This was my favorite band in the 90s. Powerful, dirty, sick and sensual. I Couldn't get enough of them. It's good to know they're back. And on Sub Pop, too! That's poetry.
Four years on, I'm still listening to this one. While it will never replace classic Whigs albums like _Gentlemen_ or _Black Love_ for me, it's a damn fine album. IMHO, _In Spades_ is Dulli's best work post Black Love. Giving up the smokes made such a difference in his voice.
I have been a Whigs/Twilight Singers all around Dulli obsessed fan for over 20+ years. I never thought they (he) could top Black Love, which is my favorite album of all time....yes all time. But godamn if this album (can we still use that term) isn't breathing right down the neck of Black Love.....this is masterful from beginning to end.
Very worthy effort, dark, catchy and rocks like classic Gentleman, Black Love era Whigs. I miss McCollum on guitar, but the new guitarist is a good fit and adds something to their sound with his own playing style. Most underrated band of the 90's refusing to rest on their laurels as is made clear by this effort.
Good eye! if you knew that you may also know it is from an episode of the Untouchables, "The Rusty Heller story" If you like her and have not seen her in that it is a stellar performance and available here on RUclips.
Yeah, I Agree I would go so far as to say better than 1965 that just seemed too cheery to be a proper Whigs album. It almost sounds like it would have came between Black Love and 1965.
Demon in Profile is an extremely haunting, though-provoking spin on the old "crossroads" story of selling your soul to the devil for fame and fortune. Well done Greg!
Didn't even know until yesterday they had a new album! I have been a fan since 1991/1992. I am glad Afghan Whigs were never huge because I believe this has allowed them to make stunning music and have longevity. One of the only few bands from the 90s that didn't die a horrible death. They may just be able to land their spaceship with dignity.
it is amazing to see how each album shows the growth and depth of talent of every instrument and lyric from Whigs' Big Top Halloween through Gutter Twins to Twilight singers Dynamite steps and bringing all the energy back to the Afghan whigs last two. . this is a beautiful album. I am blown away and more of fan now than ever before.
Album cover, this voice, lyrics and music make me feel like I was in some other dark and obscure, but at the same time exciting and beautiful place. I found this band accidentally and I'm really happy because of that. Great work.
RIP Dave Rosser. my favorite band since the 90s lots of beautiful music on so many great albums. seeing them live is euphoric . although I can name a bunch I think my favorite bit of music by this band is the bridge in Fountain and Fairfax. it sounds like someone wringing out an ocean of tears! truly one of the great songwriters of rock and roll.
Theres is nothing like this that exist, glad to be alive and enjoying this, just bought this vinyl to add to my T table! Saw them live many times and on this tour and their last tour recently because thats where its at!!
Impeccable album. Thank you Greg, the Whigs, and SubPop for making this happen. Just noticed you'll be live at the Showbox in Seattle on October 18th!! See you there, gents!
I own all of their records (and I recommend you do the same :)), but for an overview of their earlier work, the "Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006" compilation is excellent
Instant heavy rotation after the first few listenings are #1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 10, which really isn't too bad, eh...if I had to choose two favourites it would be Into the Floor and Toy Automatic. Thanks for making the record listenable on jutube, SubPop. Look forward to the concert; great to have the Afghan Whigs back :=)
The artwork of this album is astonishing. I had to order Vinyl Loser edition and MC cassette just because it's so beautiful. Music is incredible. I must check out this band's other works.
yes, this is a very underrated Band...hopefully their status will change in the next years..Their music is wonderful and interesting..love them since the 90`s
Greg. Old Oxford friend. Chat me up. Ken Meadows worked at Mac and Joe's. You guys went to the school in Middletown. I'm glad you guys are getting airplay finally in Indiana.
Just saw them at the opera house in toronto. didnt know them b4 last week. Im sold. Very good band. ill enjoy exploring all of their earlier material. Chris
Can someone explain to me how to pick the best song from this album?! Cause the are all the best...and they all are my favorites...Thank you The Afghan Whigs and thank you mr. Greg Dulli ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wasn't sure if I would get to see them again. Fortunately, they will be in Dallas in October. Already have tickets in hand. Love the new album. Greg Dulli is the best song writer on the planet, imho.
I recently added "if you're Greg Dulli" to my okc profile question, "Why I'd want you to message me (or something)". Then I find a new album and tour. Fuck romance. Men. Music has always been there.
throwback radio music... when the music was good and the artists were ugly... well, as many named chicks were on the last album, I want to say not as hyper sexualized... lol term used loosely
I wish I could enjoy it as much as you; like Do to the Beast before it it has its moments but at other times feels a tad flat and samey to me, I don't think the song writing is as strong as it used to be. Still, it's pretty good.
00:00 Birdland
02:48 Arabian Heights
07:56 Demon In Profile
11:20 Toy Automatic
14:15 Oriole
18:21 Copernicus
21:50 The Spell
25:36 Light As A Feather
28:45 I Got Lost
32:05 Into The Floor
This was my favorite band in the 90s. Powerful, dirty, sick and sensual. I Couldn't get enough of them.
It's good to know they're back.
And on Sub Pop, too! That's poetry.

