Subaru said”hanayome” which means bride. So the subtitles are wrong. He doesn’t said “my waifu”.
Listening through the dialogue, the terms used are:
- "hanayome", originally used by Regulus, consistently translated in subs as "bride"; according to Wiktionary strictly used to mean "bride"
- "tsuma", used by Regulus, translated in subs as "wife"; according to Wiktionary it can mean "spouse"/"wife"
- "[ore no] yome", used by Subaru, translated in subs as "[my] waifu"; according to Wiktionary it can mean "bride"/"wife"/"waifu or husbando"
When Subaru says strict "hanayome" it matches "bride" in subtitles, and the only phrase that gets translated as "waifu" is broader "yome". One may argue that "waifu" doesn't properly capture the intended meaning/tone of the scene, but at least - going by Wiktionary - it's one of perfectly applicable translations.
