Of course this is the original version that was written for Judy by Harold Arlen for the film A Star Is Born in 1954. Judy Garland is 32 years old here.
I agree completely. Yes Grace Kelly was amazing with her performance in The Country Girl, but in my mind Judy by far deserved the Oscar. Her performance was off the charts. She was not popular with the producers for not showing up and quitting certain days where they had to stop filming. It drove them crazy, but humility should have been the motive behind that decision. It would have humbled her to see humility displayed towards her. Her self esteem would have grown also. Either way, I look at her as the winner.
Judy sung the heck out of this damned song. HANDS DOWN. Such talent surrounded by leeches and a mom who allowed child predators and drugs into her child. Forty-seven years old at her death! RIP JUDY!
I recall a story about Van Johnson who was an actor from the 1940s and later. He attended a party at Judy Garland’s house in Beverly Hills. She sang until 4am. Van’s wife wanted to leave because he had to be onset early that morning. He told his wife this is a once in a lifetime moment. I’m not leaving.
@@darjacksdj I just don't think that Gaynor was the artist Garland was. Also, James Mason is the best male lead of the four films - he was not praised enough. Garland and Mason together are truly magical and heartbreaking.
Exactly! I can see her emotional response to each phrase and you might say she was acting but she was also being real. Emotional detachment would have negatively affected her performance; but her offstage life would probably have been better if she'd had more rest and not experienced the yo-yo dieting that she did to conform to an unrealistic standard.
Correct. She's mind blowing. Honestly, I've listened to a lot of singers... I have probably the most diverse taste of anyone I know... and pretty much I'd say Judy Garland is the voice of the century. Which, really, means of all time at this point. Nobody this century comes close. Last century... she's pretty much the best, for so, so many reasons. It's her vibrato, her holding of notes, her knack for knowing when to take it easy and when to unload. I mean, listen to something like the later version of By Myself, from the London sessions, where she starts softly and builds to explosive intensity. Or listen to something like Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home from the 'Judy' album, a performance absolutely loaded with light and shade, with ebbing and surging. Phenomenal is right.
@@ScorpioTobias86 , beautifully said. In my evaluation, only Ella Fitzgerald compares with her as a singer, and of course each was stylistically much different from the other.

There's a great video by The Take called "1955 | Grace Kelly defeats Judy Garland for Best Actress" that gives a detailed explanation for how that happened. ruclips.net/video/zDBXKP6L9iY/видео.html
Grace Kelly had three hit films that year. And in the early 50s for an actress of Kelly's beauty to play a dowdy housewife, wearing a frumpy sweater and glasses was like Charlize Theron's transformation in Monster. A Star is Born, despite revisionist history, was a huge bomb in it's day. Garland left Metro and her addiction challenges continued at Warners. In those days they did not have the same understanding of addiction that we have today and she was merely viewed as very unprofessional. The delays on A Star Is Born were so extensive that George Cukor left for a time to start work on another film and the studio inserted that Born in a Trunk sequence which makes no sense at all. I keep telling people that you cannot judge the Oscars with a modern lens. You can look back at a number of films that were highly honored and seemed dated just a few years later or the attitudes towards certain performances or actors have shifted. Garland's singing alone in this film is one of the most outstanding displays of talent ever caught on film
I've watched this at least 8 times and it is one of the most awesome performances ever given, in my humble opinion. The live version when she is older is even better. What a woman.
She used everything she had when singing: voice, spirit, body, emotion. I love how she moves her hands and body. Watch this again without the sound and see how you can still "feel" heremotions. A true genius.
Control was an issue all of her life. Who wanted to, attempted to and actually did control her was at issue throughout her lifetime. But when she got in front of the camera to sing or onstage to perform, she was in complete control. Of Everything. The audience, their emotions, reactions, her musicians, accompanists, her voice, style, technique, gestures, movements - everything was under Her control and expertise because of the consummate performer she was, making her the unique, beloved and stellar artist she will always be.
Others who sang this song: Sinatra. Streisand. Fitzgerald. Vaughan. Bennett. Minnelli. Garland is the originator, and the definer, 70 years and counting!
I have loved this song to the Moon and back since I was knee-high to a mosquito! This is the ultimate torch song of all time! Judy Garland owns this song!
THIS is how one doesn't only sing or performs a song but INHABITS a song so that the song and the singer are fused so tightly together that the audience can't separate one from the other.
1:37-1:57, 2:23-2:38 and 3:37-3:50 are basically a single note repeated, but she is able to make every note different and express a world of emotion in them. That's genius.
Imagine: in seemingly one take (less than 5 minutes long) Judy Garland belted out a powerful, magical torch song, whose power to move us has lasted for over 65 years! She not only sang those lyrics, but felt every single note in her soul. What makes it so much more poignant is that Judy never did really find a man - anymore than she found the other side of the rainbow. Ironically, it is partly the tragic nature of her life as a troubled but PRODIGIOUSLY gifted person that will indelibly etch her in the minds of all those with any taste whatsoever, because there is no one today who can even remotely compare to her. In the past, yes: Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline, Doris Day, but today? No one. Maybe that’s for the best.
Kate Hobbs: You’re right, of course, but dubbing was the norm in that era (and, I dare say, due to background noise, it was necessary). In any case, as you realize, it doesn’t detract from the power of her performance, because in post-production, when re-recording, she had to ensure that EVERYTHING was in sync with the expressions on her face in the footage and not just with the movement of her lips. I’d never thought of this before, but that achievement only magnifies her talent.
@@katehobbs2008 Not “Dubbed”!!! Not ever. That term refers to another singer, who sang on the soundtrack in place of the actor on screen. Like Natalie Wood in West Side Story or Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Judy is singing to her own track here. Which was just the way they made movies.
It took three costume changes and about 40 attempts over the course of 4 months to get it to look right though. It wasn't Judy's fault, however. She nailed it, but the first cinematographer got fired because the set was too dark and drab for the old film stock to really work. They had to keep making changes to the set and the outfits and lighting until everyone knew exactly what to do in the final day of shooting.
@@stephenclothier4228 It's the opposite: first she recorded the track, and then she mimed along to it (though not really miming; she's no doubt singing aloud, along to her own recording, though we only hear the recording). So she wasn't syncing her singing to the image, but lip syncing to her own recording.
It doesn't take away from her stupendous performance in one take, but viewers do realize that while she is singing, what we're hearing is a recording made weeks earlier in a recording studio I imagine.. She's singing to her own playback so she's not lip synching exactly. It seems unthinkable to have 3 brass (although muted) playing just a few feet from her during a real recording. But I could be wrong--she is a belter.
I agree. This version showcases Judy's range of talent like no other. She was robbed of an academy award for this. Grace Kelly couldn't hold a candle to Judy!

