He recently had surgery in this scene, everyone was doubting that he had that toughness in him anymore. Along with the panic attacks his reputation plummeted and this was his way of showing his crew not to F with him and that he still has it. A highly underrated scene?
not just that, you see him checking out everybody's biceps, making sure to pick the guy with the biggest muscles to prove a point. Don't. Fuck. With. The. King.

Tony was very insecure. Around a bunch of mobsters who've killed people, bulging muscles, the cigars and alcohol and the tattoos. He felt the need to show dominance.
Exactly he was very insecure deep down, you never see carmine or any of the old timers doing this stuff, if there's insubordination, someone just get clipped, but if money's rolling in otherwise, they really don't care what their guys do, with Tony, these guys can't even breathe wrong and he has to pull these primitive stunts to show dominance, hence why they all eventually get fed up and thought of usurping him one way or another except for sil

My favorite part was when Tony arrived at the place and then noticed a lotta small details about alotta guys and then wound himself up and then started a fight.
I don’t remember what episode this was but most everyone in the room was a made guy, except for the driver. Everyone telling not to do it was basically saying not to start something bigger by fighting back even though they T being a dick. T perceived the driver as the easiest target in the room. T got worked up over everyone not “holding up appearances” and took it out on the guy.
All wrong. He was judging the physical threat of each one and the driver was in the best shape and youngest so would have earned Tony more kudos in beating him. Rewatch the scene again.
He gets a pass because Tony is actually glad the driver was about to fight back, by doing so he allowed Tony to display his dominance better, it did him quite a favor.
3:24 Sylvio’s face. He’s the only one who really understood. In fact, you get glimpses of him in the background throughout the beating. He’s seems like the only one not as surprised. “Ok Ton. I get it”
Sil was the Don Zimmer of the Sopranos.A great right hand man.Highly observant brilliant guy who could size up any situation and give to Tony straight.Whether Tony liked it or not.At the end of the Sopranos run,you could see what the attempted assassination of Sil meant to the crew. And Gandolfini conveyed those feelings brilliantly with as few words as possible.
I do like how Tony actually reconsidered about beating up his driver at first. It’s clear as day that the guy is the most physically fit in the room, which was why Tony checks another guy before making his decision.
I think he was trying to see who he could target to get his point across that he was the toughest guy in the room, so he chose his driver because of his physique. The other guy had big arms, but was fat.
I always thought he didn't know who he was going to fight, but he needed to show he wasn't weak - my reading is that he's not sure he could take Bobby or Paulie, and Patsy or Chris aren't even on his radar as setting enough of an example. He settled on the driver because his muscles were showy, but he wasn't a hardened fighter like the others, so Tony could probably take him due to his experience and getting the first hit.
@@M-E_123 no he didn’t choose Bobby because he was tired, and he didn’t choose a made guy because it would cause problems. I think he thought he could beat anyone in the room, he just had to make a point.
It was more that they were kissing his ass too much. He was feeling pampered, it made him feel like everyone thought he was too weak to take care of himself. He had to remind everyone that not only is he still the boss, he's still the man too. It's like how Jerry Rice used to insist on earning his job each and every year at camp. He knew he didn't have to, but he wanted to remind everyone that he could do so easily. Tony Soprano didn't just need to be respected, he needed to be feared as well.

AntiClockwise Pineapple lolol tru but that waiter sorta counts too although maybe that was a mercy killing? Idk LOLOL it was chrissy that threw the brick anyway
I've always connected this scene to a conversation Tony has with Dr Malfi about Silverback gorillas from some wildlife show. Tony sympathises with the Alpha male, who he says has already beaten up enough subordinate gorillas "so now he just have to give them The Look". After getting shot Tony instinctively knew questions were being asked about if he was going to come back the same. This demonstration of brutality provided the answer.
This show never mad out Tony to be some great tv character mob boss, they showed what he really was. From this charismatic side, to his darkest side. Great character study.
+Adam 1 Tony was feeling inadequate. Earlier on he gets it in his head that his driver is banging his wife or at least that she finds him more attractive than Tony and then he starts scoping everybody out for a beating. He beat on the guy to feel like more of a man. Total dick move since the guy not only did nothing wrong, but was also very respectful of Tony the entire time.
No, he was saying don't do it to the driver. If the driver actively fought, attacked Tony, he would have been DEAD. He got mad but didn't strike him, so he was safe.
I agree on that aspect, but Paulie's whole character is based on the old school "loyal to the boss" mentality. So I think he was also saying it as a, "hey, don't raise your hands to him."
How is it psychotic? It's a leader asserting his dominance after a major setback so his followers dont think he is weak. He attacked the strongest person in the room to prove he still got it. We see this in various social settings and scenarios in everyday life.
That’s a huge theme of the show. Everyone focuses on the tough guy macho shit, but it shows that even the most prominent example of masculinity (Tony Soprano), can still be insecure and emotional.

