- There’s a curious theory that emerges whenever the ongoing Red Bull and Honda engine collaboration or a possible 2026 project become a talking point in Formula 1.
This conspiracy essentially contends that Red Bull and Honda have gamed the system by getting an engine freeze agreed under false pretences, and are either reaping the rewards now or will benefit later.
To buy into this, though, you need to believe that Honda never really intended to leave F1 and never actually left.

It's simple, Honda changed CEO, so the new CEO decides to stay in F1 and overruled old CEO's decision
Of course this reasoning won't be enough for the rabid Mercedes and Hamilton fans even though this is the most obvious answer.

Besides, the withdrawal of Honda made Red Bull to invest heavily in its Powetrains division. Abandon this project and return to the previous status of being a full works Honda engine team without a massive blow to the Milton Keynes based was at that point impossible.
Who saw second Brawn GP fiasco as that team now is Mercedes F1
Honda is still involved in Dakar, Moto GP, Indy, and Super Formula. The old CEOs decision to leave F1 was just odd in regards to their environmental EV whatever claims.
Not as weird as it sounds with your rationale; they wanted the engineers for other projects, which the other series you mentioned don’t conflict with
Honda wanted to leave F1 because it was more expensive then they were making returns. The profits for being involved in F1 are now ten times higher then in 2021. That's why they're coming back. In 2020, F1 was a very expensive money pit that burnt tens of millions a year for Honda and did nothing for them; F1 in 2022 is now actually profitable. It's as simple as that. It was a dying sport 2 years ago and now it's immensely profitable.
That’s because of a mix of emissions, costs and the US Honda branch being run separately. Moto GP costs considerably less and the emissions are too far less. Indy and Dakar from what I can tell are run by American Honda, technically a different division. But basically the cost and personal for F1s hybrid tech was being moved across to EV teams until the new CEO wanted back in
He probably just saw a spreadsheet and compared money spent and saw F1 as their biggest budget loss so decided to end it. I'm pretty sure they don't spend too much money developing engines for other categories
Keep in mind that Honda North America (HPD) is not the same as Honda Japan. Honda JP manages the F1 part.

And just to mention that too, the MP4/8 chassis in 1993 was probably as good or nearly as good as the FW15c, truly splendid. Just lacking a proper engine, as proved by the white McLaren tested by Senna & Häkkinen with a Lambo engine. Had Honda continued, after having its investments in which it investing in a changed architecture (1989-90: V10, 1991-92: V12 ?!), Prost might've had a worthy challenge ahead of him that year, and Honda another WDC title (but not constructors, because Andretti).
Rules are being simplified and can have the current stuff as a base. I doubt anyone will be far off, even Audi could be close if they can carry any LMP1H experience into this (power level is very close to LMP1H cars at least).
Can be simplified by RB being winners at the same time as F1 viewership increasing a lot. Would be crazy for Honda to not try to get some branding back

Red Bull brand is also somewhat important here. When you associate with Red Bull in case of winning is Red Bull all credited for it and you don't get too much exposure. In case of losing you assume all your responsibility in it... and Helmut and Christian will make people aware of that.

No, it was because Honda was already doing the engine while they weren't supposed to. And since RB was winning they though they should get some branding back.
PR wise F1 doesn't do much, which is why they didn't care. But since they were already doing the work, they might as well change the original branding deal as qell.

The new team controversy has already started. Some sites claim that Ferrari has not signed up for the 2026 engines because RBPT are currently considered a new entry and they even missed one of the initial meetings regarding the technical regulations because of that.

I think maybe Honda might enter a factory team too if conditions are right in 2026. Seeing the success from it's partnership with RBPT, it would at least keep the company interested in another shot in F1 as a factory team.

Well Honda messed up, so Red Bull had to make the most out of nothing to survive. If they gain a strong advantage in the end, it is not their fault as they could also slump back severely.
I wish/hope RBR and Honda were actually that good to pull off a deception of this magnitude.