We still have this classic scene to remind us of her talent and raw power. NOBODY can sing this song like she did
There is so much going on here. What starts out as a jam session unleashes the character's desire to entertain. Arms in the air, joy on her face as she becomes that dream she has. Seeing the clip outside the storyline adds the personal dimension. Judy's talent, love life, and personality all rolled up. The new movie brought me here. Hope to see it soon. Thanks Judy Garland.
Shot in one perfect take. Look closely and you’ll notice that there isn’t a single edit. It’s the first time that a vocal performance was shot in one take for a theatrical film and there’s nothing but smooth camera work from start to finish in her performance as was conceived just before the scene was filmed. Judy produced the film and put most of her money into it. The passion and emotions in the film are very close to the surface because she was close to losing everything as she was much of her life. Poor tortured soul. She gave nothing but love to everyone and so many took everything from her.
It' s not to late Hollywood to do the right thing and give Judy her oscar. Her kids will thank you and the fans like me will thankyou. This destroys me every time I listen to this version of Judy sing this. No one else can do it better. This is my favorite version of A Star Is Born. Barbara got her oscar and so did Gaga. No y'all need to right this wrong and give it to her kids. Judy was robbed. This was one of her finest performances ever . I love Grace Kelly too but I'm sorry after the performance Judy gave in this movie. It was hands down her oscar.
The best showgirl ever! Adorable Judy was the master of entertainment. She was charismatic, talented, fragile and lovely. She died when I was 13, and I was already a gay teenager in love with her. I have been in love with Judy since 1963 when my dad took me to see the Wizard of Oz in a very old movie palace in downtown Mexico City. I wish I could tell her how many people loves her and admire her today, after 51 years of her untimely passing. Love you Judy. Keep shining in heaven.
This is my favorite arrangement of this song, and Judy's the singer who I feel sings it better than anyone. Great Harold Arlen melody, wonderful lyrics by Ira Gershwin - and a marvelous arrangement/orchestration by Skip Martin. Thanks for posting this.
Judy was such a superb singer. Watching this clip, we can all tell she really enjoyed singing this torch song, the way she interacts with her fellow musicians, moving around from one person to another, and they’re all happy to be there doing their part. It’s a sad wistful song with a poignant message, but Judy’s rendition and beautiful powerful voice transcends the sadness, and she turns it into an enjoyable fascinating experience. She TELLS the story with her voice, her life experience, and her gestures, and were transported from sad wistfulness to pure joy. It’s a mesmerizing film clip, and I love what James Mason’s character, Norman Maine, says to her. His character recognizes a great singer when he hears one. ❤
This is true genius at work - or should I say play. This genius doesn't come from work but flows as naturally as clouds across the sky to a place you can get beautifully, seductively and completely lost in...There's a Brilliant shine in every word...
One of a kind, brilliant, a true entertainer in every way. This is one of her best performances, OMG & this song! One of the greatest entertainers of the century.
Now that’s talent. If young people want to see raw talent without the auto tune and full of heart wrenching emotion this is it. Absolute perfection of a torch song.

it's a classic for every reason any good work of art is a classic. just effortless skill, precision, and passion, complete mastery as is her whole performance in this film.
It's now 2024 and I'm still listening. Judy's performance could've blown the roof off of the entire studio with "The Man Who Got Away" alone. An astounding performance, and just the beginning of so many stellar moments in "A Star Is Born". Judy displayed the highest amount of her talent in this film. Grace Kelly put on a frumpy costume and walked away with the Oscar. There was no comparison between the two actresses. Judy performed circles around Grace for almost 3 hours. If it wasn't so heartbreaking it would be laughable. Judy got fooled, but totally ruled the Oscars. Now run along, Grace, the prince is waiting...