Did Tony actually have to do this to prove he "still got it"? Was there going to be repercussions for not proving his physical prowess? Or was he really just being an insecure bully?
The latter. Tony is pathetically insecure. See also his fight with Bobby and how he obsesses over his "defeat" and tries to come up with excuses for it to save face.
I dont think it was the physical prowess he was trying to prove. In mafias you cant raise your hand at the boss otherwise you are basically dead. The fact nobody tried to stop tony was more what proved he was the boss. The fact he beat up a big dude is just a plus
bro its the Mafia. If you are perceived as weak you end up dead. In this situation, the guys follow you not just because you can threaten them, but because you threaten their enemies. They need to believe you can protect them, or they'll look to survive

@@MrFriendlyCsgoContent In real life, no, he'd be dead. You raise your hands to a boss, you'd die. Simple as that. This is like the most serious rule in the mafia. Guys have been killed just for pushing made men. Swinging at a boss? Never happen, and live to tell about it. Sopranos is a great show. But its not very realistic when it comes to the mafia. Plenty of ex-mobsters say that too, that a lot of the stories are so far-fetch, not how things real mobsters would do, or behave. No mob boss to begin with, would feel the need to beat up some underlining just to get respect. This is so far-fetch to how a mob boss would behave. If a mob boss felt his men were respecting him, or whoever disrespected him. Would end up dead, and that would get everyone to fall in line fast. Death is how you get these guys in line. Not beating up some associate. And the irony here is, this associate RAISED his hands to Tony, the boss. And lived. So Tony's entire point was to get his guys back in line, by beating him up. This kid raises his hands, then gets to live? LOL That would actually have the reverse effect. They'd think Tony is soft, and you can get away with whatever you want. Tony would be laughed at, in real life, and would gain no respect. Death is was keeps people in line in the mafia. This scene was completely fabricated on how any mob boss would ever act.

Now, NOT ONLY does everybody think he's a pussy AND a bully, he's now added mentally unstable loose cannon to his list of attributes. Well played, Tony.
At least he had the balls to lunge back at Tony knowing it directly put his life in danger. That makes him more respectable hence the others going to pick him up afterwards. I hope the made guys open the fridge for him from now on!
The series is always showing the constant peer pressure these guys put each other under. They've become so afraid of being seen as weak, they are willing to hurt people just to prove something to themselves. Like Chris shooting that kid in the foot or Richie's hard on for Beansie, even Gene smashed a bottle over his friend's skull because of a joke.
As a man, I get where tony coming from, but he failed to realize that the crew ALWAYS saw HIM as boss. That's why they offered him a chair and food and whatever he needed....his insecurities got the better that time...and his driver got the worst.
The problem is that they paid him scant mind. They acknowledged him, but in the same way you acknowledge a pal, and then went about their business. Tony correctly saw that their sense of his presence had diminished.

@@godfather4377 honestly I don't know if you are expert on gang members or what lmao.
But I don't care enough to read that big wall of text, hope you have a nice day.
Sometimes when you're king of the jungle, you beat your chest a little.
2:50 Paulie reaction says everything
Tony kicking his ass to prove to everybody that he's STILL tough, when EVERYBODY that he's trying to convince KNOWS that the guy is NOT going to hit him back because Tony's the boss... is NOT ONLY pointless, it's extremely counterproductive. Now, NOT ONLY does everybody think he's a pussy AND a bully, he's now added mentally unstable loose cannon to his list of attributes. Well played, Tony.
But he did try to hit him back.. what are you talking about?
@@Gameboy-Unboxings failed impulse try, all the mob guys shouting “DON’T DO IT!” shows how little sway that had to go down
@@Gameboy-Unboxings No he tried to grab him.
@@Obs23456 they were clearly used to saying that to people who were unaware of Tony’s physicality
@@Gameboy-Unboxings Congratulations. You said something stupid without using your observation skills beforehand and you got ratioed for it.
The real victim in all of this is my left ear.
lol I wish I saw this earlier
At least he had the balls to lunge back at Tony knowing it directly put his life in danger. That makes him more respectable hence the others going to pick him up afterwards. I hope the made guys open the fridge for him from now on!
He had serious anger issues. His mother told him to count to ten but he forgets
@@me6271 And Tony doesn't? That's fucking *rich.* Nearly hysterical, actually.
@@SpaceEmperorGenos Just saying that the muscle guy didn't make a rational decision to swing at Tony. He just got mad and put his life in danger
Tony's Insecurities were firing at an all time high, Junior was right about him, he never had the makings !
"Insecurities" lol. U realize its not like he gets voted out and retires peacefully in Florida....he gets killed.
It's not just that. They barely acknowledge him.

Indeed, and the driver sat down before Tony. Not the best move.