I’d like to see Honda come back on their own
As mentioned in the video the power unit is split into 2 parts - The hybrid electric system and the combustion engine with both companies saving money in a co-lab and a lot easier to sell to the HONDA board of directors plus just working on the electric system is the future of there car company and is relevant to there road car division technology.
If Honda was to enter as a full team again ( i doubt this ) they would just lease alpha Tauri from Red Bull or buy it on the condition they sell it back to Red BULL and use HONDA RBPT engines.
It's Brawn GP all over again. Honda spent a lot and left F1, only for the team with a different engine to become champs, but the car development was mostly Honda's.
After the disastrous return of the engine - and a repeat of the global financial situation - they decided to leave again, but once burned, decided to keep a foot in the door in case things changed back in their favour. All of that was done under the auspices of saving face by assisting Red Bull who would be engineless because of Honda's decision.
It does help a lot that RB was a much more pleasant partner than Mclaren. Its certainly easier to justify an amicable split given the pleasant relationship and the results that have come from that relationship.

I think as you say everything has been what it is on the surface, Chaos and U Turns.
The engine freeze was always coming, Ferrari made a massive push for it, Merc were complacent and got caught with their pants down.
The bit that doesn't sit right with me is using a Honda engine with Honda assistance and claiming to be a new entry for 2026. I can see both sides of the argument and love the operating in the grey area (why I love F1) but do feel the mental gymnastics are a stretch to be classified as a new entry. Can't wait to see this play out

Yes it resulted in great reliability but even with the engine turned up Red Bull has surpassed them and Ferrari are there abouts performance wise.
It has been noted too that the last couple of seasons the power unit has remain fairly stagnant with only a handful of minor changes at best because they were so far Infront.
They made huge changes for the E10 and it sounds like the loss of power caught them by surprise resulting in heavy redesign. The choice of words strongly hints at them saving face because they were very much caught with their pants down
Yes Merc have done a phenomenal job but they have said it themselves that they were caught out by quite a few things and have been complacent. Again doing a phenomenal job in the first place allowed that but things are tighter than Merc would have liked going into the engine freeze and they allowed it to happen
@@Javadamutt i agree that they are relatively on the back foot but i disagree with the pants down situation. in mercs most recent sit down they also said they were conservative with the tuning and were able to get even more out of the engine by the end of the year, and also had to stop the full potential because the porpoising and bouncing were causing physical damage to the engines.
I bet the 'FIA' will implement some kind of rule past the deadline again which will cripple the rbpt efforts somewhat.
Yes, the engine freeze was coming… because RB used their patented "take my 2 teams out of the pram" card to force it and get it accelerated, to coincide with the delivery of their upgrades and lock their improvements in.
At least one thing is for sure, Honda always leaves F1 in the worst possible moment for them.

Red Bull being Red Bull these shenanigans are not surprising. Being a privateer and underdog you have to play these games to beat the powerful works teams. Some might say it's below the belt, but I have a bridge to sell them.
I bought a Honda motorcycle due they winning the Championchip, so marketing works :)

I find it strange that pretty much everyone else is saying that RBR have pulled a fast one and have been allowed to dev their ICE/PU despite there being an engine dev freeze. That's not ME saying that, but others have been talking about it since we found out that honda were staying.
As for whether they should be allowed to call their 2026 rbpt new, sure, so long as honda aren't involved. If they (rbr) retain honda as part of their package for 26 and onwards, it would be a huge kick in the nuts for all the other 9 [currently] teams.

I just thought that it was a creative way to play the cost cap rules, that there was a greater advantage to saying you were developing your own engines than being a customer, maybe with money being moved around operations to provide a more flexible setup

