this is one of those songs that people who don't play guitar have NO IDEA how difficult it is. awesome job. love how you put your name instead of John's name
@@anhtuanfasa6953 sure anything is possible w a whole lot of practice but I’m sure we can agree this is difficult to pull off for the average guitar player
Retired music educator here...that was excellent! Hoping you were involved with some music programs while you were in school. If so, I would think they would be very proud of you.
This performance is better than the one on John Mayer's album. Yes, the guitar playing on the real album is better/cleaner and the singing on the album is also techinically more proficient, but John's performance lacks the emotion needed in such a song. Specifically when you get to the section of the dad talking to the son, you "give" the song SO much more. That emotion elevates this performance to new heights. The last bridge acts as a perfect buildup and fakeout for the last chorus, and you put the exact right feelings and emotions into the sections. When you get to the next chorus "find yourself singing 'stop this train'", it really does sound like you just found yourself back in this old mindset and you are melancholic and sad that you've allowed yourself to sink back in. You've really showcased your great understanding of this song and what it is trying to do. I thank you for letting us hear this amazing performance and wish you the best of luck in your continued endeavors. Never stop the train!
Holy cow! I'm 35 and was looking for vids of this song to learn how to play it after my grandmother passed away. This highschooler played THIS song in front of his graduating class AND absolutely killed it?!? Mad props to you, sir! It's a challenging song. Great job!
Life changing lyrics! Literally a poem written into song. Amazing voice and guitar playing!! No, I'm not color blind I know the world is black and white I try to keep an open mind But I just can't sleep on this, tonight Stop this train I want to get off and go home again I can't take the speed it's moving in I know I can't But, honestly, won't someone stop this train? Don't know how else to say it I don't want to see my parents go One generation's length away From fighting life out on my own Stop this train I want to get off and go home again I can't take the speed it's moving in I know I can't But, honestly, won't someone stop this train? So scared of getting older I'm only good at being young So I play the numbers game To find a way to say that life has just begun Had a talk with my old man Said, "Help me understand" He said, "Turn sixty-eight You'll renegotiate" "Don't stop this train Don't for a minute change the place you're in And don't think I couldn't ever understand I tried my hand John, honestly, we'll never stop this train" Once in a while, when it's good It'll feel like it should When you're all still around And you're still safe and sound And you don't miss a thing 'Till you cry when you're driving away in the dark Singing, stop this train I want to get off and go home again I can't take the speed it's moving in I know, I can't 'Cause now I see I'll never stop this train.
its just such an intense song because of how real it is too. it really makes you want to make the most of the small amount of time you get on this world.
This is one of those songs that when you listen to it, it sounds easy, but is actually difficult to play and sing esp in front of a live audience. You killed it man. Love the nerves brother! Not easy to pull off John's songs live!
Bro, you did such an amazing job. Daring to play this live and hold it down is one of the hardest songs to sing while concentrating on keeping the tempo and rhythm while singing.
Flawless playing! And I really like how full of passion you sang starting from 02:36, with lots of conviction and a really nice raw voice! Reminds me a lot of Bruno Mars (and that is a compliment). Good song choice for your grad!
Perfect graduation song, probably not performed like this at too many high school commencements. Tune reminds me of Neil Young's 'Sugar Mountain'. Awesome.
I've loved playing this song for so many years. It's one that is always one you're working on. So difficult to really nail, but you did about as well as I've ever heard. Bravo!
Damn good job, young man. I play music full-time for a living as a LoopingArtist for about 30 years, was the first looping artist in Chicago in the late 90s, and I’m a very proficient guitar player, but figured I would go on RUclips to look at videos on how to play this song, which is something I never ever do. John is a beast, and this is a very tricky song to play. So I figured I would look up how to play it here on RUclips. I stumbled upon your video here in the process. phenomenal job Nolan!! very impressive work
And to nail the timing like that… this song is extremely difficult
Exactly. This is not an easy song to play, let alone sing in front of an audience of people you know. Awesome
People underestimate how fucking hard this is to play. Hats off to you, man.

No, I'm not color blind
I know the world is black and white
I try to keep an open mind
But I just can't sleep on this, tonight
Stop this train
I want to get off and go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can't
But, honestly, won't someone stop this train?
Don't know how else to say it
I don't want to see my parents go
One generation's length away
From fighting life out on my own
Stop this train
I want to get off and go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know I can't
But, honestly, won't someone stop this train?
So scared of getting older
I'm only good at being young
So I play the numbers game
To find a way to say that life has just begun
Had a talk with my old man
Said, "Help me understand"
He said, "Turn sixty-eight
You'll renegotiate"
"Don't stop this train
Don't for a minute change the place you're in
And don't think I couldn't ever understand
I tried my hand
John, honestly, we'll never stop this train"
Once in a while, when it's good
It'll feel like it should
When you're all still around
And you're still safe and sound
And you don't miss a thing
'Till you cry when you're driving away in the dark
Singing, stop this train
I want to get off and go home again
I can't take the speed it's moving in
I know, I can't
'Cause now I see I'll never stop this train.
