I've actually played with this in PVE!!! it actually has big damage potential on packs because of how shield of the righteous gets buffed by Judgement, final reckoning, wings, and that consecration talent on the paladin tree. I managed to squeeze 220k-250k dps overall w spikes of 1 million in m+ in lower keys this season with the new paladin changes using the season 2 tier set w an ilvl of 489.
Back In season 2 I managed to reach 2500 io exclusively using ret paladin with a shield which I thought was the coolest thing ive ever accomplished. and nobody was complaining about the damage during my runs which were usually m16s that season.
I even have some clips posted of it.
thought it might be worth sharing my findings :))
but for it to do enough damage for 2500 again would require another amazing set for it like season 2's or something that doesnt force you to use a 2h weapon.
Wish a 1 hand and shield dps spec existed for real, miss glad warrior but a d3 crusader style paladin would be sick af too

I did watch a 5v5 1v1 shield ret was solid on that right up till a afflic loc. shield ret is a meme build but does have it's strengths aswell.
Yo...I just tried this and was the top damage dealer in my BG. It's actually fun. I just picked up the 447 weapon and shield instead of spending conquest on it. Just wanted to try it. Definitely fun to used in non ranked games just for fun.

Curious if you ever Min/Maxed this. I'd be interested to see maybe if you went more mastery/crit for damage.
Im pretty much max mastery as it is, havent tried crit with this build but cant exactly see why it would be good due to hammer of wrath already having 100% crit chance
I recently make a fury build using 2h main hand, shield offhand, (I call it the spartan) relying on slam and shield slam as main damage sources, its pretty fun as well, you should make one if you have a warrior!

@@LvladenPvP Are you cooking it? I tried arms warr with one hand shield and basicly you dont play mortal strike and you buff your slam with talents alot. its fun off meta build :D
@@aCosmicTitan Do it with fury instead. Since you can get a 2h wep, and still spam bloodthirst in combo with shield slam/slam

Just found this video. I've mained Prot Paladin in PvP since 2009. I just returned to the game this past week, and went into my first BGs yesterday... accidentally got thrown in a Ret (due to how I queued) and had to make do with no talents at all, no prep, but did okay... I'm curious as to how a 1H Ret might play right now in the pre-patch to The War Within?

You can switch weapons in combat btw. So you can make a macro for a gear set with a 2h and another with a 1h and shield and swap back and forth as you see fit. It only takes a global to switch weapons in combat

Not worth unless you are going for single target burst. Inquisitors ire is really nerfed in pvp.

What makes 1 hand do more damage? Talent or passive?
Its not doing more damage haha it just attacks faster than a 2h weapon so u can get more crusading strikes out.
@@LvladenPvP so I'm guessing it's just the bloodlust that's making him hit harder? Most rets at full mastery don't hit that hard.
@@loyalsandman Hmm, my 2h version definitely has larger crits but yeah could be zerker!
@@LvladenPvP typical arena crits are 140k I'm guessing it's the zerker 30% buff.
Honestly, I hate it when videos are made in bgs where they're like "look at my crazy damage." But it's from BG buffs
@@loyalsandman yeah, but you gotta look at the buffs while watching...he doesn't have zerker all the time. He 1vXs without the buff pretty well. He smokes a Ret/Hunter/Hunter/Boomie, while defending against ranged attacks from a Mage/Evoker at the same time...all without Zerker. Not bad.
So sad that ret is a better pvp tank spec then protection XD
Maybe worth as cheese RBG tank at low rating too
Ehh I wouldnt say its that tanky haha, also lacking a good amount of mobility which is really important in tanking.

1 handed ret spec sucks, wear 2 engineer bonus 1 stat gear for tankiness having 43% vers helps that.
Its more of the crusaders reprieve and proccing judgment of light that increases its sustain. Rather than having the shield itself. Faster autos = more healing.
