Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. The front door replacement and new trim going up once it's done, AND of course the 2nd bedroom (your ideas always inspire so can't wait to see).
Awesome job, would recommend that you put a ceiling vent in as it is a small area. Heat rises and it can get quite stuffy up there.
Fantastic! Cut a couple more notches in the ladder a foot lower. then you can lift it up and hang it flat against the wall when you aren't using it.

They need a safety rail with grab handles and lighting…
Personally I would have made the ladder longer. It have reached or longer then the floor in the loft.
That was my thought when they were making the first notch. A lot of small spaces/tiny homes do that. I can see them getting aggravated by running into it and/or tripping over it. You gals (Crystal) did a great job!

That loft bedroom is soooooo cosy. I love it. Just get a rechargeable light and a hook on the wall in case any guest wants to read a book.

You guys are incredible. The only thing I could think of is to build a couple handles out of that same metal on both sides so somebody can grab onto it when they’re coming into the little area or grab it when they’re getting on the ladder for more security.
Need small grab bars for the loft entry. Similar to the ones used in bathrooms. Might prevent a serious fall while climbing up, and down at the top of the loft. Great job girls!!

Bless you, Jasmine. Secret door, wow, I guess I missed that in the post of pictures. Beautiful. You might add some rubber strips to the bottom of the legs of the ladder. Just to keep them from sliding around when the latters in use. Love the idea of notching the ladder another foot down to hang it flat on the wall when not in use. Gave them a big thumbs up👍

If you duplicate the ladder hanging notches a bit further down you can hang the ladder so it lays flat against the wall when you don’t need it.

Beautiful ladder, really like the design with the metal bar. You could add similar metal bars on the top part of the ladder to hold on to when you climb. Two vertical bars on the left and right side.

Absolutely love this! It looks so good. I definitely agree about adding some type of safety rail up there so you can grab onto ladder going up or coming down, and a way of securely fastening it to the wall so it doesn't crash land on you or Izzy & Bella. Also with a railing, you could add/hook on a small shelf where you could keep a box of tissues, bottle of water, etc. for the night. Mom "speak" - I'd also not wear socks climbing a wood ladder because socks slip very easily, unless they have those traction thingies on the bottom; even bare feet would be much better. They make re-chargeable LED lights of all kinds now that would be so nice to have up there just in case someone has a midnight potty run. Enjoy!

Nicely done! Perfect way to make use of that space. Back in a former life my now-wife and I built a staircase up to a loft that had a landing with a pond as well as a built-in desk and wardrobe. But it all depends on the layout of the room.

@@river5756 We built this in a loft apartment in the Netherlands in 1994. I have a printed photograph, but even if I had it digital I couldn't share it here... Pine boards, black plastic tub for the pond, small waterfall, couple of plants.
You could add an addition to the back of house use the current bathroom as a hallway to a new larger bathroom and new bedroom

Just an idea for the stairs, but if you maybe make 20 cm lower some additional “hooks” you could put it plane against the wall to get it out of the way when your not using it 😊. Awesome work again, so awesome to see this cozy cabinets become even more cozy if that’s possible 😍.

You guys are awesome but as a woodworker and architect I have a couple suggestions. Over time that ladder is going split along the grain at the notch for the bar. And the screws in the treads will split that wood and pull out. You are loading the screws perpendicular to the screw, they have no strength in that direction. I recommend sandwiching the top with steel plates each side so the stringers don't split causing you to rebuild the whole thing. The treads should be supported with steel angles each side. Awesome loft!
