine running!
Glad you did not edit out the...no start. Things don't always go just the way you want. Next time. 👍
Great video and a reason why I'm a subscriber to the channel - this kind of "small stuff" is what drives me crazy sometimes! But, yikes, flat head screws? What an annoyance!
I have the same sun machine cabinet that you do but I haven't taken off the stuff on top yet
Nice
Close enough to make me dangerous. Wise words.
I think that fuel pump goes to a turbine engine. What a monster.
Yes, show us the engine start up.
