I've discovered plenty of jems that became favorites on your recommendations. Thanks. And I will always watch your videos
@@artvandelay1967 House of Games may not currently be streaming for free. But you could make a whole list out of just underrated Mamet flicks. American Buffalo, Redbelt, Heist....the list goes on.
House of Games is the precursor to The Spanish Prisoner. Ricky Jay made his knowledge and presence known and helpful in both of these. He is also one of my favorite character actors. Heist is also food for this. The Hunt made me cry.
"24 Hour Party People" is not a mockumentary. It's more of a dramatized documentary. The people and bands and places were real. It even has appearances by some of the ACTUAL musicians from the music scene depicted in the movie. Anyway, surprised you included it on this list and happy to see it promoted. Great movie.
I came here to say same thing. Documents real people & bands (Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays) who all came out of the Hacienda Club in early 1980's Manchester England. Filmed in a very unique way. Love this movie. Tony Wilson has a great line about how Rave Culture started there - "the beautification of the beat". Great soundtrack too. Worth watching just to see how Factory Records and it's oddball agreement with its bands lead to New Order financing the club, label and other bands.
It’s not a mockumentary, it’s not about “party culture” but Manchester music, and Coogan wasn’t playing a “buffoon reporter” but rather a Cambridge-educated music maverick whose signed some of most influential bands of all-time. Did dude even watch this movie?
Yes! and the Manchester Punk scene starting in 1976 that resulted in the formation of Factory records, a major part of the plot, plus it is a true story done in a satirical fashion by the great director, Michael Winterbottom.
Excellent FLICK CONNECTION Darren. Great to see Starred Up as your #1. Many thanks for sharing with us, much appreciated. Regards to you, family and Peanut 👍👍👍
Timecrimes is easily one of the best independent sci-fi movies ever. Absolutely brilliant when it came to the time travelling. Was not muddy or muddled. Easy to follow, but intelligent at the same time. A must watch.
It was fantastic. The only frustrating part was that the protagonist refused to understand what was happening, even though he was literally seeing it. Anyhow, if you're fine reading subtitles, "Wild Tales" is exceptional as well. It's a series of short stories, but they're pretty awesome.
I want to add one to your list: David Rosenthal's A Single Shot (2013). Sam Rockwell leads with Jason Isaacs, Bill Macy, Ted Levine, and Joe Anderson. This film features Jeffrey Wright's greatest performance, and I'd say Atli Örvarsson's best score. A truly haunting film.
Love, love, love Timecrimes! One the absolute best time travel movies ever. I've thought about learning Spanish just to be able to appreciate it even more.
Awesome to see you mention 24hr Party People, just a heads up it's not really a mockumentary it's actually loose based on the real life of Tony Wilson a pioneer television presenter who promoted bands around the Manchester area, the 'Factory Recors' label which managed acts such as Happy Mondays, A Certain Ratio, New Order (the former Joy Division) etc. and eventually (with the help of the along with members of Joy Division/New Order) set up the legendary Hacienda night club which was really the mecca for the dance/rave culture in the UK in the late 80s/early 90s. So yeah just a bit of context that all the story with the music/bands was real it was just an embelshiment of the story/character in certain parts with majority still being reasonably factually correct.
Tony Wilson the tv presenter played by actor Steve Coogan in ‘24hr party people’ was definitely not “a buffoon”. He started Factory Records opened and managed the The Hacienda Club, he also had a very long career as a tv presenter who championed alternative and regional culture and was responsible for booking The Sex Pistols for their first tv appearance on a show he hosted. Sometimes referred to as Mr Manchester.
…And the movie is not a “mockumentary” as the music, the bands, the people, and stories are pretty much true. Sure, some of it is “legend”, rather than absolute fact, but it’s certainly not “This is Spinal Tap”. This movie uses comedy as a vehicle to get its story across, but it’s not making fun of rock documentaries or music. For anyone who doesn’t know this story or these artists, I highly recommend going back and listening to Joy Division, New Order, and the Happy Mondays.
Wow. Someone thought 24hr PP was actually fictional, not a biopic. I guess if you're not aware of those bands and those people you could not realise it's based actual people. Saw the HM's play last year - good show.

