- Today we're in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta, GA. I'm so excited to dive into Atlanta's thriving Asian food scene, and I'm starting with Filipino food. I'm pretty new to this cuisine, and after this trip to Estrellita Filipino, I'm hooked! The rich flavors of adobo and lechon kawali instantly converted me. The legendary Filipino BBQ technique is on full display in this Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant, drawing in hungry diners into the small dining room adorned in curated, brilliant Filipino art. Hope, the co-owner, taught us about the elements of Filipino cuisine. Her enthusiasm of teaching her customers about Filipino food is so evident and you can really feel the pride in everything they do at Estrellita.

When I woke up one morning and realized the beautiful, smart, 20-year old Filipina I married the day before didn't know how to cook American food I thought I was going to starve over the next few years until she could learn. She offered me a deal, in that she would cook Filipino food for a few days, and if I didn't like it, she would not cook it again. Seemed reasonable, so I agreed. Well, she cheated. She cooked pork adobo for me the first night. It was so delicious that I ate it all, and asked her to fix it again the next night. It was so addictive that for four days that was all I wanted for supper. I've since learned to eat and enjoy many more Filipino dishes over the past 50 years together with her. And we've spent five decades exploring the world's cuisines side-by-side in the kitchen. Our kids picked up on the love of cooking, and are now teaching our grandkids the love of not only the Filipino food they grew up with, but also many others.
Beautiful!
Such a beautiful story. 😊
What a beautiful story. One we can all learn from. I am so excited to know that this is just the beginning of a lifetime of enjoying and exploring Filipino food. There is just so much I want to try. I must visit soon! From what I've gathered, the people are so friendly and welcoming. I'm blown away by all the support after publishing this video. It is overwhelming. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful story. Truly inspiring.
AIN'T LOVE WONDERFUL ??😍😍😍
50 years? Amazing!❤
Did you know the Filipino foods is the best ? I am a Filipino Chef 😉😊🇵🇭♥️
It took me way too long to try Filipino food. The Philippines is right at the top of my travel list now. There are so many other Filipino foods I need to try!
Every time I watch "First time trying Filipino food" videos, I'm always sad when they don't eat it with rice. You did it right!
Aaaand she used a spoon (AAAAND she used it to cut the meat) instead of a fork! 😁
@@JustiisLeagueYou are so right❤
@@JustiisLeagueYou are so right❤
people have the right to eat the food however they want, it doesn't have to be your way.
It's all about not wasting your food
I LOVE FILIPINO FOOD. I'VE LEARNED HOW TO MAKE MANY DISHES AND DESSERTS AND IT IS MY FAVORITE CUISINE.
THIS SISTA' WILL WORK FOR PANCIT, LECHON KAWALI, KARE KARE, SINIGANG AND PEANUT TURON AND A MULTITUDE OF OTHER FILIPINO CUISINE😂. FILIPINO PEOPLE ARE SO GENEROUS AND HAVE THE BIGGEST HEARTS IN THE WORLD...AND THEY ALWAYS WANT TO FEED YOU.
I LOVE Y'ALL.
BEAUTIFUL.
Seriously I cannot believe it took this long to have Filipino food. Now I can't wait to visit! Thanks watching :)
Calderetta and Mechado too😱❤
I cackled on the "they always want to feed you" 😂 it's the truest ever...u go to a Filipino party and you say you're full...nah, they won't stop offering food until you give in 😂
Filipinos are so proud of their food that when you visit a house on a festivities, they will tell you theirs is the best among the rest.
The sauce for the lechon kawali is a liver sauce. The sweetness usually comes from the type of vinegar we use. Its a coconut vinegar.
All the love you from all of us... 🥰🥰🥰Thanks for giving so nice reactions on these Filipino dishes.. 😘😘😘
So glad you used a spoon for the rice 😂
This video blow up in just 2 weeks 😅 just in case you're curious why, it's because there's loads of Filipinos living abroad and misses home big time, and we love watching anything about home. 🇵🇭😋 watching here in the UK
Instantly one if my favorite foods. There's so much I still have to try. And I'm definitely planning a to the Philippines soon!
