Blu-ray discs are now showing up very regularly in thrift stores here for a couple dollars or less per movie...great time to have a newer generation Blu-ray player like this on hand as physical media is really something you can own forever unlike anything stored elsewhere in the cloud or protected by some type of content management that ma eventually become unavailable.

I bought a 3700 from eBay. Like new it said. However the remote isn't working with it. The remote does work with the old Sony so it's not that. I can hear the player working, but it doesn't open. The buttons on the player don't work either. The unit comes on when first plugged in and hooked up to the TV (HDMI) it displays the Sony logo, but nothing else. What do I do now?

Ironically, I just bought a Sony BDPS1700 last weekend- the non-wifi model. I got a “refurbished” one from Amazon for about $50. I just wanted to watch “The World At War” documentary from the ‘70s and I can’t find anywhere to stream it anymore, so I bought the Blu-ray box set and a disc player. It all works perfectly. I’m using a VPN and I’m hoping the BBC iPlayer app on this model will let me watch BBC-UK content. I haven’t tried yet. So glad you had cause to open one of these up and talk about them! Thanks, Dave…

We have a similar model Sony Blu-ray player which supports the 4K discs. For some reason, some of the discs tend to hang up and crash the player in between movie chapters, or at very certain parts of the movie recurrently when played from the beginning of the disc, but work perfectly the 2nd time when we start the movie just before the problem section! This mysteriously stopped happening a while ago for us though. Does anyone else have this issue?

    Pretty interesting device.
Had Netflix subscription back in 2012-2013 but haven't had it since. I still have the application installed in my Playstation 3, so got inspired to try it while watching this video. Obviously the app wanted to perform an update first, now it's version 1.23.
At least the app started just fine after update, but don't know how it works when playing movies, as I don't have subscription.
When I had the subsctiption, watched TV series like the original 60's Star Trek, some movies, etc. and I don't recall having any problems. The price went up, and didn't really have time to watch enough Netflix, so that's why I canceled it.
At least PS3 firmware seems to be still getting updates, last one was couple of months ago, and they say the updates are for improving system performance, probably also Blu-Ray disc security keys. Last year PS3 got pretty major update to it's security system, getting the new "device password".
The unit in this video seems to do a lot of things that PS3 and most likely newer Playstation consoles also do, playing various disc formats, media from usb sticks, shuffle play included and video services like Netflix and RUclips using the applications.

Something to try, if you go into the settings and turn off the fast start up, it forces the machine to reboot from scratch every time it is switched off. I have used these sony blu ray players for quite a few years, I own 5 of them, and if the fast startup is left on, the machine will eventually lock up or become buggy. When they have locked up on me, I have unplugged the machine and pressed the power button for a few seconds to discharge any caps, then plugging back in and allowing the machine a couple of minutes to reboot cures the problems.

i just got one of these from Best Buy, and it was completely locked up on the BlueRay screen, no buttons had any effect whatsoever. Sony tried to tell me it was because I took it in from the cold/condensation on the lens. Which is hilarious cuz I didn't even try to put a disc in and it was completely locked. Going to exchange it today, and if it even boots like yours, I suggest checking for a software update before you do anything. Its been out for soo long, surely they came across some glitches.

I bought the S1700 6yrs ago. No wifi. I was already skeptical about the streaming on such a cheap box so didn't want to bother spending extra foe WiFi. Just as suspected, the apps started to fail after a year. But as a Blu-ray, DVD and CD player, it's perfectly decent. And i love the minimalist vibe on the outside and the GUI. HDMI CEC works well enough also. I'm thinking one day I'll do a factory reset just to freshen up the installation and to remove the few apps i was able to install. They're useless.

