In January February must remove snow right after snow falling stop....otherwise it would get hard like stone ....no need use much of salt....to throw salt never use bare hands ....use some working or proper plastic gloves .....it react on skin....goodluck....beautiful snow white near december hoildays...goodluck for new comers

After snow shovel, you have to throw snow salt on that. So it will stop to make hard ice or black ice. Your both sons will get used to very soon. Z