I got one of the shirts last week. Great product. Fits well, nice material. First thing I bought this month that wasn't disappointing. You have excellent taste my friend.
I’ve been subbed for a few years and I honestly thought this was a genre that wouldn’t last. But you’re doing great, my guy. Movies jumping from platform to platform needed someone like you.
For my personal tastes, this is one of the best top 10 list I’ve seen. Great variety of styles and genres. Just subbed, so keep up the great content! 😅
"No Way Out" is what catapulted Kevin Kostner to a leading man. I remember the actual Siskel (sp?) & Ebert and everyone else just enamored with his unflappable persona.
24 hour party people is semi biographical. It's based on Factory records, Steve coogan is playing a real person, Tony Wilson, and it's based on true stories, the Happy Mondays, New Order etc.
Great list. Count me as a new subscriber. Seen 8 of the 11 movies and couldn't agree more how good they are. Definitely plan to check out the 3 I've never heard of. Seems like these are all types of movies that don't get made anymore. Even the Costner one.
I know most of these movies but never got around to watching them, apart from Starred Up, The Proposition an 24h Party People. Since these three are in this list and are truly gems, I GOT to watch the rest of them. Thanks!
@@DarrenVanDamchopper wasn't eric bana's first film, the castle was. IMO it's one of the funniest films ever made - it's iconic here in australia * twenty four hour party people was events in the 80's, not 90's * rotten tomatoes sucks and everyone knows it, it's best not mentioned on youtube
24 Hour Party People was specifically about Factory Records, and its roll in the birth of and turn from No Wave (Joy Division, etc) to the eventual birth of the Madchester scene. You weren't wrong in your description, but anyone familiar with the things I just mentioned will understand the movie a whole lot better if they understand what it's actually about before they see it. The highway lines after rails and rails was something I remember from first seeing the movie ~20 years ago, and the soundtrack is amazing. It does a great job of capturing the spirit of the whole thing IMO.
Spanish Prisoner warning for those unfamiliar with Mamet's directorial work: he directs actors as one would for a play. The line readings will be terse and wooden, but if you can roll with that its a very good movie. And the ending is unintentionally hilarious. Just be open minded and forgiving, and you'll have a good time one qay or another.
The Proposition soundtrack from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis is as good as it gets... and with Cave having written the screenplay, it just goes to show what a powerful trio those three make when it comes to Westerns. Hillcoat would go on to direct Triple 9 (Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson), as well as the Prohibition-era movie Lawless (Tom Hardy, 2012) and then he even did some work with the best video game franchise in the history of the universe - Red Dead Redemption. Hillcoat, Cave, and Ellis would reunite for the post-apocalyptic Western, The Road (Viggo Mortensen, 2009). Cave and Ellis would go on to compose one of the greatest soundtracks to one of the greatest movies ever created... The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Cave popping in with the cameo at the end). When it comes to the history of Westerns, these three have not only left their mark thus far, but they've helped to shape the direction and quality that lies ahead.
Thx for your recommendations. I've previously seen most of these, but straight away took your advice and watched The Hunt/Jagten. It is indeed a gripping and well directed film. BTW, you regularly comment that films may be less appealing "because of subtitles". Most of your viewers who live outside the US are multi-lingual so can follow conversation in some European languages, at least.
I think this video is the best idea to include the RT ratings , what might also be interesting is to find hidden gems that maybe didn’t have great critic ratings but did have very high audience ratings , great idea here
24 Hour Party People is a Biopic about Tony Wilson spanning 70s-90s and the British celebrities involvement with in Punk, Rave, and music culture in general. Excellent mockumentary biopic.
I remember renting Timecrimes and another of my favorite time travel movies (Triangle 2009) from Blockbuster way back when. Those 2 movies solidified my love for time travel movies.
Transaiberian is terrific. Great cast and fun plot. Highly rewatchable as well. No Way Out also deserves its high rating. I haven't seen any of the others, including Mud. Thanks for adding some new movies to my watch lists!
I feel like I'm the only person that wasn't crazy about Transsiberian. I love Woody Harrelson, but I hated him in this, and thought he ruined the movie.
