Thank you for sharing! Hey, there's a tool that you need to get, and that's a Brayer. It's a rubber roller that will help you apply the glue evenly (without streaks) and will also help by rolling the foil on to the wax paper, reducing creases and bubbles. I hope that helps!
Two tips. When doing a long piece only peel a small amount of the backing off and start putting it down and then pull off the backing as you go along to prevent curling and sticking to itself. When initially smoothing out your foil a micro fiber cloth helps as it will glide more easily over the foil than your hand
This is a cool process. Looks legit! The other system I saw was more for emblems and door handles, but I see this working well for all kinds of things!
BMF comes in gold, black, matte black...etc. As well those you mentioned. Cool technique. I knew you could do this, but never tried. Back by the craft acrylic paints you'll find the metal leaf adhesives.... FYI for anyone wondering.
Thanks Rob, I did not know you can get it in matte black.. Interesting.. Thanks for sharing a location in the store I had a moment trying to think where it was lol..
Thank you for sharing this. I have yet to experiment with the bare metal foil. Every video I have watched everyone has always said absolutely do not use aluminum foil. My thought was that I would try with that first before I went out and bought the bare metal foil, but my dilemma was not knowing what type of adhesive to use. Now I know! Thank you so much
Thanks Chuck for checking it out.. I have mad this years back and had forgot about it, went back to model RR for a bit. I think the aluminum works well, like I mentioned just use the thin stuff. Give it a try, works good.. Have a good one!
I made some...using that same aluminum foil. But cutting bits of aluminum tape...merging them in lacquer thinner to melt its adhesive...(takes a few days to melt into the liquid) The resulting tacky liquid can be diluted and ready to airbrushing the cooking aluminum foil. 😊
Chris how goes it.. Thanks, I had made this years ago and stepped back from model cars for a bit, after my Edsel build I thought I can make better stuff then this stuff and remembered it... Have a good one my friend!
Hey brother! I just tried your tip! That works like a champ! This is so cool ( Thank You) I'm definitely going to use this from now on. I'm definitely loving the diy and saving $
Thanks for this tutorial! I am a big fan of chrome and BMF. Lately though the BMF has had issues with staying stuck, tearing, and wrinkling. I have heard guys saying that they make their own but never explaining how they do it. I'm going to give this a try and see how I like it. I have also been told that you can use candy type paints sprayed over the foil to give it different shades for different applications i.e Tamiya clear orange #X26 will make a gold colored foil.
Cool idea bud. I’ve heard of it, but never tried it. Going to have to give it a shot. I’ve thrown away my last 2 sheets of BMF due to it not sticking. I made the switch to Hasagawa mirror finish chrome. Love their stuff.
Thanks, I have made this in the past and forgot about it till my last build. I have not tried the Hasagawa yet, a lot like it, will have to give it a try.. Have a good one!
That's definitely right up my alley! Thank you so much for sharing that tip! Definitely is one of the best I have seen in a long time. I will be using it for sure.
Wow!!! I have never used the bare metal foil as cutting the foil on the body just freaks me out. I have to say Kreg I am impressed with the demo and it seems to work really nice. Thanks for sharing.👍👍😉
Thanks Al, I use to think I was damaging a good paint job, when I cut, I use just enough pressure to cut the foil, never see any cut lines unless you go over it multiple times.. Have to give it a try, practice on a old model kit.. Have a good one!
Thanks Mike, I had forgotten about this until my Edsel build, thinking I could make better stuff than what I was using, then I remembered making it years ago. Thought would be a good tip to share.. Have a good one!
Awesome tutorial. For us paupers without an easy bake oven, how long should we let it set to dry before placing it on the wax paper? And how do you clean the residue?
I'm definitely thinking about trying this. A few thoughts though. Normally the best AF to buy is the heavy duty variety because everyone always complains about cheap stuff tearing. For this purpose however I'd assume the thinner the better? You probably don't want something super thick that doesn't conform to the fine detail as well, so actually the dollar tree stuff might actually be worth getting in this case! lol. Opinions?
Thanks Kevin, I had made this long time ago, after my Edsel build it come back to my memory and wished I would have used it instead of the BMF, I used the bright chrome on that build and thought it looked horrible.. Have a good one Kevin!
