Fun Fact: This game was the first appearance if Banjo and Conker. Conker was meant to be a kid friendly character before Rare made Conkers bad fur day.
If you watch my N64 retrospective, I spend an inordinate time talking about Diddy Kong Racing, haha. Basically, Mario Kart 64's item system meant that even if you weren't that good at the game, you'd still have a fun time playing it with friends. In DKR, the items are helpful, but too weak to be absolute game-changers on their own. Of course, that also meant that winning was based mostly on your skill, and that's why I'll always hold it in higher esteem.
This is my favourte N64 racer. When you're really good at it you can go like twice as fast as the opponents (at least in the car). And the adenture mode is sooo awesome. I guess you can't get into these kind of games properly when you didn't really play it 10 years ago. Or rather 15.
As has been said before, DKR is definitely a better game than Mario Kart 64. The game is huge with so many different tracks, modes. Just brilliant, vintage Rare.
I like them both for different reasons. DKR's track design is rather uninspired compared to MK and the controls don't feel as tight. It is more diverse though and the story mode and the overworld make it really stand out. The multiplayer modes are both awesome to this day.
I disagree with your assessment that Mario Kart 64 was better. this game had better graphics, more tracks, the option to use a kart, plane, or hover craft, the ability to upgrade your power-ups, unlockable characters, cheat codes, and an awesome adventure mode that you could play in two player mode with boss races that were fun and challenging. and once you finish the game, you can unlock the mirror image tracks. I am not saying Mario Kart was a bad game, in fact, I absolutely loved it, but it did not have any of these features. Diddy Kong Racing was by far the better title
wayyyyyy better than mario kart 64. its like not even close man! from the driving physics to the tracks, to the variety. the game has a load of personality as well.
+Brodo Swaggins Completely agree, this is a very poor review with mentions of "to be fair" as if DK is some kind of 3rd rate game. The problem is the reviewer obviously only played Mario Kart back in the day and hasn't actually played DK Racing properly but has only switched it on to be recorded for the review. "Mario Kart is better there is no doubt"??? and "I kinda don't get the adventure mode" obviously hasn't played it because it isn't some mystery. Banjo pilot is a copy of DK.
Manko Slayer Personally I agree that this is a better game than MK64, but since I didn't play it that much, I don't have any nostalgia to it. Shame because it looks like a great game
No way Holy OUTER SPACE COMMAND! My family love this game Facing each other and enjoying it. This is what game for family, friends and relative could spend time together plus compete In FFFFUUUUNNNNNN!
This was always my favorite game out of the 6 games we ever owned. I loved how colorful the scenery was. Always a cheerful game, but we never actually owned Mario Kart 64 so in sure we still missed out.
Diddy Kong was always a great game, but it was somewhat hard for us as little kids. Took us years to beat a lot of stuff, and we still haven't fully completed everything and we've owned the game for so long, since the '90s lol.
The8TrackChap Actually not really my brothers and sister we all shared one file together and beaten the game. Completed everything, but of course it wasn't easy playing the game because like always a fight over who going play and who's not.
I understand why you like Mario Kart 64 better. There's an argument to be made. But DKR will always top it for me.
Definitely worth owning today and definitely better than Mario Kart 64. Not that Mario Kart 64 was a bad game but this game simply pushed the genre forward even if the characters weren't memorable. However if you want the perfected formula today play Sonic's All-Star Racing Transformed.
That's weird. Mark usually likes the skill-based Mario Kart games better than the ones with more luck. I thought he'd like Diddy Kong Racing a lot more since it is more about hitting speed boosts than grabbing powerups. And even then, you know exactly what powerups are what on the track, so you can pick what to go for.
The reason DKR was the best for me personally was that I could really get into the ridiculously imaginative qualities of the adventure, and the fact that there was an adventure to begin with, but mainly it was because there could be more of a skill gap. This game took more effort to get good at it. I still have yet to accomplish the impossible and unlock TT. With Mario Kart, it was always a toss up as to who would win because of how the item system was set up. I will give Mario Kart the benefit of being a better party game since there always seems to be that moment at the end where two players are neck and neck, but getting together with other equally skilled players made DKR equally fun in that aspect as well.
I got both Diddy Kong and Mario Kart, and rarely play Diddy Kong. Mario Kart is a cult classic, and if you play both after one another, you will feel that you only want to play Mario Kart. But on positive, I do like the fact you have hovercrafts, planes, and cars.
