The elves screwed up. Strictly speaking, to quote Stephen Fry, the phrase 'chariots of fire' comes from the Bible in 2 Kings 2:11 "As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind." And in 2 Kings 6:17-20 'And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord , so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.'