If you developing your engine from zero you would cost so much money than being a customer.. So even if it's included in the current cost cap rule, it's not creative, it's an idiotic way to play the cost cap rules..
From the beginning of the season it was clear that The engine is still HRC's engine and Redbull Powertrains is not more than a badge branding name like Tag Heuer back then.. So no one except you believe Redbull develop their own engine in house for 2022 to 2025..
And yes Redbull Powertrains projects is to Design 2026 engine specifications not the current engine
@@cosminlesutan3574 That's because the dispensation is there for new manufacturers -not new engines- who have never built an F1 PU before and wouldn't be able to know how to make it last a full season until it actually hit the track; that way they're not stuck trying to catch up for a decade, if at all. This was intended for manufacturers like Audi and Porsche… RBPT is just the rebadged Honda PU operation.
It was a simple ceo change, the old one wanted to focus on electric cars and the new guy likes and wants to be in f1, 2 different people wanted to do 2 different things, its not that deep
Honda have been building a new engine while theyve not been an engine supplier and as such havent been banned from developing last years engine which they'd no doubt have used as a starting point.
Honda come back next year, new engine for Red Bull.. Everyone else adhering to the dev ban is on their 2022 spec engines.

The most important thing about the deal with Porsche, is on the hybrid system. Porsche own Rimac, and Rimac hybrid engineering alone can create huge difference.
Not sure why the desperation to discredit any suspicion of RB foul play. Let's see how it plays out. It's okay to criticize RB when they misbehave.

Rumors and made up stories which some people choose to believe for whatever reason are no reason for criticizing and do need to be held against the facts that are present. otherwise you'll end up with an even bigger shitshow that the F1 'fanbase' currently is.
I'm all for calling teams on their faults etc. but not when it's just rumors/made up stories which half the time are just posted for the clicks (aka money) without proper research and/or facts.

Honda revolted to HRC as a screen from RBR rivals especially the silver arrows
One point Ferrari raised recently was the fact that for 2026 new rule change, RB is sat at the table with the other engine manufacturers (Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault and Honda) when they have been using Honda engines and will use some of their IP for their engine. But still they are at the negotiating table as a new engine manufacturer, which basically gives them two votes in five when it comes to rule changes for 2026.
If they all sit at the table, they can do something about that if they don't like it I think?

@@josephf467 Yes, I do, and so does Red Bull. They wanted to bring the engine freeze forward, so they wouldn't have to dedicate any capacity to maintaining it and could instead dedicate all their resources to the new engine.
When Honda decided to leave RedBull was not competing for race wins most weekends. Then they won every available title and most of the races. The costs are pretty much constant, but the value increased DRAMATICALLY. How far ahead they planned is up for debate, but the cost/benefit analysis is pretty obvious.

Honda changing CEO could be the most interesting fact.
I'd Buy that Red Bull never really wanted to properly go it alone with RBPT. Instead maybe they wanted to sell Honda's IP to Audi or Porsche and let them take it over. This resulted in the deal falling through as Honda were none too happy for a direct competitor in VAG getting access to their IP. Makes sense. This meant that Honda didn't really have a choice except to come back into the field somewhat and actually maintain control of their own IP and benefit from winning the title and having increased advertising from that.
What makes more sense is Marko didn't like Honda leaving. Threatened to sell off the IP, went a long way into the Audi deal before backing out as a bluff and eventually got Honda back involved. Just feels like the kind of thing that would have happened in that field.
Everybody built extreme engines with less regard for reliability. They knew the freeze was coming and adapted.
Honda is clear winner here, keep names on cars while spend significantly less and get real RB needs a engine partner in 2026 RBPT is not gonna make it.
It's pretty obvious to me, Honda is making the best of it while RB is just trying to gain the leverage negotiating with new partners.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that in creating RBPT they poached some very skilled talent from other teams which regardless of the direction Honda and RBPT goes will obviously have an effect on the teams those people left.
Even if they didn't poached head engineers from other teams. They still gonna knock the door and asking for a job. That turbo alone, is masterpiece of engineering from HondaJet. Even IHI engineers are in awe when they was sent the blueprint to manufacture it.
They lost some engineers too. Look at the Aston Martin aka green red bull. The aero engineers are red bull. I don't buy your story. Engineers move around a lot in F1. With the cost cap teams are forced to pay less.