So glad you are back with reviews on youtube Mark!! The site where your reviews had been viewable since moving off of YT always made my browser crash just minutes into each video:( Yay for CGR!!!
to answer the question at the end diddy kong featured in the donkey kong country series making him popular, donkey kong country 2 is one of my all time fav games
This is an excellent game with a good solo experience, featuring some great races against bosses, the toughest of which I found to be in the hovercraft racing the fiendish octopus. Welcome back to RUclips CGR.
This is better than MK 64 in almost every department, people just say it is better just because it is Mario Kart. MK 64 is weaker than the other entries in the series, anyway.
maybe I'm being a bit biased (and maybe its the nastalgia talking), but I definitely liked MK64 better than the other MK games. Maybe its because it was the first MK I owned growing up... not the first I played, but the first I owned :P Nowaday I play either MKDS or MK7 which are also really great games :)
Brian Bullock They made the CPU competitive (in MK) and DK had more things to it than MK. Plus my family would get exited from defeating bosses (in racing) and unlocking characters.
I was so relieved when my parents brought this for me in grade 5. :) Was already a MK64 and SNES driver but as said in the video the planes and adventure mode set itself apart so it was a must play back then.
So happy to see your reviews back on here! Honestly I had no clue you had started putting your new reviews exclusively on the CGR site and I thought you were just taking a little break from game reviews. Regardless, happy to see you back!
OMG Diddy Kong Racing. I love Diddy Kong Racing. Probably one of my favourite racing games ever. I love the imagination of this game. The adventure mode of this game really sets it really far above Mario Kart 64, but I definitely think gameplay wise they are on par.
***** I'll admit that the track design is perhaps more intricate in MK64 (it's been a while) but Diddy Kong Racing, with the different vehicles, and certainly the single player mode, has a lot more to offer. It really depends on what point of view we take regarding its 'qualities'. But, to this day, the A button on my N64 controller sticks because of how much time I played MK64.
***** Given the cost of N64 games (I paid 65GBP for Rogue Squadron! that's over 100USD at today's exchange rate) I didn't have all of the games you mentioned. I think I probably played F Zero at a friends home, same as Wave Race. Personally, I really liked Star Wars Racer -- that was the futuristic racer I chose. Sadly, though, after playing that, Mario Kart just seemed so damn slow. It was really hard to go back afterwards.
RUclips felt a little emptier without you around CGR, good to see you again. That said, this game was originally meant to be a sequel to the RC Pro AM games on the NES. Nintendo suggested they use Diddy Kong and the rest is history. It was a wonderful game, full of awesome music, graphics, and a metric ton of gameplay to be had. I'll always remember playing through that Christmas village, with that kickass remix of "Winter Wonderland" blaring as it snowed outside my house... I suppose it's not quite as... refined, as Mario Kart, I'll say that. There is a craziness or just a hectic nailbiting sense in Mario Kart that's not quite there in DKR. But for the most part, the two games are different enough that there's more than enough room for both of them. And seeing as Mark was (and is) a Genesis man back in the day, I suppose he wouldn't get the appeal of Diddy Kong from the Donkey Kong Country series. Trust me, he ain't nothing like Godzuki or Scrappy Doo. By the way did CGR review Crash Team Racing? That's like the spiritual successor to DKR, with the whole adventure/racing mashup. Would be nice to see after N64 week is over.
When you're reviewing anything be that food or a game, try to leave your preconceptions at the door. Your review for this game was very poor, unfair and the language you used is loaded. This may seem like nitpicking but on the whole if you're doing this to other games you didn't play at the time of its release you're not going to do them justice and this will ultimately reduce the quality of your channel.
I can’t confidently say that I like Mario Kart over DK Racing or vice versa. They are separate entities to me that both happen to share colorful characters and go karts, but beyond that there’s very little comparison. Mario Kart had the most memorable and favorable characters, while DKR had different vehicles and better, interactive race tracks in my opinion. I distinctively remember the awesome pirate ship and winter race tracks. DKR had way better graphics, but the required coin collection challenge races sucked. Mario Kart definitely takes the win in that aspect. No stupid coin challenges, just simple straight forward cup races with points that accumulate based on the outcome of each race. DKR had cup modes too, but like I said, adventure mode with those obligatory coin challenges for each track was painful. I hated it so much. As far as challenge, DKR bosses were pretty damn tough (especially the dragon and Wizpig). Mario Kart 64 was easy peasy. All the cart classes honestly felt the same to me and it really wasn’t hard to place 1st every single race, unlike the original Super Mario Kart for SNES. I like both titles, but for very different reasons. If someone where to add up all the positives from each game and create a game based on those, I have no doubt that you would have the greatest and most fun racing game ever created.