Dude!! your a life saver!! I did try that a while back..I saw that foil trick on another you tube but he used Elmer's glue..but that one you got at hobby lobby looks like it works better.. On another note.... I just did a how to do rust check it out..try it let me know how it works, and if you can do a video on it do it..I want to see how it turns out.😉👍
Thanks Man, just checked out your video, awesome. I will do a rust video one day for sure.. Took me a bit to figure out the glue to use for the foil, works good.
Amazing information! When do you plan to finish that 60 Starliner? I love that car, and have that model to build some day. I'd love to see what you do to it.
@@kregskorner8851 I just bought a new air compressor. I think my old Testors has given it up. Do you use one with a holding tank? I'm beginning to think I messed up by not getting one with a tank.
@@kregskorner8851 How do you get parts to hold together when they're painted? I use the same glue as you, but when parts are painted, they won't hold. I've always been a believer in putting plastic against plastic, but I thought with new technology in adhesives maybe it's not necessary to strip paint to assemble parts. (I hope I'm not being too much of a pest with these questions. I'm just now getting back into the hobby after a couple of decades away from it. You seem to really know what you're doing.)
Good video, I will give it a try. I've done lots of BFM, and added a few new words to the English vocabulary also. One question, what's the shelf life of this? In other words can I make enough to keep on hand, or is it better on a one to one basis?
Thanks Jim, I am not sure what the shelf life would be I would think it would last for a long time, for what I understand it wont cure on the wax paper side.. Will have to make some and set some to the side.. Have a good one Jim!
Awesome tutorial Kreg! I've never used BMF, seems too expensive to me for some reason; that and I'm always nervous about trying to cut it on a nice paint job. I may give this a try since the price is right. Plus, I'm always looking to learn how to do something new and this seems like something I can play around with on test bodies and not spend a lot of money. Question, do you need to use a lacquer or enamel clear coat first? Since the adhesive is water based, I'm wondering is a acrylic clear coat would react to it since they are both water-based. Thanks for sharing and have a great day. -David
Thanks David, I has made this years ago and slowed down on building kits and had forgotten about it, until I build that Edsel and thought I can make better foil then this. I think you would be ok on water base paints due to the glue is almost cured out. I had brushed some on my mat and some was on the counter top and it took a lot of water and scrubbing to remove it. Give it a try on a old kit and see how it does, it has a good adhesion to it. You would never notice a cut line in the paint unless you went wide on it, even so would hardly notice it. I don't press very hard just enough to cut the foil.. Have a good one!
Hi Richard, its a Ivation 9 Tray Countertop Digital Food Dehydrator Drying Machine 600w. Bought from Amazon for 130.00 was the best deal for the size.. Works amazing..
I have used cheap dollar store foil and spray adhesive. I never thought to put on something like wax paper to lay it on.

I'm trying to send the pictures but the email keeps failing to send
Great stuff, thank you for the information.
Glad it was helpful!
That is awesome Kreg. So much better than my BMF. Thanks. Ron

Sweet Boss 429 Stang build!!. That is another kit on my wish list ...
Thanks Tom, that is a nice builder, kit goes together well, one of my favorite builds.

Thanks, works good for large quantity on the cheap.. Have a good one!
Great tutorial! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Alan, It works pretty good..
Great tutorial, I can also use this method for bare metal airplane models.
Thanks James, for sure! I did a video on painting BMF and using it for pin stripping. Figured will work good for that as well. Have a good one James!

So smart bro 👌 great video!
Thanks, after my last build, the foil was no good. I had used this before and had forgotten about it, has nice adhesion to it.
Amazing information! When do you plan to finish that 60 Starliner? I love that car, and have that model to build some day. I'd love to see what you do to it.

Just saw this and ordered some of the adhesive to give it a try. Probably a stupid question but does the residue on the body clean up with water?
I'm not sure, I had not tried water, its suppose to be water clean up, I will try it next time.. Have a good one Rob!

Thanks, appreciate it! Have a good one BamaScale...
Huh, cool!
If you have an airfryer, that works too.
Yes, that would probably work faster with more heat..
