How many of you were familiar with "Whiskey in the Jar" before VoicePlay covered it? 🤔

Me. My Irish great-uncle was sitting at the bar in our front room 60 yrs ago. I was sitting beside him at the bar thinking he was singing it for me. I suspect now that he was singing it for my Dad our bartender (I was 12. What did I know?) trying to get a refill on the whiskey by singing Whack for the Daddio (asking for another drink.). This song goes back to the 1600s when a highwayman stole the fellow's money and later killed him when he came to take his money back. The man Patrick Fleming was hung in 1650. Groups that I have heard do this is Peter Paul and Mary, The Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, also while I haven't these groups version, Dubliners, Thin Lizzie and Metallica.

I only had Metallica connected to the song, but after listening to some other covers since VP's version, I'm sure, I heard some more "Irish versions" over the years. I just didn't realize that it's the same song, because of the completely different arrangements.
Not to forget: Nice video from both of you again, thank you very much!

This was one of my Irish grandmother's favorites, although she had different lyrics. VoicePlay uses the Thin Lizzy and Metallica lyrics. (Not my personal favorite because they changed the woman's name and left out the ending.)
Like a lot of old folk songs, there are many versions. As folk songs spread from rural taverns to big cities, and across the sea to America, the lyrics changed many times. The general story is of a highwayman (a man who robbed people traveling on roads) who scores big when he robs a military captain. He comes back home to a woman (his wife or lover) who betrays him to the same captain who he robbed earlier that day.
Her name is usually Jenny (to rhyme with "pretty penny") but Thin Lizzy used Molly... which doesn't rhyme. What she does to betray him also changes in each version. The one I knew growing up said Jenny stole his rapier and replaced the gunpowder in his gun with water, resulting in Captain Farrell surviving to arrest him. The singer ends up in jail.
After that, there are two endings. In one, the highwayman says that he went to jail without a trial, and he hopes his brother in the army will come and break him out so they can be highwaymen together. In another, he says they took his guns and sword, but didn't take his fists. He manages to beat up the prison sentries and escapes. He hopes to find his brother in the army, so they can go roving around the mountains of Kilkenney, because he trusts his brother more than Jenny. (Again, her name rhymes with "penny" and "Kilkenney.")
That's the fun of folk songs. They're always a little different, and there is no true "traditional" way of singing them. So it's fun to see VoicePlay make a totally different version of their own.

This is one of my favorite songs to sing in the shower. I've always preferred the Irish folk style and my favorite performance was by Roger Whitaker. I can't stand Voiceplay's version, especially Geoff's part in the beginning.

This is an old Irish folk song from the 1600s. Covered over the years including Dubliners (Irish folk group), Metallica, Thin Lizzy and many others.
You called the very end "just behind the scenes". A lot of people like seeing and hearing some of how the video was made.
I know you've been doing this a long time but my suggestion is with Voiceplay and Geoff you should really watch all the way to the very end. They also show a running Thank You list of most of their Patreons. Without these people their videos would not be possible as that's how they pay for everything needed to make the videos they make.
I am a proud member of Voiceplay, Geoff and Pattycake Productions. Not high enough to be on the list. But I'm very happy for what I can give and receive.

We do watch the credits, it's just that I usually edit it out of our final video because most of our viewers stop watching the moment the song ends, which really hurts the video retention 😅

This is an Irish folk song from the 1600s. It’s been covered countless times in many styles in the past 350 years. It is about a famous highwayman who ended up being hung for murder.

I had never heard or heard of this song before VP's cover. It took me a while to warm up to it, but now I find myself singing it all the time. One of the things that initially threw me off, though, was the contrast of it being an old Irish folk song and their arrangement. Since the first listen, I have thought it sounded like a 50s doo-wop song, so when you mentioned that, I was like.......yes exactly! It's a gorgeous arrangement with beautiful harmonies, though.
    Happy birthday, Carrie!

I wasn't familiar with it - but it apparently goes back to the mid 1700's. Peter Paul and Mary did a version called Galgarry Mountain. (and yes! Happy Birthday!)

Had never heard of this song before, but i hear it is from the 1650's, True Irish story of a "Highwayman" who robbed 'Captain Farrel'...afterwards, he took the money to his 'Ladyfriend' Molly, he went out to get drunk...we think she got word to Captain Farrell, as to where he could be found, when he came back to her. As the lyrics sung by Omar suggest...it was 6 or 7 (AM or Pm) they don't say....but Captain Farrel showed up, possibly to arrest or kill him, he shot, presumably killed Captain Farrel and went to prison for his crime...Molly 'betrayed' him.....Happy Birthday Carrie🎂🎂🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳❤💝💖💗

I hope you plan to react to the new songs on PTX's new Christmas album. "O Holy Night" is stunning and of course their original, "Please, Santa, Please" screams Christmas.