And also in MarioKart 64 Royal Raceway as we all know has the castle yard little 'easter egg' area on the side of the road. I think rare saw that and thought they could mix Mario 64 lobbies and maps into a racing game.
Someone's probably already brought this up by now given the age of this video, but probably the most interesting and distinguishing feature about Diddy Kong Racing is its single-player "Adventure" mode, where instead of playing through a dry and generic Grand Prix by yourself like in Mario Kart's single-player, there's a '90s mascot platformer-style "hub world" that you have to explore in your vehicles to collect items and unlock levels. It also had boss races where you took on something other than another kart/hovercraft/plane, usually under seemingly unfair circumstances, and would have to puzzle out the best strategy to win. Since playing multiplayer with friends was a relatively rare treat when I was young -- my school friends lived seven miles away from me -- the depth of this single-player mode gave this game a lot more value than Mario Kart 64 for me. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed feels like a spiritual successor to this game in many ways, since that also has a detailed single-player mode with unique challenges, but to my knowledge no other games of this type have taken the "'90s platformer with karts" approach quite like Diddy Kong Racing did.
Welcome back, Mark / Classic Game Room! I will like to hear your review of Super Smash Bros., Super Mario 64, Blast Corps, Zelda, Majora's Mask, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Yoshi's Story, etc. You need to review more N64 games if it's called Nintendo 64 Week. I know you already review some N64 games in the past, but reviewing more will be appreciate. Keep it up, Mark!
i agree with mark, mario kart is simply better, it aged better, has better tracks, less gimmicks and is more important in the n64 library. its always the z gen kids that prefer perfect dark to goldeneye or diddy to mario kart.
Ah, Mario kart and diddy Kong racing were my first games for the n64 because they came free with the system. Of course, there was a deal going on with select games only.
I like this game more than mario kart. The bananas make your vehicle move/accelerate faster. Each power up has 3 levels of it, giving a little bit of stragegy. It's adventure mode with the boss races and challenging silver coin races. I love it. I'd easily go for another DKR over another MK any day.
I really wish Mario Kart would take ideas from this game like airplanes and stacking items. Yup, forgotten in the review was the strategy of stacking the same item pick up for an upgrade like rocket, homing rocket, and 10 rockets! So much fun.
Welcome back, you have been missed here. And what a game to return with. DKR, one of the best kart racers of all time with. It definitely has the best adventure mode of kart racers though. I would say in order it is Crash Team Racing, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing series, DKR and then MK64. MK64 is great but highly overrated honestly. As for Diddy, he did save Donkey Kong in DKC2 as well as be the one to help him in the first game and countless others. He's done more than Luigi has to deserve his own game lol. He's also his own character, not just the overshadowed seen as inferior partner.
I don't understand how many people pick Mario Kart over this. They probably never played this game. Multi-player is insane. Various tracks to choose from, a battle royal shooter, collecting eggs, bannanas and bring them back to your base. Oh then there's the whole adventure mode. Yeah have to come in first in all of the worlds and win the trophey race in all of the worlds. Then you fight the boss. Triceratops, Dragon, Walrus, Octopus, etc. After you finally beat all of that you have to then go back and re-beat every track while collecting silver N64 coins. This takes a lot of time and repeat playing of tracks for some levels. You have a final race against Wizpig at the end as well. I remember playing this when I was a kid with my brother, my friend and his brother in his granparents basement like every day. This, Golden Eye, And a couple of the Mario Parties literally burned holes in the big tube tv we played on. There was always a fight for Oddjob, and color variented controllers. Oh and "the chair".
All the comments have nailed this. Anyone who thinks Mario Kart 64 is better is quite simply a victim of clever marketing. Pros of DKR: Smoother driving physics. Vehicle variety. Boss battles. Coin challenges to break up the race. Secret characters. Themed worlds. Greater soundtrack. Adventure mode. Pros of MK64: More popular roster. Slightly more interactive environments.
I never actually understood that until others such as yourself pointed it out. I always just put it down to "bad graphics" but I guess my tech knowledge wasn't so good. True though!
+heel09152 Don't you feel so much more happy now that you know that? I bet you've been having sleepless nights and crying days because didn't knew about that.
This was my first game i opened when i got my n64 when i was 5 my mom and i played for about 15 hours straight our first run when it rereleased on ds i was so happy then the added wifi connection multiplayer made a huge difference. I was never alone on diddy kong racing.