@daniels1485 I actually get what you're saying. It wasn't Harrelson's best role. I like him too. I thought the plot and locations were fun and I'm a Mortimer and Mara fan.
I'm so excited that "24 Hour Party People" made the list. For me, that's the one I'd put at the tippy top as I find it to be REMARKABLY underrated...or, at least, under appreciated! A must-see for any fans of Steve Coogan, punk and post-punk new wave with the parts that are actually true from the movie being the most unbelievable.
Just finished watching Transsiberian at your recommendation. Holy mackerel! Slow burn and then it gallops! Thanks for the recommendation! Outstanding film!
"Starred Up" is easily my favourite movie of all time. In fact, it's the only movie I have watched more than twice. If you like it, I can also recommend "A Prayer Before Dawn", and the original "Animal Kingdom" movie out of Australia. These are not family movies, just quietly.
I liked your video! Good on ya mate! But at 2:30 you say "the best western created in the 21st century so far" is The Proposition. Nope sorry that title goes to Hell or High water with out question. The 2nd place finish would be No Country for Old Men. Only receiving a 2nd place finish because the Coen brothers break the mold and it's not by formula a western. I know some people think it's a neo western but I don't think that fits either. But I digress. It still is a western to me and it gets 2nd place. The proposition can have 3rd place if you fancy it. I like your videos and I love getting new recommendations from people who care about movies. Keep doing what you do. Cheers Mate.
@DarrenVanDam - Eric Bana - The Castle 1997. His first movie and not an 'unknown' title. It was a cult classic, if only down under. He was also in Aussie TV shows for 7 years before doing Chopper.
I do love your videos minus the ads most annoying is breakfast cereal. Maybe an explanation of Rotten tomatoes and how it works. I never know is more good or bad ? Most of the time I agree with you and not them Thanks from Cool Calif where it is over 100 today
A hidden gem director who has almost all highly rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes is Joel Potrykus. The outlier is his latest movie, Relaxer which only has 68%.
I definitely have watched a lot of movies as these were standard movies for me growing up. I didn’t think they were hidden just thought I was old lol. But to add to this list I would say 1 wild tales 2 Lars and the real girl 3 run Lola run 4 zola 5 compliance 6 the celebration 7 smile orange 8 kids 9 white god 10 coherence

Seems like these are all types of movies that don't get made anymore. Even the Costner one.
you really do good work. spot on. keep it up! thank you
Saw Chopper years ago and loved it🎥😍!! Thanks for reminding me - time to see it again👍😎!!
I know most of these movies but never got around to watching them, apart from Starred Up, The Proposition an 24h Party People. Since these three are in this list and are truly gems, I GOT to watch the rest of them. Thanks!
The Proposition top 5 all time western. It has everything
The Proposition is EPIC
I enjoyed Chopper, years ago.
No Way Out is one of my favorite spy movies. What a great plot twist!
Mud was fun too.
Had to watch chopper twice, loved it
... and I can't even spell. I'm practically bloody illiterate!
@@DarrenVanDamchopper wasn't eric bana's first film, the castle was. IMO it's one of the funniest films ever made - it's iconic here in australia
* twenty four hour party people was events in the 80's, not 90's
* rotten tomatoes sucks and everyone knows it, it's best not mentioned on youtube
Been catching up and post appreciated Sir awesome 🙌🏾👏🏼🤘🏼
24 Hour Party People was specifically about Factory Records, and its roll in the birth of and turn from No Wave (Joy Division, etc) to the eventual birth of the Madchester scene. You weren't wrong in your description, but anyone familiar with the things I just mentioned will understand the movie a whole lot better if they understand what it's actually about before they see it.
The highway lines after rails and rails was something I remember from first seeing the movie ~20 years ago, and the soundtrack is amazing. It does a great job of capturing the spirit of the whole thing IMO.
Great job, Darren, a couple of movies here I'll be tracking down.
“The Spanish Prisoner” is phenomenal, Steve Martin like you have never seen him.
Saw The Hunt at TIFF and Thomas Winterberg was there. It is amazing!
darinruest. Thats great. Lucky you.
You should do these in YOUR order. Great pics and commentary.
Thanks for the flick tips DVD!
