I was visiting my grandaunt and gave my friend a lift so he can grab a few things from the store. There was a single stork nest on a lightpole in the village and while I was waiting for my friend I noticed the storks were being very active. I was watching them when I noticed the stork holding a chick by basically the sides of its head and just put it on the side of the nest, it crawled back, friend gets back and we were just watching the storks, trying to figure out what they are doing. We were less than 10 meters from the pole. The little chick crawls to the rest, gets picked up, put to the side. I think the stork got angry, because it was getting more and more aggressive with the chick, using my friend's words "It grabbed the little stork and swung it like a plastic bag", it put it down on the side of the nest. The only reason it was still on the nest was that it was stuck in the small branches. Stork grabs it and drops it on the side again. The chick gets stuck again, but this time it's essentially hanging upside down being held only by the branches that were probably sticking into it. Almost the whole time it had this raspy squeaking that has the same feeling as nails on a blackboard. It kept wiggling, trying to crawl back, but, it had no chance, it couldn't use its feet or wings, because it was stuck to the side by its back and one of the wings. It kept wiggling, then the sticks let go and it fell head first. Hit a car parked below then rolled into the rainwater ditch. A big thud followed by what I can describe as moving your hands through grass. We have birds around the house, so I often hear or even see chicks just thrown out, because they are a hindrance or because they didn't grow enough, we had 4 sparrow chicks just thrown out today, something came in and yeeted them out. Birds, or atleast sparrows seem very consistent with making sure their weak dies, I installed a net last June so it would catch the chicks thrown out. One gets thrown out, it was health,y barely smaller than the rest, it lands on the net ~1m below, I notice it and go out to grab it, but I figured I'd wait until the mother bird leaves... yeah, it dropped down onto the net, grabbed the chick and threw it off the net as well, the little thud pop sound as it hit the ground from 4m was awful.
You shouldn’t interfere with nature. Weak genes weaken the species. Inadequate resources spread to thin threaten the overall health of the population. The parent bird was doing what had to be done to ensure the survival of the species. It was being a good parent. You cannot judge other species by human standards. You should not interfere.
The way she watches without taking her eyes off as the chick is eaten is frightening. She also pecks as if she believes that the chick is still alive. She will probably calm down only when there are not even bones left.
This mom quickly kills & eats/regurgitates (two times, after the first feeding to the other chicks fails due to the carcass still being too intact), then ultimately succeeds in feeding this #6 chick to the others... the father gets rid of #5 later in a excruciatingly-slow process (was too big to eat by that time a few days later)... I believe #4 is given the 'ol heave-ho over the side eventually (after another initially-slow process), and then the father abandons the nest(injured? too much work? found another mate?), and the mother finally gives up and splits too - and humans have to come in and rescue the last two alive (#3 died of exposure the night before), one of which is raised by humans & actually re-introduced into a new nest as the biggest chick (called "BONUS") - and amazingly gets accepted there, and that whole brood reaches adulthood and flies off into the sunset!
To your dismay, she won't kill more of her offsprings now as all of the remaining broods are healthy and stable. But if there is shortage of food or one of the brood becomes unhealthy, she'll do this murder again.
2022 JUST GOT EVEN CRAZIER! PART 69,420. Firstly just this week in estonia a camera at a stork nest just witnessed a stork killing its own baby, digesting it, then spitting out for the other babies to eat. i didn't know we were witnessing a cannibal stork on 4k.
@@mastedman it was they day eve went against gods word. Food began hard to find, birth became a painful process. For that was the day that sin came unto the earth. Hence the shitty world we live in today.

OH MY GOD, she eats her own baby spits it out and they all start devouring their brother who was just cuddling with them! WHAT THE SHIT, how do they not realize what just happened to their cuddle buddy? Like, they are so stupid they don't realize one of their own is being killed by mama? Omg
They don't care about chick itself. There is no love but they care about perpetuate specie and that's what represent babies. That's why they take care of them.
It is not about empathy but about survival. The parent killed the weakest of all and it fed it to the others so that nothing is wasted. In the end, they have to take care of the ones with the highest probability to survive and become adults able to reproduce.
It is particularly their instinct, but part of it is genuine laziness. Storks often invade nests instead of building their own and will actively engage in infanticide so they do not have to hunt for more food. You see how the dumbass spent more time trying to kill its own baby, instead of actually hunting for food? This is the vase of maladaptive behavior. The usual excuse is “not enough food” - but that is ever hardly the actual reason.
Because they are weak and a waste to give food too. As you can see by the size of the one killed, it was too small and wasn't going to survive, either through not getting enough food, which is obvious here because it couldn't fight for the food that was given (hense Darwin's simple survival of the fittest).
We know that the stork's process of handling its little chicks still exists because it was suitable for survival. I don't think stork parents have a concept of survival fitness. Stork parents seem to confuse their little chicks for foreign objects.
I remember reading that wild animal moms will eat their deceased child so other animals don't desiccate its corpse but then her regurgitating the dead chick back up for its siblings to eat, jesus .... this was so brutal
Nature is metal asf. Not only did she kill her weakest, she also ate it, digested it, and fed it to the rest of it's siblings. Again metal asf.
GNAR
Metal af ? Cringe
Ain't no party like a Donner party, even in Stork-land. If the food grows low, the smallest must go.

For those who may not know in this course of nature the stork may feed other chicks the weakest one. (like if it can’t fly or is stable)