This is my favorite racing game ever, and I'm a huge fan of Mario Kart. The tracks were designed so brilliantly. If you had a buddy that knew them forwards and backwards (I luckily had a few friends that loved it as much as me), then the races were basically a stress test of how flawlessly you could run them while managing to eek out a few extra feet for the win. The AI couldn't fuck you because there was no "come from behind" weapon. Plus, the boss runs in the single player mode were brutally hard. A truly glorious, under appreciated gem.
Fun Fact: This game was the first appearance if Banjo and Conker. Conker was meant to be a kid friendly character before Rare made Conkers bad fur day.
No "Take out the leader" power-ups automatically makes this better than Mario Kart
Yeah I always hated that. Kind of a cheap way to make races closer. Rewards the racers doing shitty and punishing the best.
If you watch my N64 retrospective, I spend an inordinate time talking about Diddy Kong Racing, haha. Basically, Mario Kart 64's item system meant that even if you weren't that good at the game, you'd still have a fun time playing it with friends. I think the Honest Trailer Guy said it best: "...it teaches players that winning and being the best driver don't always go hand in hand." haha
***** Truth!
I always preferred DKR over Mario Kart, and that was one of the reasons. It pretty much made you hesitant of getting in first place.
This is my favourte N64 racer. When you're really good at it you can go like twice as fast as the opponents (at least in the car). And the adenture mode is sooo awesome. I guess you can't get into these kind of games properly when you didn't really play it 10 years ago. Or rather 15.

I agree! So much more to do, the story mode is fantastic and challenging and multiplayer is great! Way better than Mario kart imo
Diddy Kong Racing is far better than Mario Kart 64, there's no doubt.
Is not
These guys playing in the video are pure trash at this game, so it only makes sense that he thinks MK64 is better.

It's great to see CGR game reviews back on RUclips! I also support your motion to set Pipsy on fire and eject her from the air lock :-)
My first Video-game, back in 2006 my parents gifted it to me, for the DS. I love it.
Console at the left of the SNES (2:30)?
Welcome back to youtube!
Welcome back, my friend :)
Mark thank you for going back to youtube. But one thing I will miss is my rank!
Yay! CGR is back! Praise be to Lord Karnage!
What did Diddy do to deserve his own game? He SAVED DONKEY KONG, that's what!
Welcome back, CGR!
Welcome back to RUclips.
The real problem with both Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart 64 is that Crash Team Racing existed and blew both those games away.
This was one of my favs on n64 like Mario Cart only with a great story mode
I really wish Mario Kart would take ideas from this game like airplanes and stacking items. Yup, forgotten in the review was the strategy of stacking the same item pick up for an upgrade like rocket, homing rocket, and 10 rockets! So much fun.
I loved this game! I remember buying it the day it came out (it was right around Thanksgiving if I recall...I was on break from school).
Love this game so much. still have it and play it
Good review, but please never compare DKR to MK64 ever again.
Why
Finally another game review! I was about to unsubscribe until I was greeted with this. :)
Loved the adventure mode on this game. Really set it apart from other mascot cart racing games.
Finally! Back to RUclips
Oh and "the chair".
welcome back mark!
All the comments have nailed this.
Anyone who thinks Mario Kart 64 is better is quite simply a victim of clever marketing.
Pros of DKR:
Smoother driving physics. Vehicle variety. Boss battles. Coin challenges to break up the race. Secret characters. Themed worlds. Greater soundtrack. Adventure mode.
Pros of MK64:
More popular roster. Slightly more interactive environments.
Don't forget that Diddy Kong racing had real 3d character modles and not just 2d modles like Mario kart 64.
Yes mate it feels like a blue shell has been lifted from me
+heel09152 Then you owe me a favor.
This was my first game i opened when i got my n64 when i was 5 my mom and i played for about 15 hours straight our first run when it rereleased on ds i was so happy then the added wifi connection multiplayer made a huge difference. I was never alone on diddy kong racing.
welcome back mark
This is my favorite racing game ever, and I'm a huge fan of Mario Kart. The tracks were designed so brilliantly. If you had a buddy that knew them forwards and backwards (I luckily had a few friends that loved it as much as me), then the races were basically a stress test of how flawlessly you could run them while managing to eek out a few extra feet for the win. The AI couldn't fuck you because there was no "come from behind" weapon. Plus, the boss runs in the single player mode were brutally hard. A truly glorious, under appreciated gem.
I just love your show so much!
Im so happy that CGR came back to youtube :3
Welcome back !
gamemaster14neo Plus, his personality is completely different from Bad Fur Day in this game.
