- Speedway was last staged at Hackney Wick Stadium in 1996 but memories of this much-missed East London venue live on through this timeless, nostalgia-filled DVD.
Who could possibly forget showman boss Len Silver's famous mantra: 'Make it a Date, Friday at Eight'?
This double-set DVD features exclusive new filmed interviews with former riders, promoters and management of the Hackney Hawks, Kestrels and London Lions, including:
Promoters Len Silver and Terry Russell.
Norman Hunter, Malcolm Simmons, Colin McKee, Colin Pratt, Bengt Jansson, Malcolm Brown, Graeme Smith, Barry Thomas, Laurie Etheridge, Dave Morton, Dag Lovaas, Ted Hubbard, Zenon Plech, Keith White, Finn Thomsen, Bo Petersen, Mark Loram and Ronnie Russell, all recalling their Waterden Road memories.
Plus special interview with Beverley Wright (sister of the late Vic Harding).
Clips of full colour racing at The Wick, including previously unseen 1976 match action, the 1978 British Speedway Golden Jubilee meeting, and both the Hawks and Kestrels in action away from their Stratford track.
Many previously unpublished still images of most riders who have worn the Hackney racejacket.
Great to see the old Hackney stadium again, four of us from Kings Lynn used to go fairly regularly and saw some fantastic racing. Wish we could go back to them days.
The Hackney Hawks. I was there the Friday night in 79 when we lost the late great vic harding. RIP 🙏 VIC.
I was there too and remember it. I was on the second bend near the kiosk, I was 7 years old. The night before I was at Wimbledon (*I think) with my dad I and got his autograph in the pits after the meeting. Little did we know. And the irony was Vic Harding wasn't supposed to be in the race when he had his accident. He was replacing Bo Peterson after he got injured in a previous race. Little details, but I remember.
Great memories, my Dad drove the service bus with my mum and brothers on board picking up punters going to Hackney Speedway
Great memories especially 1976 we only lost once at home to Belle Vue 38-40. We had the great Zenon Plech riding that year. Use to stand on the back straight by the clubhouse with Ron, John & Mark also the Smith sisters Anne & Angela - great times
A brilliant season with the weather so miss it Fridays
Oldest memory I have is of Roy Trigg, I believe they were red and blue then before the blue and white check. Later when I was about 10 we walked across Hackney Marshes with my friends every Friday to watch Colin Pratt and my favourite Bengt Janssen. After the toss Len Silver would throw 6d into the crowd.Could buy a lot of sweets with that. Great times. Cheers.
My old man was a massive Hackney fan. Followed them all over the country until he died suddenly. x
Loved going to Hackney, used to go there and practice on a Saturday afternoon, get the early and watch a bit of the greyhound racing in the morning, later raced there for Ipswich in the AJL, when I rode for Rye House we had practice days there, then when I raced Sidecars we went there to practice and also raced there as well in the second half. Len Silver is a top man and it's a great shame the stadium is no longer there and apparently there is nothing to say there was ever a stadium there in the new complex that has taken it's place.
I remember you Carl riding at Rye House on Sundays
Dave Morton and Keith White both raced for CREWE KINGS back in the day .👍👍👍
Brilliant times
My mum and dad would take me each Friday. They've passed on and so has the Wick. This was the original theatre of dreams for me which will stay with me forever. Thank you Hackney Speedway.
I always wondered about christer lofqvist why did he quit. Later learned he had a brain tumour ? Remember in the program len saying he took a dislike to him also think he was trying a erm engine which was not very reliable. One other thing was Doug wyer coming to hackney when we lost Dave Morton in 1978 that was a rumour we were told ? We got Finn Thomson instead. Was a magnificent time at hackney
I use to watch speedway at Wimbledon stadium and greyhound racing before it closed, and then Wimbledon football ground closed, thanks to Murton council.
Great video thanks. How LONDON Speedway has changed! How LONDON has changed. Saturated with immigrants now.
You're right there !
Meanwhile, most of the racist old farts have moved out to Essex.
Hackney's favorite speedway sons were Plech, Biggs, Jansson, Middleton, Peteresen, Thomsen and Olsson who added to Hawks/Kestrels pride who were not British.