It has been over 25 years since I have been in ATL and I am so happy to see a proper Filipino restaurant! Thanks for featuring this.
When you took the rice and added it to the adobo juices at the bottom of the bowl, I said out loud, “YES girl! You’re doing it right!” Proud Filipina here loving how much you appreciate and are enjoying Filipino cuisine. Those dishes literally had my mouth watering. Love how you describe the foods and its flavors. Subscribing!
It just seemed so right to use the spoon! :) thanks so much for subscribing!
Asus
nice.. this is how us filos do this.
I immigrated to the US in the summer of 1990. I was 9 yrs old and starting in the 4th grade. Our other family members that were already here tried their best to let us know of the many social norms, the do's and dont's, but they failed to explain to me that bringing lunch from home was a "no-no" especially if you're bringing something exotic like Filipino food. Well on my 1st day, my Mom had prepared pork adobo over rice for my lunch and I still remember seeing the disgust reaction from my classmates faces when I opened my lunchbox aka Tupperware. Eh, you can say we were just kids back then, but it was the last time I ever brought food from home to eat at school, middle school, high school, college and I still hesitate to bring home food to work. Your reaction to tasting Filipino food is helping ease that childhood pain in me. Thank you.
Every asian kid that came to America in the 80s experience. Same here.
Weird...what s so wrong in bringing Home cooked Food?...its more safe n delicious..likewise its culturally correct n respectful with one s identity!..
That's such a faulty cultural norm: there is nothing wrong anywhere else in the world to bringing home-cooked meals to school or the workplace. Anybody who disapproves can instead just buy my lunch or they can suck it.
Thank you for sharing your story. I must say you have nothing to ever hesitate about when it comes to your Filipino culture. In fact, you should be very proud. I cannot believe it took me this long to discover the wonderful world of Filipino cuisine. I really want to visit there soon!
That's such a weird crowd of classmates you had. I see American shows/movies with American kids exchanging lunch items that they brought from home.
The way you devoured all that food is so filipino, i mean im not even 100% convinced that it is your 1st time trying filipino food at all, the way you ate the bbq and adobo is so pro(dipped the rice in the spicy vinegar and ate it with the bbq chicken)❤❤
It's nice that they are serving food like how Filipinos would, with fork and spoon, intead of a fork and knife.
you can never go wrong with pork adobo and add some lechon kawali with it, YUMMY! mabuhay ang filipino food.
So good! Seriously one of my favorite foods now. And I want to go to the Filipines soon!
@@whatomorrowbrings it's "The Philippines" actually 😅
YESSSSS....
AND DON'T FORGET DESSERT🥰
@whattomorrowbrings Try Pork Sisig and Kare Kare when your coming to the Philippines. ❤🥰
hunnie, that putting and pressing of rice on the leftover sauce in the bowl 9:37 is very much Filipino 😆
thanks for appreciating our stuff... warm regards from Manila, Philippines! ❤
It just came so natural! Thanks so much for watching and I plan to visit the Philippines soon!
looks legit. nice to see authentic cuisine of filipino food. no fusion or whatsoever.
This is by the design and pride of the Chef. Thank you for noticing!
So nice that you mixed the rice it the bowl with left over adobo sauce and adding the lechon, it's actually very Filipino. Left-over adobo sauce mixed with rice is already a meal in itself. :)
Sabaw pa pa lang, ulam na! 👍🏼
Everything looks perfectly cooked that I could taste how good it is. Compliments to the chef.
Aws that is how Filipino eat, you nailed it❤watching from 🇵🇭
I love it when you put the rice and lechon kawali in the adobo bowl. ❤❤❤ that’s how I eat !
that's how i do it too. or when the pot is done, i my rice in it
If I'm on deathrow or my deathbed, I'd still choose Filipino food for my last meals. Especially the pork dishes! Yum. That'd be a very satisfying way to go 😋😋😋😋😋😋 sarap!!