They (Netflix) are now starting the stopping of password sharing in the UK. I don't use it myself though. I spend enough on 'legacy' formats (DVD, CD and Blu-Ray (etc.) still. (I'm probably in the minority now, but I prefer those). I've noticed a lot of companies now don't seem to allow devices to run other (newer) services for very long before they stop working. At least with 'legacy' formats you can still usually get them to work without any great issues. They may be older and the quality may be less but you can be sure they won't suddenly need an update (to work) or the service will suddenly disappear and your device will be bricked and useless some day. (Obviously belt and other issues will occur someday, but hopefully not often).

Needs the power unplugging a lot. Loses its settings all the time because it can't log into its mummy at Sony (because Sony's servers don't respond, not that there's anything wrong with my network) and then it factory resets itself. The default settings are crap (they show 4:3 DVDs in the wrong aspect ratios on 16:9 TV, audio DRC switched on, etc). Often takes forever to realise there's a disc in the drive, or outright complains there isn't a drive when you can hear that it's focussed on the disc and started doing something internally but doing nothing on screen. Takes an age to resume a movie that you stopped, if it will. Has to be one of the all-time-worst devices!

Normally don’t. Got it at Best Buy during the lockdowns as it was slim pickin’ between the Sony and LG and since the Sony burned out we decided not to go with the same model upon return. It’s still working a few years later so that’s really all that matters. Panasonic has a few new models now but not sure how good they are. Nothing is made good anymore. Before we had the Sony, I had a Toshiba BluRay player that lasted 11 years but it finally bit the dust. The Sony was meant to be the replacement but sadly it was defective. I believe it’s possible that it was a firmware update that fried it because before then it worked fine. Now granted this was three years ago and it could be possible that by now the kinks have been worked out. Some say not.

Not me. Once I have seen a series or movie once I have seen. Don't need the physical disk because i am unlikely to watch it again. I used to record every laserdisk or DVD I rented back in the days when we rented movies. I ripped a copy of every DVD. There was a local video company called "DVDs to your door" (this was before Netflix was even considered) where you paid them 20 bucks a month and made list of movies you want to watch. They would send you three at a time. Once you watched them you mailed them back and they sent another 3. I would rip/copy them and get them back in the mail the next day. Could usually get 6 movies a week this way. Eventually a larger company started up that started doing the same. They were called Netflix. The smaller company couldn't complete with the catalog that Netflix had and they folded. I still have a few disks from them because after they announced that they were closing shop and would not be charging anyone another months membership and that they were going to mail out the last of their disks to subscribers they all came without a return envelope (they paid postage both ways) and a note saying that we were free to keep the disks as the company was done. The 3 DVDs I got to keep were good ones. Days of thunder , 48 hours and Beverly hills cop. No box though just a plastic sleeve with the disk inside and a sticker that said property of DVDstoyourdoor.com

I attribute the behavior to them getting flaky due to running hot. Not so sure about Sony products anymore. With all the Blu-ray DRM nonsense changing constantly I'm sticking with DVD, I'm old and my eyesight ain't the greatest anyway. Besides, if the content isn't good enough from the storyline and the production quality isn't there to begin with all the technological woo-woo won't immerse you in the video anyway. My TV service does not cost much, its the HS internet that's expensive. 100.00 per month for that. My TV and home phone is 60 for both and I get all the premium channels like HBO. Sure there are cheap alternatives, hoever they are reserved for low income earners and you need to prove that you don't make over a certain income level to qualify. Since I work for the company they know exactly what they pay me so no I don't qualify. I also have to have a minimum subscription level in order to qualify for my employee discount. Even with that it costs me about 160 a month BUT I get tons of content. Between my TV package and Netflix I have more than enough to watch. I also get cheap cell phone plan. Those wanting it have to show their Canada child benefit statement showing a family income of under $32,797.
That works out to someone earning 15.75 per hour on a 40 hour work week. In other words minimum wage feeding a family, so basically a single mom working at a fast food joint, because a couple each making minimum wage would put them over that family income level. They do get a good deal though, 25mbits for 10 bucks a month of 50mbits for 20 bucks with no data limits. The rest of us subsidize it.