It’s well worth noting that The Proposition was written by Nick Cave, of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
Really?? That’s interesting.
Timecrimes is great. It's what made me realize that foreign movies shouldn't just be written off because I didn't like reading subtitles.
Dumb ppl have that mentality
Check out a movie called Intacto
Thanks for the insight on these movies!
Great list!
I think this video is the best idea to include the RT ratings , what might also be interesting is to find hidden gems that maybe didn’t have great critic ratings but did have very high audience ratings , great idea here
So happy to see you include Mud on the list. Love that movie. I keep trying to get friends to watch it and they just don't give it a chance.
24 Hour Party People is a Biopic about Tony Wilson spanning 70s-90s and the British celebrities involvement with in Punk, Rave, and music culture in general. Excellent mockumentary biopic.
Agree totally about "Starred Up". A great movie with a powerfull performance from Jack O'Connell
I remember renting Timecrimes and another of my favorite time travel movies (Triangle 2009) from Blockbuster way back when. Those 2 movies solidified my love for time travel movies.
Some great picks here. I thought Time Crimes was actually very funny. A comedy of errors
I saw No Way Out way back in when it came out. Great flick! Sean Young is smokin’ hot!!!
Chopper, The Proposition and 24 Hour Party People? Fantastic list with truly and criminally underrated movies. 💯 agree
Wasn't Rotten Tomatoes rating system exposed when they lied about the Captain Marvel film?
Good ones. I watched Transsiberian and The Hunt based on your earlier recommendations.
Loved Spanish Prisoner. Thanks Darren
Steve coogan plays a real life music industry hero called Tony Wilson.
I loved the Spanish prisoner and Steve Martin as a villain. I wish he played more roles like that.
Back when Gary Condit was going through all that trouble with his missing intern, it reminded me of that Costner film No Way Out.
Rented Time Crimes on a whim back in the day. I LOVED IT!
The Screenplay for the Proposition was written by Nick Cave if you need another reason to watch it besides it being one of the best modern westerns
Thanks for some great recommendations
The Acolyte drama was a learning experience for me. I prefer your rating on things not someone else's.
Time Crimes is great! It way, way exceeded my expectations.
I do love your videos minus the ads most annoying is breakfast cereal. Maybe an explanation of Rotten tomatoes and how it works. I never know is more good or bad ? Most of the time I agree with you and not them Thanks from Cool Calif where it is over 100 today
I am not trying to sound like a jerk, but you don't know if a higher score is good or bad?
LOVED no way out from the very moment i saw it.
A hidden gem director who has almost all highly rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes is Joel Potrykus. The outlier is his latest movie, Relaxer which only has 68%.
Jo Nesbo's Headhunters is great. One of my favorite authors, but I didn't watch the movie for a long time because of subtitles.
"Mud" is on Apple TV here in Australia.
What's the story behind the "rotten tomatoes" plug?
Just finished watching Headhunters. It is a freaking hoot!
Awesome job my dude
Time Crimes is amazing.
love this channel.
THANKS
1st again!
great list of films. everyone a banger
..and yes, Chopper does deserve more love
I think of the Proposition as being the movie with the Nick Cave soundtrack.
I was surprised to see Nick Cave wrote The Proposition.
24 hrs parry people isn't a mockumentary, he plays a real reporter and it tells the true story of factory records and manchester in the 80's 90's
Great video
I definitely have watched a lot of movies as these were standard movies for me growing up.
I didn’t think they were hidden just thought I was old lol.
But to add to this list I would say
1 wild tales
2 Lars and the real girl
3 run Lola run
4 zola
5 compliance
6 the celebration
7 smile orange
8 kids
9 white god
10 coherence
No Way Out is currently on PLUTO TV as well as
Thanks for that tip! I'm gonna rewatch it now. Great 80's political thriller, back when Costner was cool (Bull Durham, NWO, etc).
Saw time crimes years ago. Love it!
Rotten Tomatoes score? I would much prefer to see things through your eyes not theirs.
You always do. I was just surprised how many highly reviewed movies they have. Plus, any one of these could have topped a typical list on the channel.
@@DarrenVanDam I agree with TheCultofVR comment . btw loved Headhunters , great dubbing too. Thanks