9:52 - Exactly how a Filipino would do with the remainder of the Adobo Sarsa! Masarap!
You're eating the food correctly!! 🥺 So many people try Filipino food without rice and it's drastically different if you eat the 'Ulam' or dish on it's own. The rice just takes the edge off.
Very authentic when you put rice and lechon kawali pork in the bowl with little sauce in it,and that's the high light of the taste 😀 and traditional,no doubt that's the best part, I 💕 it. Keep in mind we do that only at home 😂😊...
Love my Filipino food. My mouth is watering watching you eat…so good!!!!
I can't believe it took me this long to try it. I'm so happy that the Filipino food scene is growing here in Atlanta. But now I'm thinking I definitely have to go visit the Filipines soon! Thsnk you for watching and your support.
Oh my gosh, I’m salivating right now. You go girl, thank you for appreciating the Filipino food.
So much to appreciate. I need to go to the Philippines!
Try Sinigang, Kare Kare and Crispy pata and some Shanghai Rolls and Pansit
yes! crispy pata
try salty filipino tarugo
YESSSSSSSSS !!!!
Try some Turon and/or Halo Halo for dessert next time!
At first glance, I thought you were this French/Filipino vlogger ‘HeyoLeah’. You looked a lot like her, but the accent is a dead giveaway. 🤗🤗🤗
I love adobo & lechon.
Thank you for loving and showing to the world the Filipino cuisine. Every region in the Philippines has its own distinct taste....surely you'll want to taste them! Cheers....❤😊
I was smiling as I watched you enjoying the Filipino food.
The Lechon Kawali needs more frying to give the skin that golden brown color and crispy, crunchy, crackling texture when you bite into it. It comes with a tangy and sweet liver sauce.
I must say that the Pork Adobo looks really good. You can tell that the meat has absorbed the sauce pretty well to make it flavorful and that it has been cooked to tender perfection.
OMG! i couldn't even that much rice like you did and i am a filipina.
Thats how u do it.u are a natural filipina
yup, and Filipino mukbang videos will always give you a high views as always.
Beer and barbecue, perfect combo plus adobo😊
You make it all look so good! You’re a talented eater
I really like the fact that you eat it with spoon. Thank you.
Well, you have just opened the Filipino dishes at it's best. There's so much more to try. Thank you for loving our food ❤🇵🇭
As a Filipino Asian American, I have to got to say thank you for highlighting Filipino food; and enjoying it!! I’d love another episode into it, there is some things you missed or maybe they didn’t have; and I’d love a look into our Filipino fast food!! I just found your channel, and I’m amazed by you pronouncing the Filipino foods; I’m curious on your cultural background?
And you know Filipinos are Asians right? Just type of Filipino American or Asian American.
You go girl!! I'm glad you enjoy our cuisine and enjoy it the way we do!
Dang! You're eating Filipino foods in the right way, where did you learn that? Next time try the bodle fight foods with your friends, you will love it.
Subscribed. Came across with your channel and I'm amazed as you described our food/culture. You can never go wrong with Filipino food. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Girl in Hawaii we say “ you can pound.” Hawaiians and locals can pound.
My father made the best adobo but then everyone’s parents make the best adobo.
Dad was born in 1887 so no shoyu and when he got done it was roasted brown all over after the reduction with the right amount of vinegar, salt, bay leaves and garlic. I don’t know if it’s Visayan Style as he was Visayan-adobo not soupy but roasted 🌺
Man you are making hungry. It is very nostalgic enjoy. I hope you can try the Kare- kare! So many array of Filipino dishes!
I look forward to trying it in the Philippines soon! Thanks
I just love watching you eat and ENJOY the Filipino delicacies❤❤❤
New subscriber here from🇦🇺thanks for appreciating our filipino food.much love❤️🇵🇭
Very easy to love this food. I want to visit. The Filipines now!
