  • For me, nothing beats being wrapped up warm beneath a tarp on a clear winter's night. Surrounded by a fresh blanket of snow, as I lie beside a warm, crackling fire and gaze out at a bright, starry sky.
Join me for a quick and simple overnight winter tarp camping trip into the Algonquin backcountry, as I try to stay warm on a cold, but beautiful night. This was a laid back trip, as one of my main goals was to scout out a new place and test some new gear. It was a great little overnight trip and it's always nice to get out in the winter. Being able to spend time outside, despite the cold temperatures, really does make winter all the more enjoyable. Tarp camping in the winter is quickly becoming one of my new favourite ways to get out in the cold.

Cold camping has to be one of my all time favs. When people ask me why I love it so much I have a hard time putting into words the beauty and the silence mixed with the crisp air. I guess it's one of those things that you need to experience to understand. Love the new tarp, thats a wicked set up.

Thanks guys. Totally agree. It’s a lot of fun and a very different experience. I’m pretty impressed with that new tarp. I’ve never used a CCS tarp before but so far so good. Can’t wait to use it on the first canoe trip of the season.

Tip from an old timer. When you get into camp unload your sled and hang the curl over a tree branch so it stands on it's tail. In the morning you usually don't have to scrape the bottom or if you do it's much less. Thanks for sharing.

I kinda love it like that. Nice to be able to see everything and feel like you're actually outside (although I will say in the middle of the night I might have traded it for a hot tent haha). Thanks very much for the comment.

Thanks for the video. I have been rewatching your winter trips to get psyched up, it is the beginning of September now. I was in Algonquin the same weekend but I had the luxury of a hot tent I pull into the backcountry. I did a tarp trip a couple of weeks later in another park, but it was not that cold. The hardest part I find, is packing up all of the stuff for the hot tent when it is cold. Almost better to set up a tarp for all of the effort for a weekend trip.
    Thanks again!

I agree, the silence is almost deafening in the winter. And a mummy bag is probably the way to go for those really cold nights. I have the CCS tarp stuff sack and I love it. Especially when taking a tarp down in the rain.

I love winter camping too. A whole 'nuther experience! For the last 12-13 years I've been using a hammock exclusively. Your rendering of the experience was so good I had to put on a hoody and a cup of hot cocoa. I noticed the tarp in a number of your videos and was going to ask about it, but you answered it. A CCS as I suspected by the tie-outs. I have three of different sizes, and for the smallest, I had Dan Cooke make a custom vestibule to my specs. Great for canoe camping x 10yrs (until I switched to hammocks. I like your ridge line set up. I've got mine all in snake skins, but I'm inspired to try your set up with the bishop bag. Cheers.

Well, Keenan, you have the LOTN anorak and Bob Dustrude saw too. Not to mention the toboggan and gear bag. Now you need to make their winter moccasins, and be all set for the cold weather. My wife and I love our outfits too. Have you ever tried the upside down fire? My wife and I love it in the winter, a four tier log fire (upside down) burns a good 4-5 hours. We made a stew and had plenty of hot water for tea and hot chocolate. Love your videos.

Good stuff Keenan! White gas is definitely the way to go for meltin snow!!! I tried my trangia on a trip in late December. Temps were 12F for a low. I tried it after my msr white gas stove ran out of fuel. Took longer as you would expect but did work. My buddy had a full fuel canister for his stove so we were fine. Good to try different things when safe to do so. The mountain had just been blasted with a blizzard so all biofuels had a layer of ice on them, then covered in snow😂👍🏼. I liked your commentary on the food. Pretty hilarious 😁👍🏼. Take care sir. NQU

Thanks very much Shawn. The top bag does have big beefy zippers that I haven't had any issues with so far anyways. The zipper seems big enough that I'm not really worried anyways (and I am super picky about zipper size.). The bottom bag is zipper less and works awesome. The gear bags are both made by lure of the north. They make such high quality stuff. Appreciate the comment Shawn.

I like your anorak jacket. What is the brand name and where can I buy one?. Great video as always, thanks!

Looks like an enjoyable night in the woods. Something about winter camping is just extra peaceful. Curious what anorak you have. We've been looking at the ones from Lure of the North as they also have a kit to make it yourself which could be a fun project!

That’s what I’ve got. Ashley and I both got one and they are our favourite piece of winter gear. Love them.

Did you change your socks for the night? Any dampness in any clothing sure can make for a chilly night.

Hi Jane. I actually didn’t change my socks at night but they were dry. Could make for a cold night though.

Where in Algonquin is this? I am looking to do some back country winter camping but not fully sure what access points are open?

I think in this video I was near rock lake. If you phone the Algonquin park office they’ll give you a list of what access points are open and plowed. There’s quite a few.

No. I don’t think that source lake campground rd is open in the winter. I’d have to check that though.

Unfortunately she had to work while I was out playing around in the snow. Otherwise Ashley would be right there beside me.