"The man that got away" was named OSCAR! lol It's a shame too.
Yep I got chills and cried too. Man o man. They sure don't sing like that anymore
This is epic cinema in a powerhouse performance by an extraordinarily gifted singing actress. A simple set up and simply...Amazing!
This sequence was all in one uninterrupted shot, no breaks!
Brilliant! Should have got the Oscar for this song alone!
a master class lesson in presentation. Judy could bring it and Judy could sell it.
This is my favorite arrangement of this song, and Judy's the singer who I feel sings it better than anyone. Great Harold Arlen melody, wonderful lyrics by Ira Gershwin - and a marvelous arrangement/orchestration by Skip Martin. Thanks for posting this.
This is soul singing
The only one who can sing this song.
Warner Bros should’ve shown this to MGM and say: “See what you just threw away?!”
Laughing because dreams. This is lovely meaningful
The really was the best take of this scene of all of em! Love me some Ms. Garland!
No one can sing like Judy Garland. She had such a presence and a super voice. ...
Incomparable - Judy, you were and still are, the greatest of them all :-)
The very absolute best song verdion Judy sang. Bar none. Genious. Nobody touches her in this song, not now, not then.
What a talent! Judy Garland was one of a kind.
Beautiful! Always gives me goosebumps and a lump in my throat.
This dame just gets to you......
Now that’s talent. If young people want to see raw talent without the auto tune and full of heart wrenching emotion this is it. Absolute perfection of a torch song.
Pure Class and REAL talent. Forever.
LORD BLESS IT ! Judy was an incredible woman! Her dramatic roles were perfect!
2:20 is the best part! And then her hair flip! It was notorious for this movie! How shes explaining what that man did to her. I can relate to Judy in some form. LORD BLESS IT ! Judy was an incredible woman! Her dramatic roles were perfect. her makeup and hair was always on point. And her body was absolutely gorgeous! And when she says "GOOD RIDDANCE GOODBYE!" it was just so awesome lol The hair flip part, I always mimicked that when I was a little girl 🤣🤣 I wanted to be Judy Garland! !
Song was made for her and vice versa
Oh Judy Judy Judy!!❤
Absolute perfection - the emotion, the phrasing, the stunning voice and delivery - the one and only Judy.
Just absolutely UNBELIEVABLE voice!!!!

@@horsewhale9, I’d add Gloria Estevan to the list. Also Chrissie Hynde. Both are Baby Boomers.
From the Silent Generation, I’d add Ella Fitzgerald. She was amazing.
HeyvTrimpetBoy1955! Thank You for putting this up. I’m blasting it at 3:30 am Marathon Monday 2024. Just what I need to lace up and get to work.
Love to all the Judy Garland fans today and every day.
She lives every word of the song as she sings it. I got chills. Pure magic.
This sends chills down my spine.
Think you can sing? Try this song, without getting your vocal cords tied in knots. You’re watching a phenomenally talented performer grab this song and run off with it.
Absolute pure magic...as is her version on 'Live at Carnegie Hall'.
Her singing this song with such passion yet tenderness does something to me!
She was truly amazing ! So sad that she did not have the support to get her over the battle she had with them all…..
it's a classic for every reason any good work of art is a classic. just effortless skill, precision, and passion, complete mastery as is her whole performance in this film.
That Esther Blodgett sure can sell a song.
This is chilling !! Who’s listening in 2019...?!
2020 :)
We're in a new Dark Age, but there will always be a handful of us who know.
Listening in late September 2024. 😊
Every time I watch Judy sing she just puts me in a trance and my eyes are dazzled and I have a huge smile/“in awe” look on my face. She was one of the greatest entertainers to ever walk this earth
Out of the park, again. No voice can compare. Showmanship!!!
That song was 2019 Lit,Beautifully sung and amazing, Okay Ms Judy!
I bought this movie because its a classic I'd never seen it but it had judy garland and james mason that was enough for me to buy it. This song is so great 30 years ago i would have laughed at it but ive grown and your taste in music changes
the entire ensemble was perfection and the camerawork to bring the musicians close to embrace her was wonderful. Her excited laugh at the end was touching
Stunning performance of an outstanding song by a truly great singer.
artists and music from these times is the BEST
Music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Ira Gershwin-------Judy at her finest, ever.
Kills me *every* time.
It just does not get any better than this absolute masterful vocal by Judy. ------MJL< 76 y/o
Perfection!
I ask myself the same damn question!!! Judy we love you, ALWAYS AND FOREVA!!!
