    Anyone is entitled to pursue any career they like and a person is not defined by their career or employment status but by the personality that they have. Your parents shouldn't be disappointed about anything as their son is happy and passionate about what he has chosen to do with his life and I don't doubt at all that you are extremely good at what you do. However I have to say most builders are common and you definitely have to be the most poshest, well spoken builder I have ever heard. You would have obviously picked that up from your schooling years at boarding school.
    After watching your video I was brave enough and wallpapered a feature wall last weekend and OMG it was so hard. B and Q really nice cream damask embossed wallpaper and it was very thick wallpaper so maybe that's what made it harder to deal with.
    Trying to line up the paper next to the other and make sure no overlap or gaps , same time match exactly the pattern, hold the weight of the paper and actually then brush down to not get bubbles, it was hard. Next time I think I will have to just recruit a posh boy builder to do it. Xxx

    Nice video Harry. One little tip I would offer is that if you roll the paper so that the back is facing the wall and not the front you will be able to drop the paper straight down the wall easily without getting any paste on front instead of having to handle it all the way down the wall, especially useful when dealing with longer drops.

    Hi, thanks for the fab video, very helpful with lots of useful information and tips, so glad I watched this one and all the others.
    Can you help with a few decorating question please. If the wallpaper (Laura Ashley) is to be pasted on to the paper can you still cut the corner edge with a Stanley knife or will it tear. Excuse my ignorance I don't know if wallpaper that has the wall pasted is different. Do you cut the edge with a standard Stanley knife blade or do you recommend a special cutting knife? Could you tell me what decorator tool is called that you used as a guide when cutting the edge with the Stanley knife, any ideas where to source?
    I am wallpapering two alcoves (the rest of the room is emulsioned. The wallpaper is a large pattern and there are windows either side of the chimney breast in the alcoves. Do I start in the middle under the windiws and work outwards? Also should the pattern run continuous across both alcoves or have the identical pattern either side which would mean to the eye, two separate patterned areas if you know what I mean! if worked as separate areas I think I would have to start in the middle but do the pattern the opposite way. As the wallpaper will not run around the room I didn't know I'd it should look continuous face on the individual alcoves or individual. I hope my question makes sense it's difficult to explain what I mean. Thank you for any help and advice you can give me, very much appreciated. I tried to find a website to email you but couldn't find anything.
    Keep the videos coming please - fab!

    Thanks for the advice Harry, I understand what you mean. I think I will test both methods I have two large sample pieces I can practice with to see which method yields the most pleasing result. By cross line I take it that you would line the wall first horizontally with lining paper? After I do my test though of course. Is this because of the brand new skim coat or is it just to get the best finish? Any particular type of lining paper I should go for? The fire place does look lovely. I'm an electrician by trade and there's only so much enjoyment and satisfaction you can get from a perfectly square socket!! It's nice to sit in the evening and look at the result of my hard work? The wall paper will finish the job perfectly. If I get brave enough I could post a vid to show you when it's finished.

      Thanks for the comment. Some decorators are from the school of thought that you should work your way from the corner and away from the window. I can see there point. But I think for symmetries sake the finished result is always nicer if you start in the middle. Regards H

    Thanks for the tips. However if you end up with a gap as it originally showed, how do you fill that bit. Do you measure from slightly off centre to avoid that problem or do you stick on a tiny strip in that corner ? Thanks.

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 8 лет назад +1

      +JANE HOLDEN Hello. Thanks for the letter. I`m afraid I had to stick a small strip in each corner.
      The best way to avoid the small gap at each end in this particular case would have been to hang the wallpaper exactly in the middle of the wall instead of each side of the centre line.
      The problem with that is it only works with repeat no drop wallpaper. Thats why I did it each side of the centre line as 90% of the time thats the best way. The inch gap was a little unfortunate but not too difficult to deal with.
      Regards H

    .....i did that and it worked a treat.....now...when i come to paint window archatrave ...will you recommend a tape that will shield paper but not tear surface? oh and the pattrrn on mine was really staggered..so i lost about a foot or 14 inches each drop...i cut one roll all wrong ...but i learnt from it so not a total loss....

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 7 лет назад

      mick falvey: Hello again. There are probably many brands of tape on the market. But the tape I use for this specific purpose is made buy tesa. The different masking tapes come in different colours depending on what they should be used for. The tape used for masking over wallpaper is pink (it's the least sticky) If they don't have this particular tape where you are, just explain in you local paint store what you want the tape for and they should provide the correct one. Very best of luck. H

      On watching you vid, as a professional myself & you saying you were a stickler for symmetry, you didn't pick the obvious top to the pattern at the ceiling line. The pattern has a point to it, I'd have been sure that was at the ceiling line, to me attention to detail both sideways & ceiling line come hand in hand. I would have cut a cross for wire not a circle, pushed thru then cut minimum paper away, also, don't take sockets off, but feel for corners, lift wallpaper, cut to corners, then ease paper up to sockets & take off excess against straight edge.