Dulli is the man
The rhythm changes and intricacy in Arabian Heights is pure genius.
Reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy drumming
thank God these guys will never be mainstream, "into the floor", is mesmerizing, what a band, what a wonderful album....
Such a fuckin great band
I have been a Whigs/Twilight Singers all around Dulli obsessed fan for over 20+ years. I never thought they (he) could top Black Love, which is my favorite album of all time....yes all time. Neil, Black Love isn’t my fave album of all time but its in my top 10. Ive had In Spades for two weeks and you’re absolutely right mate
Same here but I have Gentleman higher tyhan Black love...
Gentlemen is my favorite
Gentlemen my fav. This is OK but not best
After Gentlemen and Black Love how is it just now in 2024 I discovered this album @54...😊
Time flies... Haha
This is a great record!
This band is the best kept secret in the history of music.
Very worthy effort, dark, catchy and rocks like classic Gentleman, Black Love era Whigs. I miss McCollum on guitar, but the new guitarist is a good fit and adds something to their sound with his own playing style. Most underrated band of the 90's refusing to rest on their laurels as is made clear by this effort.

much better than do the beast!!
Yeah, I Agree I would go so far as to say better than 1965 that just seemed too cheery to be a proper Whigs album. It almost sounds like it would have came between Black Love and 1965.
the Whigs were always rated. Just not by the masses. It's a good thing. Get to see in small venues when Greg and his buddies tour.
I think if it wasn't for Mark I wouldn't know about this band.
Demon in Profile is an extremely haunting, though-provoking spin on the old "crossroads" story of selling your soul to the devil for fame and fortune. Well done Greg!
RIP Dave Rosser.
Man what an outfit. The singer is as cool as it gets.
Didn't even know until yesterday they had a new album! I have been a fan since 1991/1992. Greggory Bradford
So true ❤️
Crazy talented people making crazy talented music...
Album cover, this voice, lyrics and music make me feel like I was in some other dark and obscure, but at the same time exciting and beautiful place. I found this band accidentally and I'm really happy because of that. Great work.
I've never heard of them before, but now that I'm two minutes into this album, I already love them.
What? Gentleman should be your next listen.
and then Black Love!
Mindblowing!!!
Same here...although I knew of them
if You love THiS album, then their album "GENTLEMEN" will Blow Your Mind❗ 💔 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Welcome back, boys. Always glad to see you.
Theres is nothing like this that exist, glad to be alive and enjoying this, just bought this vinyl to add to my T table! Saw them live many times and on this tour and their last tour recently because thats where its at!!
Greg Dulli rules the world.
A criminally low number of views on this masterpiece. Dulli and company continue to churn out wonderful music.
Impeccable album. Thank you Greg, the Whigs, and SubPop for making this happen. Just noticed you'll be live at the Showbox in Seattle on October 18th!! See you there, gents!
Me too!
Amen - this album is pretty much flawless. Showbox will be a great show....I'll get them 5 days earlier on Friday the 13th in LA.
One of the best albums of the year!
How this has so little views???? this is an amazing record by a legendary band!
Never heard before. I love finding new bands. Great vibe, dark and edgy. I really like it!
Not really a new band, but glad you found them.
Yea, thanks.
also check out twilight singers and gutter twins (Dullie's other bands
I own all of their records (and I recommend you do the same :)), but for an overview of their earlier work, the "Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006" compilation is excellent
Wait till you see them performing live! Even more amazing!
My favorite Whigs album to date, and I've been along the whole ride with them. See you in September!
Look forward to the concert; great to have the Afghan Whigs back :=)
Grandissimi afghan per la loro, in primis, originalità e poi la voce di Dulli, struggente
Great album, can't stop listening. Such a unique sound, but they make it sound easy.
Just saw them at the opera house in toronto. didnt know them b4 last week. Im sold. Very good band. ill enjoy exploring all of their earlier material.

Stupendo bellissimo grazie care Pellicce Afgane
I'm 3 times through, possibly my favorite album on the millennium so far, and best Whigs since 'Black Love'
I'm a casual and very late fan of the band. like this very much...
Rest in peace Dave.
It's my favourite band since
I've heard them for the first time in 1998. Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱😊
I can't wait to buy this amazing album, but meanwhile I thank you for posting it!

Wasn't sure if I would get to see them again. Fortunately, they will be in Dallas in October. Already have tickets in hand. Love the new album. Greg Dulli is the best song writer on the planet, imho.

Its a pity I live in Scotland. I would have replied lol x
Never listened to them beforehand but this is great.
one of their best records
Instant CLASSIC from the boys!
Thank you subpop, i would pay avidly for this yet it is free
Is this better than Gentleman or Black Love...
No, yet solid record.
In hindsight, it is better... 😊
Is that the guy from the Dopethrone cover?! ;P
I thought that there won't be a better album than Do to the Best. I was wrong...
This one is even better :)
''BEAUTIFUL''
класс! С первого раза не понял эту музыку, но после нескольких прослушиваний подсел на эту группу!!!!!
Campeche Mexico. This was my thyme
Picked this up in a charity shop based on the album cover. Fucking hell... this doesn't happen everyday.

AWESOME!
Una señora banda de rock.
Damn, great album.

Fucking masterpiece
Toy Automatic reminds me of Sunny Day Real Estate.
In love
Wish i could buy their records, but it's so fucking expensive here in my third world country! So fucking sad!
Grazie .....
Since my teens!

And at the beginning of forty dollars - twilight singers, Greg did it too.

beati voi che abitate in america , dove c'è una massiccia legalizzazione.
si sente l'influenza degli x-mary
esticatzi?
Ti buchi?
throwback radio music... when the music was good and the artists were ugly... well, as many named chicks were on the last album, I want to say not as hyper sexualized... lol term used loosely
36 minutes? Surely you jest?
albums worth depends on its duration? It's still longer than the Beatles' classic albums.
Many classic albums are less than that. Do to the Beast isn't much longer.
I wish I could enjoy it as much as you; like Do to the Beast before it it has its moments but at other times feels a tad flat and samey to me, I don't think the song writing is as strong as it used to be. Still, it's pretty good.
So different from their early records (that were different from each other too), not for good, I must say.
This is good music.. But that band name is just awful.
They got their name from bikers club under the same same.
Initially were named Iraqi Beards.