Saw the adobo at the start and was happy that the look of it was correct. Somehow, I knew it would be tasty that my mouth instantly started to water on reflex and started craving for it over the fried chicken I was eating for dinner.
this is the first time I've seen your videos and omg you remind me if Mark Wiens! you're like his female version! not sure if it's a compliment to you or not but that's who I'm reminded with watching this video. 😅
wow, i can't believe you've devoured all that
You nailed it gurl👏👏👏
Wow i cant wait you to visit philippines and try street food here
Amazing review and vid!! I was salavating. Everything looked home cooked!
Thanks so much!!
You got it just the way we eat adobo down to the last sauce. Next try the sisig, pansit, sinigang na baboy, fried boneless bangus, the hot spicy bicol express and many more.
Good that you like such food! Overall, Filipino food is a combination of Spanish, Mexican, Chinese, Indonesian and American food,
San Francisco native and world traveler here! I ate Filipino food from Vancouver to San Diego to Boston. Eating Filipino food in The Philippines is quite another experience!
It really is a whole other world of food I'm excited to keep learning about. I'm considering a trip there very soon.
Watching this in the middle of the night with so much cravings going on in my mind due to my upcoming period…. makes me salivating and wishing I’m there eating with you. 🤤😭♥️

Yes! I'm craving more Filipino good already
New subscriber from Philippines 🇵🇭
new Sub from PH :) Keep going!!!! Goodluck!!!
Its yummy 😋😋 iknow that because im Filipino 😊😊😊
For me, Chicken Pork Adobo is the best. The taste is so awesome that I eat it several times every month.
I can see why. I'm due for some more adobo. I'll have to try your suggestion with the chicken. Thanks!
Killer combo. 😋😋
You'll need to learn how to use the spoon and fork Filipino-style: Use both hands and use the fork to spear the food chunks or to place the grains onto the spoon. Hold down the bigger chunks of food with the fork and then use the edge of the spoon to slice the food into smaller portions; this means that you won't need a knife most of the time. If you don't learn the two handed style, it will take you much longer to eat.
As for a Filipino who is sensitive to rice, this video made me crave our dishes even more. Thank you for eating our dish so deliciously. Maybe next time you can try the HALO-HALO. It's a dessert which means mix-mix. So you are supposed to mix it all together thoroughly before eating it. I'm sure you're gonna love it.
Halo-Halo sounds like something I'll really enjoy. Thanks for the suggestion 🫶
Good call in sopping up that adobo sauce with the rice and Lechon Kawali..so Pilipino!! 😁
Yipeeeee! I’m filipino!
I sub because you like lechong kawali.LOL. You miss the Lumpia and sisig. Filipino food is very underrated, but it is slowly crawling to be known in the mainstream.
I have a 1st cousin who lives in Atlanta
Wow! You did pick the old favorites so I wasn't surprised that you liked them... you can explore some more and next time, try the pork barbecue which is even better than the chicken barbecue. If it's raining, you should try (if they have it) the Pork SInigang and maybe the Beef Kare-Kare... by the way, the Pork Adobo is originally Filipino but the original Adobo didn't have soy sauce which was added later when Soy Sauce (came from China) was introduced in the Philippines. The original was cooked with very little vinegar, whole black pepper, and bay leaves.
I will definitely check out that Filipino restaurant when I go to Atlanta. Thanks for featuring that restaurant!
I always wonder What Tommorrow Brings.
Woow it's proud you love it Filipino food
Rice is Life!!! 😊❤❤❤
One of your Subcriber from Philppines👍🇵🇭👍
Appreciate the support 👍
Try the Diniguan (pork’s blood) with rice that’s really good
We use beef blood. It makes the dinuguan creamier and doesn’t have that iron taste in the blood. ❤
Oh wow I definitely need to try. Hoping to visit the Philippines soon.
Makes me hungry😮😊❤
You ate it like how we would eat it❤
the jerky at the end...is it TAPA??if it is then i'll be damned...thats my favorite
My name is Estelits, I came across your vlog, I'm your new subscriber
Welcome!!
Mixing the rice with the adobo oil is very Filipino! 💯💯💯
So good!
You deviured that!