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 6 лет назад +1

      Theresa Wood : Sorry for the late reply. In answer to your comment I totally agree with you about your first point. I completely forgot to mention it in the video ( and it's my fault) that there was going to be a cornice put up afterwards so the points of the pattern were actually in the right place. I totally agree with you about this point. I always check the top as well as the sides. (I cut into the ceiling for the sake of the demo)I don't agree with you about the x cut for the wire though. I see your point, but I find cutting a circle more preferable for me as it avoids tearing ( that's just personal preference 🙂). As for the socket. I prefer to remove it. My wallpapering partner agrees with your method though. I suppose we all pick up bad habits along the way. Thanks for writing. Regards H

    In answer to your question after 6 drops of wallpaper there was as you pointed out an inch left at each end. So to fix it , with the remaining length of paper I cut 2 inches of each side.
    I then using lots of glue firmly held the strips into the corner butting the joins firmly together then applied extra pressure with the strait edge in the corners and less pressure to the blade so the paper moved as little as possible.
    Hope this was useful. Harry

    Hi Harry. How are you? Fun to see a video of you when randomly searching for advice on wall papering. Super useful video. I had it it playing in the back ground first and thought the voice sounded very familiar! We are about to put up Jotun glassfiberstrie over old ´strietapet´. Any tips? Will the same priciples apply as you just in this video? I´ll be watching this video again and again just to make sure we am ready for this daunting task. We living in Tina´s old flat.

      Hello! what a nice surprise! Great to be back in touch.
      The principal is the same if you are applying new glass fiber over old structured glass fiber. But the preparation could be very different depending on the state or the type of glass fiber that is already there. I will try to get in touch with you again and hopefully talk to you before you put up the new glass fiber.
      All the best H

    Great video Harry, I have just installed a hole in the wall type of wood burner (cassette type) that sits inside and surrounded by a split faced slate tile panel. This is the main feature in the lounge and to really make it pop off the wall I want to use wallpaper either side of the panel and into the corner to make it a complete feature wall. The wallpaper is from Zoffany it's called Fiamma ebony. It's a vinyl type no pattern as such it says to reverse hang alternate lengths? The wall has been skimmed with normal thistle finishing plaster and the slate panel sits dead centre but is slightly uneven along its edges. Any tips for papering either side of the tiled panel with these variables would be greatly appreciated as the papers £90 a roll!! Gulp!!

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 8 лет назад +1

      Hello again. The fireplace sounds lovely. I will try to help as best I can without actually seeing it. The first thing I would do is cross line the walls. There are a number of options for wallpapering away from the fireplace. If the edge of the slate isn't too rough you can start wallpapering two or three mm away from the edge. That would give you a nice clean line. Or you could take the wallpaper right into the edge of the slate so that you have a cm or so to play with, as if. Your going round a corner. Then follow the contours of the edge of the slate through the wallpaper,, tightly as you can with a blunt edge like the one on the end of my knife. Then carefully cut down the contoured edge freehand or using a very small putty knife. Or you can do the same procedure, but instead of cutting with the knife, after you have worked out the contours of the slate walls edge. Lift carefully away from the wall and cut along the contoured line with a pair of very sharp scissors.

    Great video, really helpful. I have a feature wall I am going to wallpaper but it ends on an external corner. Do I start in the middle as shown in the video or at the external end?. If I start from the middle how do I cut on an external corner?. Expensive wallpaper so want to get advise before starting. Thanks

      Thanks for writing. If wallpapering a feature wall with an external corner, my advice would be to start from the external corner and work my way inwards. But start from about a millimeter away from the corner to avoid damage as the corner can easily be scuffed. Regards H

    you should always start from the end where the light shines or you can get a shadow from any slight overlap in the paper. City and Guilds.

      Thanks for writing. "Although bad decorator is a little harsh" Starting from the middle or the corner is a matter of opinion. I like to start from the middle because I believe symmetry is very important if you are doing only one wall, because if you start in the corner the pattern will be cut in half at the other end. Hence the finished product not being half as pleasing to the eye.
      Starting from the corner is how it used to be done because many wallpaper hangers used to overlap the paper. But if as you say hanging from the corner helps to disguise shadow from overlap ( which a professional decorator shouldn't) my humble opinion would be that if you overlap you will see it regardless wether you hang from the middle or the corner. Regards H

    Just a little tip to make life easier for anyone not used to wallpapering, that job would have been so much easier if you had centred the first sheet instead of putting it to the side of the centreline, then it would not have left that nasty little inch wide strip at either end and then you would have had larger but still equal cuts at both ends.