How is it that Honda never left the sport as they said they would?? If they are to continue as things are now they should be forced out with NO team contact for at least 3 years before being let back in. And RB should have to prove they are building their power units from the ground up without outside help for at least 3 years before they are allowed to make a change. They seem to have misinformed the FIA when pushing for an engine freeze (which they got) and now wants to get the benefit of new manufacturer rules when it looks like they have been in collaboration the entire time. Well this hypothesis hasn't dated well now that RBR has picked up Ford as an engine partner.
I think Porsche-Red Bull partnership was about to be agreed upon by RB and Volkswagen Group but Honda is there to support RB all the way and their partnership is legendary.
the rumours I have seen around the RB/Porsche deal was that Red Bull thought it was 50% of the PU manufacturing where as porsche wanted 50% of the full Red Bull Racing company so it was a 50/50 partnership but Red Bull decided against it because they were looking to bring Andreas Seidl in as TP replacing Horner and Horner basically told Dietrich Mateschitz to kill the deal. How much of that is the truth, I dont know but seen a lot of places (some quite credible) reporting that when it was announced the deal was dead

Not only F1 would never race in space, The crew they trained during those costly stunts is pit crew, which in their best form at 3 times 1 second faster pitstop on 45 laps race would only give 0.06 advantages per lap.. if the laps are more than 45 laps the advantages would be thinner and also if they did less than 3 pit stop the advantages would be thinner
As a car manufacturers it would be a ridiculous waste of money, And they can say "Look at Mercedes, they didn't waste that much amount of money for pit crew"

Well Alpine-Renault need an new customer team instead return as Andretti Team in next year, 2024.
Honda F1 (that wants to stay in the sport) and the parent company Honda Japan, have completely different mindsets. Honda F1 also didn't want to leave Red Bull in the shit, because they helped them save face as the McLaren mess. Since the FIA/F1 changed the PU regulations for 2026, and Honda Japan changed CEO, and VW entering, it's a different set of circumstances. It's the difference between what the CEO says publicly (for media and shareholders) and what the company actually do.
We can all look at Red Bull. But Honda would look REALLY bad if they're caught gaming the system.
What RedBull-Honda did was find the loophole in the system. That's it.
Finding loopholes in F1 is nothing new.

...gee, another controversy related to Red Bull in some way. Where have we heard this before? FIA aided Championship, Petty lead driver, cost cap breach, and now this? Red Bull needs to steer away from any more controversy, if they are not to be ridiculed. Red Bull wants to be a big boy team? Sure, but they need to clean up their act some.
And this whole Honda leaving, not really, but actually... I'm so over it. There should be a new rule implemented, if a Manufacturer says they're leaving the sport, all affiliating elements should leave, not just a few sticker changes and continued support. How can F1 continuously refuse new teams/Manufacturers from entering, while letting Honda go wishy-washy and leave/return every so years. Either stay, or leave.
Honda is a renown brand, and has a place in F1 for certain.... but they have to be 100% commited, if that's what prevents others from joining F1. If Honda can't make up their minds, F1 should honestly open up to allow other engine suppliers to take a crack at it, instead of a "We'll Join/Quit F1" in a cycle that Honda's been doing.
This is my honest opinion from a fan's perspective that's trying to follow everything. If this doesn't follow anyone else's opinion, that perfectly fine. I just wish Honda would stop it's games, and pick one.

Anyone who follows F1 knows who designed and built the beast of an engine that has powered Red Bull for their past two winning seasons. Honda didn't lose any brand benefit for their efforts. Also F1 engines have no cross over as to why average customers buy their car. Any F1 engine feature or concept is cheapened down for mass production by manufacturers who are not involved in F1 at all. Which is terrific for the average consumer. Good tech is good tech.
As for Honda being designated a new manufacturer for a 2026 entry if I heard that right, that is just silly. The FIA is all about intent in their rules and regulations so they adamantly claim. Even if Honda only did the electric side of the engine they are clearly not F1 novices.
Regardless the more engine manufacturers of ICE engines the better I contend. Because after all is said and done the ICE engine is the true heart of any ICE car, personal or F1.
Nothing 'goes down well with rivals' like Toto; always total bullshit to maintain their advantage or complaining until the rules get changed.
Honda should have pulled a Mugen. They already did that.