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 10 лет назад +5

      thanks for the constructive comment. I think you made a very valid point. I considered doing it the way you suggested. But as I made the video for beginners and not professionals like yourself I thought starting from the center point would be easier (just my opinion)
      It was a little unfortunate that I was left with an inch at each corner. That very rarely happens. Bad judgment on my part :-)

      pm18r As a matter of fact the pattern top to bottom was done correctly as there was a wide cornice put up afterwards. The measurements were worked out before the video was made.

    Harry, I have purchased a wallpaper mural for my son's bedroom, which is slightly smaller than the wall, thus leaving a border around the sides, top and bottom. The whole mural comes on a roll and, therefore needs cutting into strips before hanging.
    Would you have any tips on how to trim across the entire mural in order to ensure alignment top and bottom, please?

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 5 лет назад

      Steven Brown : Hello. Usually murals on a roll have a dotted line top and bottom that you cut with scissors. But if that's not the case, what I do is hang the mural first then get two nails and tap then into the wall on each side at The top of the wallpaper where you would like to trim it then attach string to the nails and tighten it. Then using a strait edge, cut along the string line and remove the excess wallpaper before it dries. You can also do the same along the bottom if necessary. I hope this has been helpful. Regards H

    hi, i was wondering how did you cover the little gap at the end because i want to know because that is the problem i had

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 7 лет назад +1

      Hello. It is exactly the same principle as with a wider gap. just cut a thinner strip of wallpaper. And when holding the strait edge into the corner, while cutting, hold the strait edge a little firmer to stop the wallpaper from moving, which it is prone to do when its just a thin strip of paper.
      I have uploaded a new video "How to wallpaper a feature wall: which I hope covers everything I have missed in this video :-) I hope this has been of some use. Regards H

      Thanks for the kind words, glad the video was helpful
      I had a look through some other wallpapering videos and couldn`t find one for walls leading up to a slanted ceiling either.
      If you still havn t tackled this wallpaper problem yet then just send me a little more information and I will try to help as best I can. H

      Thanks for the response. Basically I`m going to paper a wall in our attic. The wall leads up to a slanted ceiling at about 30 degrees. So from my left the height of the wall to be papered is about 2.5m all the way down to my right to a height of .5m. I guess it`s just common sense. As you said in that vid, just take your time and don`t rush it. But, clearly you`re the expert and this is my first go at a wall and I weclome any advice. Listen, if you`d prefer, I can send you a photo of the wall if my explaination is not so good. Just mail me your address. Thank you again. Tony.

      I have wallpapered many Walls with a slanted ceiling, They may seem a little daunting but its exactly the same principle as wallpapering a normal wall.
      But judging from what you have written I would suggest that you start from the highest point and work your way down and as you said take your time
      Very best of luck. Any more questions just write and I will try to help as best I can. H

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 8 лет назад

      Hello. You have to do exactly the same as if there was a wider gap. Just cut a strip that fits the gap and goes a little bit around the corner so that you can trim it. The only difference is that when you trim it you have to hold the trimming edge a little firmer into the corner as the paper tends to slip a little when it's such a thin piece. Regards H

    Thanks Harry I bought Norwall Damask Wallpaper from Walmart and there are no instructions on soak time.How can I test a strip to see what works best before I waste a whole roll on a wall?

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 6 лет назад

      Bob Abooey : Hello. Sorry for the late response. First thing you should do is check their website if the wallpaper has come without instructions. If the wallpaper is non woven then you mustn't soak it at all. But if it's a normal wallpaper then I use anything from about 3 to 5 minutes to soak the wallpaper depending on the temperature of the room. The warmer the room the less soaking time. Very best of luck. H

    • @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529
      @onceuponawall-harryanstice2529 8 лет назад

      +Absolute Plumbing I wouldn't do the same on each wall if you are doing the rest of the room. As you are doing the other 3 walls with another wallpaper I would start from the middle of the wall on the other side of the room and work my way round to the corners. That is if you want the pattern to look even. Otherwise start from each corner of the feature wall, but don't meet up in the middle of the opposite wall. Work your way to the most insignificant corner. Eg the corner behind the door if your door is in the corner of the room.

But for example the wallpaper in my grand parents house has been there since Victorian times, about 140 years old. The wallpaper nearest the window is a bit faded from sunlight though🙂 regards H

      It's probably a bit too late now but I hope you didn't pay them before they had started.
      No professional wallpaper hanger would leave the top and bottom un trimmed.
      If they worked for a large decorating firm I would complain to their boss! I hope you took photos.
      You should never have had to finish the job yourself. At least not at that price.

      Hello. I have wallpapered many concrete walls. If they are smooth, treated well and painted they are the same as any other wall. But I would suggest that when wallpapering a concrete wall you should use past the wall wallpaper with ordinary past the wall glue.But if you can't find one you like, and you have to use ordinary wallpaper I would advise cross lining the walls first. Very best of luck H
